The temple kitchen had burnt down a few months before. Despite the inauspiciousness of the event, devotees had taken it as an opportunity to build a better kitchen in its stead. Since the new kitchen had not been completed, and its temporary replacement was very small, all of Srila Prabhupada's prasadam was being prepared in the kitchen on Sabhapati's travelling bus parked in the temple car park.
Prabhupada's servant Hari-sauri saw to the serving of his breakfast and lunch. Thus it was a common sight to regularly see Hari-sauri running to and fro from the bus to "Prabhupada House" during Prabhupada's one-week stay in Melbourne.
The cold weather had stimulated Prabhupada's appetite. After returning to his quarters, Prabhupada took breakfast. Hari-sauri had prepared soaked, mashed deep-fried dal-paste patties -- badas -- and chidwa, spiced, fried flat-rice with peas and potatoes. In addition to this, Prabhupada was offered sandesa, peeled grapes, a selection of citrus fruits, fried salted cashews and macadamias, all served on a round silver platter.
