Prabhupada’s Daughters Speak Out on VDG

An Open Letter to The Present
And Future ISKCON Devotees
January 14th, 2023

Dear Esteemed Vaishnavas and Vaishnavis,

Our most respectful obeisances to you all. All glories to our beloved Founder-Acharya, Srila Prabhupada.

We are a group of women disciples of Srila Prabhupada who has been sincerely serving his ISKCON for fifty-some years.

We’ve been on the front lines of preaching; we’ve helped build and maintain temples; we’ve translated, produced, and distributed BBT books, and brought many of our current leaders to Srila Prabhupada’s movement. We’ve also raised families, helped grow communities, and practiced Krsna consciousness with dedication and faith.

What’s more, as the first generation of Srila Prabhupada’s Vaishnavi followers, there is one thing we all share: the experience of how His Divine Grace cared for us and empowered us to serve to our fullest capacity in Lord Chaitanya’s movement. Yet today we share a grave concern.

Recent events have shown us that, under threat from one part of our Society, some are willing to sacrifice the integrity and dynamism of Prabhupada’s worldwide movement by disempowering its women devotees.

At a 70 year old blooped devote initiated by HDG I can only say that in my couple of years living in the Buffalo Temple and visiting or helping is several temples in the early 1970s the women devotes were in many ways better examples of the Prabhupada way than some of the Male devotes. They certainly even then were not equally appreciated as Prabupada intended with his beloved daughters. For the senior Women to have perservered for over 50 years exemplifies their dedication. They should not be held back by misguided politics. It makes me sad to see the power play by some in authority.

We have to stop letting Iskcon be ruled by the most backward, misogynistic, bodily conscious elements of our society. The "one part of our society" mentioned in the letter is the ICC and they are dedicated to regression, keeping power at all costs, suppressing the voices of women and keeping child abusers sitting on the vyasasana. It would be nice if the GBC did not allow themselves to be bullied by this faction who wield money, temples, and followers as a weapon to allow them to get what they want.
