Mindful Music by Bhaktimarga Swami

Imagine meeting someone who was exposed to nothing but classical music while growing up. That was the rule of the house. Pop or anything contemporary in the way of music was the standard taboo. I had to think that perhaps such a person could be the luckiest in the world. Creative, innovational sound vibration gave backbone and shaped a music teacher out of the person. Well, that friend I made has become fascinated by mantra music.

“What is life without rhythm!” I commented. Music, with its arrangement of sounds and silences, can be the life breath of a person. I see rhythm in walking with the sound of feet on the soil or the trickle of a small waterfall. It makes life all worth it and especially if one can connect it all to the great musical arranger, Bhagavan.

The other day when a number of us went to Global TV studio, there is this large image of Jazz Great, Miles Davis on the wall. That visual of Mr. Miles brought me back to my teens when I was exploring the world of beautiful sound. Perhaps his spontaneous style led me somewhat to classical Indian music, ragas and so on, culminating with mantras. Now that’s practically all I hear.

It was a pleasure to meet a local Haligonian, (that is from Halifax) who appreciates mantric power. Maybe Miles Davis, somewhere in his career caught some chanting with his ear during his life-time. The Krishna chanting was just starting to surge in the 60’s.

Meanwhile, in the evening I’ve been working with Rohan on the background music for the play. There’s a lot of detail in that service. He is busy.
