Kartik Snan | Kartik Snan 2012 | Significance of Kartik Month

With the beginning of the Kartik month, a tradition of Kartik Snan also begins every year. Men and Women go for holy baths during this period. Kartik Purnima is considered to be very important during Kartik month. It is believed that Lord Vishnu also incarnated as Matsya on the day of Kartik Purnima. Taking a bath in river Ganga and donating lamps is considered to be very sacred in this day. A person can also donate as per his wishes.

Donations and charities are considered to be extremely important on this day. This day was called Mahapuneet Parv by Trideva. This day is also known as Tripuri Purnima. If Moon is in Kritika Nakshatra and Sun is in Vishakha Nakshatra on the day of Kartik Purnima, Paghya Yog is formed.

Kartik Purnima Worship

A person should take bath early in the morning. He should fast and worship Lord Vishnu. A bath is the river Ganga is also considered to be sacred on this day. People who are unable to take a bath in river Ganga, often visit any water body in their vicinity. Lamps are lit in the evening near temples, crossroads, lanes, pipal trees, tulsi plants etc. A lantern is tied on bamboo sticks and is pointed towards the sky. Mostly women keep this fast.

A person keeping a fast on this day should feed a Brahman. A havan should also be performed. Lamps should be lit in the evening. Donations should also be made to various Brahmanas. At night, the six different Kritikas should be worshipped which are Shiva, Preeti, Sambhuti, Anusuya, Kshama and Santati. A buffalo should be donated on this day after the worship. Doing this opens the doors of Shivalok for a person. People who take baths in a holy river on this day are considered to be very fortunate.

Lapsi - Tapsi Story

According to a legend, two people lived in a place. One was called Lapsi and the other was called Tapsi. Tapsi was always devoted and dedicated towards God. Lapsi used to regularly offer Lassi to God. Once, both of them started arguing about who was more devoted and dedicated. Narad Muni arrived at the scene and asked them why they were arguing. Narad Muni offered them his help after listening to the matter.

Next day, Tapsi was going back to his home after taking a bath. Narad Muni dropped a ring worth 1.25 crore in front of him. Tapsi hid the ring beneath his feet and sat there to offer his prayers. Lapsi woke up, took a bath and offered Lassi to God as usual. Narad Muni arrived at that instance. Both Lapsi and Tapsi asked him whi was more devoted. Narad Muni replied by saying that Tapsi had stolen the ring and that’s why his worship was not worth it. Hence, Narad Muni said that Lapsi was more devoted to God.

Tapsi asked Narad Muni that how he would receive the results and benefits of his devotion. Narad Muni replied by saying that he would get results from the people who will take baths during the Kartik month. Narad Muni also said that anyone who would not tell this story or listen to it during the Kartik month will not receive any benefits.
