Due to his delicate health condition, HH. Jayapataka Swami Maharaj was unable to make it to Kolkata Rathayatra as per his usual annual routine. However, Maharaj’s optimism and determination sprouted a mini-Rathayatra in the high-end township complex in Chennai, where he is currently staying. The residents of the apartment were so moved by Maharaj’s presence in their complex that they wanted to do something that would please him and that’s where the chariot festival made it’s way.
The unanimous efforts of the Chennai devotees pulled off an attractive little parade led by ecstatic kirtan and dancing; crowds of people forming parallel lines on either side of the Ratha to pull the ropes; Lord Jagannath, Lord Baladev and Lady Subhadra in all their majesty; and HH Jayapataka Maharaj following behind.
This spectacle drew forth eight hundred participants, most of whom were unaware of ISKCON and have never pulled a Ratha in their life, before. Not to mention the curious onlookers who paused their daily activities to catch a glimpse of the spectacle from their balconies. As always, sumptuous prasadam concluded the fascinating festival of chariots.
At the end of the day, Jagannath and His servants had attracted yet another multitude of hearts. Srila Prabhupada took Jagannath to the world and devotees follow his footsteps finding new ways to inspire thousands. ISKCON Chennai has hosted three Rath Yatras in Chennai this year.
