Nirjala Ekadashi

EKADASI or Ekadashi - Eleventh day of the Hindu Lunar Month. In every fortnight, there comes an Ekadashi. Jyeshta Shukla Ekadashi, which is called Nirjala or Bhimsaini Ekadashi is more auspicious and fruitful for good health, longevity, social comfort and salvation. Nirjala = Nir + Jala means Fasting without Water. Lord Vishnu is worshipped on this day. A metal utensil or Earthen pot filled with water covered by a white cloth and fruits are donated to a vedic scholar. Nirjala Ekadasi Story: Once Rishi Ved Vyas a well-wisher of Pandavas described the drawbacks of having food on Ekadasi. This laid stress on Ekadashi fast every fortnight. Bhima, who used to eat a lot and could not remain without food because of Vrik Agni - Hunger Fire in his stomach, requested Saint Ved Vyas to tell him single fast, the fruit of which could equal to that of 24 Ekadashi fasts. So, Ved Vyas explained the importance of Jyeshta Shukla Ekadasi and asked him to observe a fast on this day. Nirjala Ekadasi is observed on May 31st, 2012 - Thursday. Next day parana timings : 13:44:56 to 16:24:59 Alternate Nirjala Ekadashi = 01/06/2012 - Friday. Dwadasi tithi would be over before Sunrise. ** Nirjala Ekadasi is observed on May 31st 2012 and June 1st 2012 . Since Ekadasi tithi is prevailing on both the days but for a short duration on June 1st.
