January 3, 1975Share : Satsvarupa Dasa GoswamiPrabhupada lecture notesYesterday I heard Prabhupada give a lecture on Srimad-Bhagavatam 3.26.26 on January 3, 1975, in Mumbai. The false ego in the material world is divided into three according to the modes of material nature. Persons in the mode of goodness see this material world as it is. Those in the modes of passion are making plans without any aim of life. Those in the modes of ignorance are like animals. This ahankara makes one think he belongs to a particular body. Under the influence of the gunas, they falsely think, “I am the doer, and the effects are due to my labor.” This is illusion, moha. It is like a person with a fever thinking crazily. Our job is to get out of this moha. We can get out of it by controlling the senses, but it is very difficult. The easiest way is worship of Vasudeva. This false ego is creating deep-rooted hopes, and we have to pluck out this root of karma.Karma comes in the seed form, then sprouts, unmanifested, then manifested. It’s like a disease that comes first unmanifested, and then manifests. Bhaja vasudevam is the way to uproot them. The devotees can very easily uproot the causes of misery in this life. They are always attached to the lotus feet of the Lord. They do not even try at once to see His face. That is their enjoyment. That is transcendental bliss, vilasa. They have ecstasy. When one is completely a pure devotee, these bodily symptoms are visible. And then the root cause of karma is vanquished. They are no longer interested in fruitive activities. The yogis go to a secluded place and control the senss. The jnanis study philosophy. But the devotees are attracted to the lotus feet of the Lord. They forget all material activities without separate endeavor. Vasudeva is the ultimate shelter. One cannot understand the cause of a devotee being so renounced. In India, they are surprised how young Westerners have become so renounced. The Indian disease is to think that these are old things. Familiarity has bred contempt. But this is the only way out of entanglement. They shall always remain entangled. They have no information of the spiritual world. They are trying to adjust in this material world to become happy. Leaders in India are saying, “Throw away the sastras and take to industry,” but they don’t know the aim of life. We are parts and parcels of Krishna. We are separated by a diseased condition, and we cannot properly serve the whole, the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
