Translation by Srila Prabhupada - Srila Prabhupada ki Jai !
By the end of discourse everyone should know this verse by-heart, without looking into the book. So please be attentive.
Looking at picture of Radha-Londanishvara in the devotee's house Maharaj says, "It is not an accident you know - that you have Radha-Londonsihvara picture at home. He is here (laughs). They are beautiful deities in Central London. In Central London, there is Oxford street. There is a world-famous shopping center there. Near that we have a beautiful temple where in Radha-Londanishvara is situated. These deities have special signifcance, as they are the first Deities installed in ISKCON by Srila Prabhupada in Europe. Initially he had a small place taken for lease. That place was very small. But he wanted to build a nice Vedic temple there. So he got all the marble and wood and with the help of carpenter nice altar was setup. It was like a nice wooden cave (laughs). But there were no deities yet. The devotees asked Srila Prabhupada -"Everybody are saying deity, but there is no deity ?" Srila Prabhupada answered calmly - "They will come." Hardly two days were left. Devotees asked -" So Prabhupada, when are They coming ? Everything is ready ? Are you hearing what we are saying?" But Srila Prabhupada kept telling - "Yes. yes. They will come". And on the same day, some Indian called the temple and said -"I have got a Radha-Krishna Deity from India. But we are not using Them. So we would like to offer Them to you." Prabhupada immediately accepted as he was happy that some deities are coming. So immediately took a van and went with few devotees to that house. But that man was actually not ready for giving away the Deities(laughter) . But Prabhupada entered the house with the devotees like an army (laughs). He had told the devotees that you just follow my instructions. Don't talk anything else. He spoke to the Indian devotee. He saw the Deities. They are extra beautiful Deities and even now they do very nice worship. Prabhupada just asked one of the devotees to see how heavy They are. The devotee checked and said -"They are not so heavy.". Immediately Prabhupada said -"Alright take the Deities." The man got perplexed. He couldn't understand what is happening. He said, "We have to bring the Deities to the temple and then give to you.". Srila Prabhupada said, "No no. we can take the deities." By then devotees took the deities to the van and Srila Prabhupada was in the van and they left (laughter) before the man could do anything. But after driving for a while,Prabhupada stopped the van and then he prayed to the Deities and sang Brahma Samhita prayers in front of Them." He has said that these Deities are Radha and Krishna and they are extra beautiful. They are decorated very nicely, nice vastra and nice worship. You should go there some time to see Them."
So now lets continue with the translation - "Being freed from attachment, fear and anger, being fully absorbed in Me and taking refuge in Me, many, many persons in the past became purified by knowledge of Me — and thus they all attained transcendental love for Me." Now in order to undertstand these verses, we should understand one line at a time, especially the English transliteration. In the first line we have beautiful words. "veeta raaga bhaya krodha". Those of you who know Tamil language or any of the Indian language, will know - raaga means attachment, bhaya means fear, krodha means anger and veeta means without. This is the condition and thats why its very easy to remember these words. Four words only -"veeta raaga bhaya krodha". Raaga - We have raaga. We like this house and we are attached to it. This is how attachment develops. This is raag. This is how we should learn the words. (Gurudev tirelessly and enthusiastically encourages each and everyone (around 40 devotees) in the house to recite the first line of the shloka.) The secret of learning is that you should understand the meaning and somehow or the other connect with the familiar words. In this verse, Krishna says there is one condition, "that those who are without attachment, those who are without fear, those who are without anger - they can only attain Me." So somehow or the other, if you could get rid of fear, if you could get rid of anger, if you could get rid of attachment, then you are a candidate. Isnt it ? So if you want to be the candidate then you should fulfill this condition. If you fulfill this condition, He is smilingly welcoming you. If you don't fulfill the condition, then you will be sent out. Now in the second line, He gives the second condition. We don't want any conditions (laughter). But He gives. In the second line, 'man-mayaa maam upaashritaah' - mat-mayaa - 'fully in Me" , you should be engaged in Me, always in My devotional service. maam - unto Me. maam upaashritaah - taking My shelter. aashraymeans shelter. Now repeat the two lines -veeta-raaga- bhaya-krodhaa / man-mayaa maam upaashritaah. Is it very difficult ? No. Then comeone repeat without seeing (laughs). (Gurudev patiently encourages again every devotee to repeat the second line). If we take shelter of Krishna, He will never cheat us. If we take any other shelter, we will be cheated. I will cheat you and you will cheat me, but He will never cheat us. Because His name is "Trikaala-Jnaani". He knows the past, present and future.
Krishna willing, we will hear more nectar from Gurudev on this verse in the subsequent mails.
Thank you very much.
