Balaram, the Personality of Godhead appears each time Bhagavan Sri Krishna takes birth....He loves Krishna so much that he becomes Krishna's paraphernalias, Krishna's abode,Krishna's servant, Krishna's best friend, Krishna's protective elder brother and so on.... But Balaram, is not as soft as Krishna...This can be seen in many pastimes.
Even in Ramayan, when Rakshashi Suparnakha became infatuated with lust upon seing Lord Ram,she approached him and spoke sweet words to him.Lord Ram although avoiding her and rejecting her, still spoke courteously to her.But Lakshman, (an incarnation of Balaram), no words only action! He cut of her nose send her bleeding and mourning..!
In Krishna lila, we can see that Krishna usually plays around with the demons and gives them ample of chance to challenge him and show him their prowess but Balaram, not so playful...For example, just one tight slap and Pralambhasura was dead!No chance for showing circus!
Even in the pastimes of Lord Jagannath, especially in Rajapur, everyone fears Baladev....Even if a single brick is taken out of the temple area, thats it.....He makes sure that the person regret for his whole life..There are so many stories that we know about offenders getting whacked by Baladev... He is really a BIG BROTHER!!!
But.......
In Kali Yuga, when Balaram appeared as Prabhu Nityananda, he was completely different....so merciful, so soft and so compassionate..
The same Balaram, who dragged Hastinapur with his plough to teach a lesson to the arrogant Kurus,who is the most wonderful club fighter, the terrible wrestler... was falling at the feet of inhabitants of Navadwip begging them to chant the holy names.....He pleaded everyone" Bhaja Gauranga, Kaho Gauranga, Laho Gauranga Nama re"
The same angry Balaram, who sent the demon Maya to the abode of death with his club, fell at the feet of the wretches Jagai and Madai to chant the holy names...even after being hit by them and bleeding profusely on his head. In fact, he pacified Mahaprabhu who was ready to kill them!
The same Balaram, who asked Jagannath to reject his wife Lashmi devi, because she went to the house a chandalini, cried in every streets of Navadwip, being overwhelmed by Love of Godhead, He gave Krishna Prem to everyone not bothering about their caste, religion and social status...
We can never see such as a merciful and compassionate Balaram elsewhere except in the beautiful form of Sri Nityananda Prabhu......May he shower his mercy upon us......Just remember his lotus feet while chanting the holy name and he will give us the highest spiritual pleasure in this very life...
