Hare Rama Hare Krishna to come alive on rock stage
CHANDIGARH: Madhava Sankirtan, a rock band of four ISKON members, would recreate the magic of '70s a la 'Hare Ram Hare Krishna' at the 22nd Lord Jagannath Yatra in the city on Saturday.
Aged between 22 and 25 and clad in 'dhoti' and 'kurta', the rockers will perform on a moving stage and sing devotional songs in praise of Lord Krishna. The performance will be staged on an open truck that will move along with the chariot procession starting from Panjab University and pass through sectors 15, 16, 17 and 22. The idea is to draw youth towards spiritualism using music as a medium.
'Madhava Sankirtan was formed early this year by a local group known as De Innovatives. Most of the members were already initiated into ISKCON. We decided to plan an all-time rock band that plays devotional songs,' said Nirdosh Sobti, founder of Madhava Sankirtan.
Nirdosh Sobti, founder of Madhava Sankirtan band has penned a special song for the event ' 'Yaro mere sang dekho is duniya ke ranghamey kabhi milega kinara chalo bolo mere sang... Hare Ram Hare Krishna'. 'We want youth to get untangled from rat race and attain spiritual bliss. The demands of career and success are so high, there is no time for introspection. Perhaps, music can draw them closer to the God,' Sobti said.
Though the city residents will miss the annual event--petal showers-the rock band will try to enthrall the audience with its music.
KK Bhasin, ISKCON member, who has been designing the rath for the last 14 years, said, 'The floral shower will not be possible this time. But we have bought some 500 kg of marigold flowers for decorating the rath.'
Route
Spiritual heads from the US and Coimbatore will deliver lectures. The rath is 50 feet in height with a multicoloured canopy. As many as 56 food items would be offered as 'prasad'
Yatra
It is held annually in Sri Jagannath Puri, Orissa. It signifies the journey of Lord Jagannath, Lord Baldev and Subhadhra from Kurukshetra back to Vrindavan in a charriot pulled by gopis. It is believed Radha and gopis had met Krishna after decades of separation in Kurukshetra. At that time Krishna was the crowned king but gopis knew him as a cowherd boy. So they wanted him to return to Vrindavan in grand style. As a mark of devotion, the y pulled his chariot all the way back to Vrindavan
