On Speaking Strongly in Srila Prabhupada's Service

Our so-called religion is unique in the world, simply because we stand solidly on philosophy, and because we are strong in that way, no one can refute or defeat us, so we are wiping out sentimental religion wherever we penetrate and it appears the people everywhere are accepting us more and more. Prabhupada was fearless. Once a professor came to meet him. Srila Prabhupada inquired, ''What do you teach?'' ''Hinduism,'' the man said. ''What do you mean by Hinduism?'' The professor, thinking to give a clever reply, said, ''I don't know.'' Srila Prabhupada retorted, ''Then you are a cheater! For you are purporting to teach that which you do not know.'' The professor became livid with anger. A shouting match began, and the professor had to be removed. (c.f. Srila Prabhupada Lilamrta Vol. 6 Ch. 2)

Sometimes on the beach in Bombay Dr. Patel would get angry at Srila Prabhupada for his unceasing denunciation of everything bogus. Srila Prabhupada would shout back, ''I am not saying it, Krsna is!''

Dr. Patel: You are so very hard and harsh.

Prabhupada: I must be hard! The whole world is spoiled by these Mayavadis. Therefore I am very hard. We must be harder and harder. I don't make any compromise with these rascals. Even if I don't get any disciples, I'll be satisfied.

Dr. Patel: With all due respect, sir, we must have some sort of forbearance for others' views.

Prabhupada: No, no. Because if we have got to preach, we cannot make any compromise.

Dr. Patel: You feel that way, we have no objection. But we should also respect somebody else's views.

Prabhupada: No, we have got all respect, but not unnecessary respect.

Dr. Patel: But even unnecessary respect sometimes you unnecessarily go beyond, according to the...

Prabhupada: No, no, we have respect. But a thief should be called a thief. That is truth.

Dr. Patel: You are the magistrate and you are the judge and you are the...

Prabhupada: No, no, I am not the judge. I am talking on the basis of Bhagavad-gita. Na mam duskrtino mudhah prapadyante naradhamah: "One who is a naradhamah, he does not surrender to Krsna." This is the judgment. As soon as we see that one is not surrendered to Krsna, we accept him as a naradhamah. That's all. Whatever he may be.
