Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Mathajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to His Divine Grace Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.
This mail is in continuation of the series -"How to Attain Transcendental Love for Krishna ?", based on Bhagavad Gita class given by our beloved spiritual master HDG Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj on verse 4.10, in Penang, West Malaysia, on 16th March 1992.
In the previous postings we saw Gurudev explaining us the conditions which Krishna has given for us to attain transcendental love for Him. Maharaj explained that we should not mistake that these things are specific to only one particular ashram or varna.
In the previous postings we saw Gurudev explaining us the conditions which Krishna has given for us to attain transcendental love for Him. Maharaj explained that we should not mistake that these things are specific to only one particular ashram or varna.
Gurudev continued - "These ashrams and varnas, they dont matter at all. There is a very nice verse from Srimad Bhagavatam describing this (SB 5.1.17)
bhayam pramattasya vaneshv api syaad
yatah sa aaste saha-shat-sapatnah
jitendriyasyaatma-rater budhasya
grhaashramah kim nu karoty avadyam
Even if he goes from forest to forest, one who is not self-controlled must always fear material bondage because he is living with six co-wives — the mind and knowledge-acquiring senses. Even householder life, however, cannot harm a self-satisfied, learned man who has conquered his senses.
Beautiful verse for grhaashram - grahastha ashram. You are all grahasthas, married, working and maintaining your family and carrying on the show. This is a drama where we are in. Suppose we have to perform the role of Ravana in a drama. If we accept that the role, for that period we have to believe that we are Ravana and accordingly act. Because unless I believe and act like that, the drama will not be successful. So like the drama, we have accepted this ashrama - grahastha ashrama and we are already in it. So we have to carry on this path without worrying anything else. But side by side we have to remember this. There is a very nice story. There was one man who was very much afraid of grahastha ashram - bhayam pramathasya vaneshu abhisyaat. Because wife nags and everytime he has to struggle and earn money. Still she hates and so he was fed up of this life and he decided to go to the forest. He ran to the forest and sat in meditation. So people thought a new yogi has come and became attracted to him. You also can become a yogi - There are plenty of forests around (laughter). People came and asked him -"What can we do for you ?". He said - "Become my disciple." Because once you become a disciple, we can order -"Do this.. Do that etc". (laughter) So many people became his disciples. He was meditating and his disciples were coming to meet him daily.
There was one disciple who was worried about him. He inquired - "Maharaj is everything alright ". The guru replied - "Everything is alright - but there is only one trouble. The mice are eating my wheat flour and so I am not able to make chappatis.". The disciple replied - "Maharaj - don't worry. Tomorrow we will find remedy for this and give it as guru dakshana to you." So the next day they gave him a cat. Guru was surprised. The disciple said - "This is medicine for the rat. If you keep this cat, the mice
will run away." So guru was pleased that his flour is safe. The cat ate all the mice and after few days there were no more mice. The cat felt hungry and it began to cry. It wanted only milk. It was Indian cat and not Penang cat.(laughter) So guru had to go to some near by village, beg some Lakshmi and get some milk for the cat.
Next time the disciple came and asked - "Maharaj how is your flour?". The guru replied - "Our flour is alright. But I am wasting atleast 3 hours of my meditation time in running around the village in search of milk for the cat. So its trouble really." The disciple replied - "Don't worry Maharaj. Tomorrow we will bring you something to solve this." Guru was waiting as the cat was very troublesome animal. So the next day disciple brought a cow and said - "Maharaj you milk the cow and give it to the cat. Then the cat will catch the rat and make sure that flour is safe." Guru was very pleased. The cow dung has to be cleared and some grass has to brought to feed the cow. Guru did not think about it and later cow started mooing (laughter). Guru could not meditate at all. He had to beg for more money now as he had to get grass for the cow. The whole day was gone in bringing the grass for the cow, clearing the cow-dung, milking the cow and feeding the cat. And the disciple came and asked - "Maharaj how are you ?". The guru said - "I have no time to talk to you now. No time for meditation at all. Now my meditation is only on cow-dung." Disciple asked - "Maharaj what happened ?" . Guru replied - "What else to say ? I am busy."
Disciple said - "Maharaj - don't worry. Just get married so that wife can take care of whole thing and you can just meditate."(laughter) So guru had to marry again. The point is very nicely discussed in this verse. bhayam pramathasya vaneshu abhisyaat - Because of bhaya, because of fear, that man has ran away. But his senses were with him - uncontrolled senses. So in forest also he had one more samsaar. He left one samsaar and got another because senses are not under control. Frankly speaking, if your senses are under control with help of the shastras, jitendriyasya - jitha means win and indriya means senses. If your senses are under control -grhaashram kim nu karoti avadyam , then whats wrong in the house. There is nothing wrong in the house, because you are alright when your senses are completely under control. This is gist of whole discussion. So two points are clear now that this is not a sectarian knowledge and at the same time, grahastha ashram cannot harm you in self-realisation. Only thing needed is controlled senses and that could be done only with the help of scriptures, guru and devotional service. Hare Krishna."
Thank you very much.
