With a heavy heart, I want to share that Devananda, affectionately known as “Pita,” passed away in the early morning hours of Sept 22, 2025. He leaves behind his beloved sons, Dwarka Van Pelt, Dhanan Van Pelt, and Chris Van Pelt. He has 5 beautiful grandchildren, Advaita, Anuradha, Gaura Lila, Sita, and Bhima.
Six months ago, he began the process of leaving this material world. Dwarka and his dearest sister, Linda Van Pelt, selflessly cared for him day and night. Due to a weakened state from cancer and treatment, he was bedridden and fasted purely on the milk of our sweetest cow Aruni.
In the final phase of his life, many blessings came his way – ones that indicated a life lived in service and devotion.
I’ll share a few of these beautiful experiences. Shortly after entering hospice in early May, Sridhar Swami was visiting our neighbors when he saw Dwarka in our yard. He had him join them for lunch prasadam. At the end of the meal, Dwarka asked if he would come next door to visit his dad and give his blessing. Maharaj agreed and went to Pita. He said mantras and blessed him. Later that day, we were told that he was sent there by Srimati Radharani.
That same month, Pita’s dear friend, Radhanath Swami, was visiting Alachua. He reached out to Pita and blessed him.
