Hare Krishna, Jay Shri Prabhupada..
I love Srila Prabhupada. I love his teachings and that's the main reason I'm so attracted to ISKCON. Since childhood my parents took me to the temple in Mumbai, every sunday. As a child I did not know who Shri Prabhupada was. For me ISKCON used to be a great looking temple, close to the beach. I then came to the UK and got this great opportunity to visit the London temple day before Janamastami. My experience was superb! I felt so great and welcomed, I got completely mesmerised in the Kirtans. Later I read a few books of Shri Prabhupada, researched videos and learnt more about Shri Prabhupada. Many times upon listening to him, I have craved for an opportunity to meet him in person. I really appreciate and I'm short of words to glorify Shri Prabhupada's contribution to society. I often refer to his preachings in my discussions with people.
Today, I have been blessed with a little baby. I really wish to send him to the Manor school and benefit from Shri Prabhupada's teachings, especially being in the UK. But I know it will happen only if God wishes it to happen.
This year, Im looking forward and hoping to visit the Bhaktivedanta Manor in Watford for Janmastami, with my husband and baby. But to be honest, as excited I am about going there, I'm equally nervous. Mainly because of the followers I meet at the temple. Each time I visit the temple I'm bombarded with questions. It does get very embarassing because not everytime you prefer answering to someone you dont know. I have been asked questions like, do you chant, how many time you chant, have you read the Geeta. Its more like a sales pitch, people are trying to sell either books or preach as if they are gurus themselves. I believe loving and praying a very personal. You naturally dont tend to show off what you do for the Lord. The one who shows is 'mithyachaari' - Fake devotee. Just like you dont go around telling people I gave a card or gift to my mother/father etc.
I don't think Shri Prabhupada ever went around asking questions, he simply chanted and people followed. He may have 'suggested' that people chant but not 'urged' them to chant in a manner in which some followers at ISKCON do. Recently my mother visited the UK from India. I took great pride in showing her the temple as I knew she will really enjoy the kirtans and seeing the temple and spirituality in UK. But unfortunately the same thing happened. A lady approached us and started enquiring. My mother wears a tulasi mala which is given by her Guru in India. After a bit of disucssion with the lady, she said the mala worn by my mother is not the right mala. It was really sad for me to see this happening again. She was invasive, impolite and not knowledgeable. On one hand I propogate about the temples and on the other hand I feel sorry to have met such devotees. What hurts me even more is when people I know, tell me about the perception they have for ISKCON. I being follower of Shri Prabhupada cannot here anything against something made by him, but now I have started to feel the same.
There are so many temples I have visited in India. But have always experienced complete independence. It is not so in ISKCON. If people have to progress spiritually they will by God's grace. The fact that people visit temple is a step toward progression. By constantly selling/urging to read books, chant, follow Krishna does not make it better. On the contrary it creates a repelling effect, like it is doing to me and my family.
If I were to advise someone to deal with such a situation I would ask that person to pay a deaf ear. I can and do the same, but how can I ask my family to. And how can I stop making them feel what they are made to feel by some devotees when they visit the ISKCON temple. I wish Shri Prabhupada was here, I would have told him this in person and I'm sure he would have had a solution to this problem, no one else can offer.

Hare Krishna Mr. Fisher,
Thank you for sharing the resource. I will be going through it all. Also, many thanks for sharing a little bit about yourself. I'm not a member of ISKCON either.
Kind regards,
Aarti
Jaya Prabhu!
Here are links to the Siksha program. There are other sites, but I do not keep a list.
There has been some variations in the levels.. according to country and tradition, but it is essentially consistent over the Globe, insomuch as I can see. The third link is to my personal journal on Beliefnet. On that site, I have written my original level qualifications. The GBC made titles for the different levels and named the congregational order.
It was great fun and a labor-of-love to have been a little part of ISKCON's back-story. But I am not in any authority or even 'in-the-loop' with the big devotees. I'm just another average devotee, trying his best to live a consistent devotional life.

Hare Krishna Mr. Fisher,
Thank you for your kind comment and advise. I appreciate the program initiated by you and wish to learn more about it. Please could more information be found about the Shiksha program?
Kind regards, Aarti
Hare Krishna Prabhus,
This subject is a major reason that the Siksha Program was created.
Inquiring minds want to know what level you are living your sadhana.
In 1986, there was a lot of this 'asking & picking' going on. New arrivals to the temple would leave and never come back sometimes, because they were interviewed & picked-at by devotees about their personal spiritual life. I began to research this and other phenomenon going on inter-personally and after six years of development, created the Siksha Program. The Sacred Order of Lord Caitanya, as it was originally named.
My answer is thus... a devotee asks "do you chant". "what do you eat", and stuff like that..
My answer is: "Prabhu, I have been a Sevaka devotee for 10 years." or such like that.
There is this program and others, which are designed to HALT criticism and picking among devotees and congregational devotees. I am surprised that with all the programs that ISKCON has going on to grow and protect the congregation, that this kind of 'picking' is still going on!
