Book distribution

Ganesa had just returned from a full day on the street selling books. Receiving permission from Srutakirti to briefly see Prabhupada, Ganesa, still dressed in his street clothes, knocked on the door, entered Prabhupada's room and found him alone sitting upright on his chaise longue. Ganesa offered his full dandavats on the floor in front of him. As he rose to sit down, Prabhupada said, "Oh, you are not in the kirtana?"

"No, Srila Prabhupada," replied Ganesa. "I've been out distributing your books." Prabhupada appeared very pleased and began to question Ganesa as to what books he was selling and how sales were going generally. Ganesa explained that he was finding great success in selling Caitanya-caritamrta, Krsna book and Bhagavad-gita. Prabhupada asked if any one book was selling better than any other.

"No," replied Ganesa, "all your books are selling well. It's just a matter of the desire of the distributor as to which books he personally prefers to sell."

Prabhupada beamed with pleasure. Ganesa offered Srila Prabhupada a letter from himself and one from his wife, Subhalaksmi, both accompanied by monetary donations. Then he offered his obeisances and left the room.

Ganesa: It struck me how the special nature of Prabhupada's Krsna consciousness was that all his activities were aimed at distributing it to others. Thus he produced his books to provide his followers and those others fortunate to receive the books from his disciples with sufficient transcendental reading matter. It was obvious that Prabhupada was convinced that whoever read those books would become perfect. I recalled how Prabhupada had once said how his books would provide the foundation of civilisation for ten thousand years to come, and how he had said one other time that the purports to his books were his "devotional ecstasies". I felt encouraged to go on selling Prabhupada's books, more and more.
