Mayapur Community Hospital has taken a significant step toward establishing full maternal and neonatal care services, acquiring a baby warmer, a phototherapy machine, and a cardiotocography (CTG) machine in the months following its first cesarean section. The additions address critical gaps in newborn and labor monitoring, positioning the hospital to offer a level of maternal care previously unavailable in the Mayapur area.
Background
Dr. Juhi Dhanawat (MBBS, MS (Obs & Gynae), DNB (Obs & Gynae)), a practicing devotee and gynecologist based in Kolkata, has led the effort to build out these services since joining the hospital roughly a year and a half ago, visiting once a week to care for patients.
She holds a Fellowship in Minimal Invasive Surgery (Laparoscopy/Robotics) from Germany, a Master’s in Neuropelvicology from the International School of Neuropelvicology (ISON) in Switzerland, and an Endometriosis Fellowship from Bordeaux, France. Her work at the hospital reflects a broader, ongoing push to move from providing basic outpatient care toward becoming a facility capable of managing pregnancy and childbirth from start to finish, without requiring families to travel elsewhere during medically sensitive moments.
When she began working with the hospital, the staff had already identified a clear priority: enabling on-site deliveries. The objective carried added significance given Mayapur’s status as the birthplace of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, a place devotees regard as spiritually distinct from any ordinary hospital catchment area. “People travel to the Dham from far and wide, and many come precisely so that their child may take birth on this sacred soil,” Dr. Dhanawat said.
Dr. Dhanawat said a properly equipped operation theatre was a prerequisite for safe deliveries, since obstetric complications can escalate quickly and require immediate intervention, leaving little room for delay or improvisation once labor begins. Dr. Prasenjit Modak led the establishment of the hospital’s operating theatre, which now includes a functioning endoscopy and laparoscopy unit.