Hello mataji, thank you for your response. To your point that in ISKCON chanting is promoted and rightly so. However, I still believe 'promoting' something and 'fact finding' are separate things. We can promote by telling people to read books, chant, offer and have prasad etc but asking questions is fact finding and asking questions over and over again may reveal some other intention instead of mere promoting. I agree with you that I can simply respond saying I wish to keep it secret, when asked such a question. But the chanting related question is just an example that I have mentioned, there are many many questions being asked whenever we visit the temple. And my blog is only highlighting this experience. It makes you feel suffocated and unwelcome. Well not me to be honest, its my family members. So now I have started to feel guilty even to mention to them 'lets go to the Manor temple'. At this point one can only empathise wth the situation.
my humble obeisances dear Aarti Mataji,
yes, in ISKCON to chant particular number of rounds is the most essential thing. And Devotees ask it not because they want to judge or something like that but because they want others to be happy by chanting this Mantra Hare Krishna.
It is ok if You do not chant regularly, really it is ok, so You can tell like that. That is simplicity isn't it?!
Simplicity and sincerity. When we say things as they are to right people then they won't chastise us but try their best to help us.
Of course please do not tell Your heart to anyone and everyone, You are correct here. Even among Devotees we have to know to whom to tell and to whom not to tell.
I am trying to chant some amount of numbers but the thing is not in quantity but in quantity. So Your one sincere round might be more powerful than my 24 rounds, isn't it?! So quality is first.
And if You do not like Devotees asking You this question then if i were You i would say that i wish to keep it in secret and again do not take it so seriously.
...
And as we know Lord Nityananda and Haridas Thakur used to go out to each home and beg people to chant the Holy Names. So do Lord's Devotees:
Dear Maral Mataji, in your profile I have read that you chant 24 rounds of Maha Mantra a day. That is simply amazing and I have no words. But out of curiosity I would like to know why is there such a question on this portal. Does the number of round of chanting differentiate between devotee. Is that the reason why people ask and then people respond. I think those who respond with I do this that and the other have not been given a lesson on pride by their Gurus. Kind regards, Aarti
Hare Krishna! Thnk you for your commnt. I agree with you we must not judge and your point that Im judging is not true. I urge that you read my blog again to understand the deeper meaning. There are certain observations I have made while visiting the temples of ISKCON which I shared in the blog. These observations are not noted anywhere else in any other hindu temples in my experience and also by any of my friends or family. Even then I am not percieving ISKCON, rather I continue to visit for my love for the environtment. The poeple associated with me, my family perceive it negatively and tell me things about ISKCON which hurts me - and this is what I have shared. Regarding your second comment about giving an answer to someone for chanting. Why do you assume that people chant. My husband does not chant, I dont chant regularly, my mother has her own mantra given by her guru, dont you think it is embarassng to be faced with such a question in public. And then if he replies no I dont chant, or I have some other mantra, the person asking the question is the one who is judging and will respond as though he/she is guru. My blog states my view tat what we do for our lord is our own love for him, whether we chant, offer prayer, go to the temple, fast etc is not anyone elses business and therefore is not a question to be asked. Moreover, I also believe that only those who have pride speak about what they do. for instance - I chant 24 rounds a day etc. You have mentioned in your reply it is simple and to take it easy. But it is not easy is it? To be faced with comments and questions about how we personally follow religion.I do hope that my response can clarify the perspective in which the blog has been written. I would suggest that you re-read my blog so that you do not judge it negatively. It is imp that we all practise what we preach and before preaching understand the real matter.
it is true our prayers better we keep in secret. It is nice.
But at the same time what is the difficulty to reply: "yes, Mataji i chant 4 rounds, or 8 or 16 or 24"
So i do not see any difficulty :) it is so simple, isn't it?!
Please take it easy!
Your servant,
Hare Krishna dear Mataji, please accept my humble obeisances! All glories to Srila Prabhupada!
It is very nice to hear that You are happy reading Srila Prabhupada's books.
You are right he is our savior.
...
In this world we meet people who are mirrors. Because of that life is difficult not every time as smooth as we wanted it to be.
Every time there is battle.
We meet people whom we do not like and separated from those whom we like. So why?
Because we get what we deserve and what we need.
Usually we are among people and seeing their qualities we have to learn ourselves.
If we dislike one particular quality of a person that means that quality we having ourselves. So it is a signal from Paramatma which says: SEE, NOW YOU HAVE TO REMOVE THIS BAD QUALITY.
So again: if we see a person and if we see some particular bad quality in him and disturbs our mind that means we are having the same bad quality and wise one will try not to judge other person but improve himself.
By judging others we won't be happy. Because there are crores of living entities even unlimited...and each of them are having bad and good qualities. So we won't have enough years to correct them and judge them.
But if we perfect ourselves then we will be happy.
...
So in this way in ISKCON also there will be new Devotees, kanishtha adhikaris, neophyte Devotees, madhyama adhikaris....so we can not judge.
If You meet neophyte Devotee it does not mean that all in ISKCON are so, isn't it?!
So when we become qualified then Krishna will allow us to associate with madhyama adhikaris, more intelligent Devotees.
Your servant,
