Please lose your footwear!

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada. It is Ratha Yatra time in Chennai on January 13th and I invite all devotees to come to Chennai for the Yatra.Next Sunday is the Snana-Yatra and I remember the experience I had in January 2009 and I wish to share it with all devotees for their pleasure. That Sunday, my wife and I made a rare visit to the temple together. There was a lot of rush. We had to park our car some distance away from the temple. As we walked to the temple, my wife had half a mind to leave her chappals in the car. She had lost her chappals recently in a function. But she also didn’t want to walk barefoot to the temple. She finally decided to leave her chappals outside the temple. “It is not as costly as the earlier pair,” was her explanation. However I did not want to take any chances. I had a look at my wife’s chappals for the first time in my life and placed it within my sandals. So if anyone had any idea of stealing her chappals would be dissuaded by seeing her husband’s sandals. I also noticed the name of her sandals. It was ‘exotic’. I started getting worried.Halfway through the program, without my wife’s knowledge, I took only my wife’s chappals and kept it in the car. I was chuckling on the way. “She’ll think that she’s lost her chappals again.”But she was intelligent. “Did you keep it in the car?” she asked me. I felt a little foolish but I proudly said ‘Yes. See how much I care.”Then I went to get my sandals. But I couldn’t find them. All my devotee friends asked me “Prabhu what is the problem?”I told them I had lost my sandals. And suddenly all their bright faces started beaming and they literally jumped in joy!“Lord Jagannath has walked away with your sandals! He has taken your karma away! You are a fortunate soul!”I didn’t exactly jump with joy. But that was very comforting. But my wife didn’t appreciate the karma angle so much.So I went back home. And I was missing my sandals. I was a quite attached to them. But later I was OK and very happy. So my sincere request to all of you is not to leave your footwear in your car. Walk with them and leave them outside the temple. And if you don’t lose them the first time, it’s ok. Be patient. In fact it would be good idea if you visit the temple often. Then the chance of losing them is more. After all it took me more than 100 visits to the temple to lose them.Jai Jaganath!the temple to lose them. Jai Jagannath.

  • Hare Krishna prabhu, very nice to read your experience and devoted consciousness. through your incidence, the old story is coming to my mind heard from some Vaishnav's. Once upon a time, there was very saintly sadhu named tukkaram. His wife used to beat him with sugarcane sometimes, instead of complaining of this, Tukkaram ji praised her wife & said that "see the mercy of lord that the sugarcane with which you had hit me broken into two pieces. See how lord is compassionate to us, break it into two, one is for me & the other is for you." That is how saints see everything as the mercy of Supreme Personality of God head.
