Sankirtan bus

After Ratha-yatra, the double-decker bus, headed by Madhudvisa Swami, set off for a grand sankirtana tour of New South Wales and tropical Queensland, reaching towns along the way that had never seen a devotee, let alone a busload of them.

Madhudvisa: Apart from the unusual colour scheme, the travelling bus looked much like a regular bus -- so much so that occasionally people would get on board. If they could handle the association, and were going in our direction, then they'd get a free ride.

Many country towns were taken by surprise. Devotees chanted, distributed thousands of Back to Godhead magazines and sometimes prasadam. After celebrating Janmastami and Vyasa-puja in early September 1972, in the rainforests of Millaa Millaa, the bus returned through Townsville, Rockhampton, Brisbane and back to Sydney for Radhastami, a blissful festival that included carrying the Deities of Radha Gopinatha on parikrama procession all around Glebe.

The sankirtana trip had been an undoubted success. Brisbane had again been particularly receptive, so it was decided that a new temple would be opened there as soon as possible.
