Nartaka Gopala dasi: “Our Godbrother Hansavatara Prabhu, initiated disciple of His Divine Grace AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, passed away on January 15 in Riviera Beach, Florida from throat cancer. His dear wife Yogamaya devi has asked me to compile this article. Here in Alachua, where they lived for the past year, Yogamaya devi arranged a beautiful fire yajna and loving ceremony last week at Tejo Prakash Prabhu and Laksmana devi’s property in his honor. At ISKCON Miami, Dharma Prabhu offered an artik in loving memory of his eternal soul. First off, the following few paragraphs were written by Yogamaya devi. Then we have a letter written by Hansavatar Prabhu himself last year after he was told by the doctor he only had months to live.”
Yogamaya devi Beckman: “I am British, so we were living in England and Hamsavatar did his Vedic Astrological Service and I taught yoga. We got married in July 1996 at the Bhaktivedanta Manor, a wonderful occasion and a beautiful ceremony. Many of Hamsa’s clients came to the wedding.
We moved back to the USA to New Mexico in 1998 and opened a Vedic Center called New Risikesh in Pecos, New Mexico. I taught Hatha Yoga and gave causes in Ayurvedic lifestyle. Hamsa gave Gita classes, and continued giving consultations on astrology and gem therapy. We had weekly Sunday Programs that were always well attended.
In 2009 the winters were getting so bad that we had four-foot drifts of snow and Hamsavatar wanted to be somewhere warmer and closer to other devotees. So we sold our beautiful New Mexico property and moved to Ocala Florida. We had rescued 3 horses whilst in New Mexico and once in Florida we rescued more. 2009 was a very bad for the markets (real estate tanked) and many horses had been left to starve, so we took some in. It was a wonderful time learning how these magnificent creatures can see into your heart, healing and loving even though they had been so badly abused, emotionally and physically by other humans.
I continued to teach yoga and Hamsa continued with his astrology practice. Around 2015 Hamsa got sick and we didn’t know what was wrong, finally he was diagnosed with Hep C. He got treatment and was completely cured, however, he could not work and we had to sell our Ocala property. We moved up to North Carolina and bought a farm and took all the horses with us. (We had we had 14 by this time!)
Unfortunately, just a few weeks after we arrived, I rolled my SUV and broke my neck. Things were never the same after this. I ran the farm, and it became difficult to continue. Still able to move and walk I became weak and it took a number of years to regain my strength. So, we decided to find homes for the younger horses. Paring down to 7 older horses life was much better. But, Krishna had other ideas and shortly afterward I was diagnosed with skin cancer!
We had to find homes for the others. But how? Who would want these broken-down elderly horses? We put it out into the FB world and 1,000 people answered our call for help.
During this whole time, Hamsa was my teacher, my nurse, my best friend and confident. He was always willing to help anyone, and animals loved him. We sold our farm in NC and moved to Alachua, not really understanding what would happen but having complete faith in Krishna. Hamsa had told me for years that he thought he would never see 70. I would laugh and say don’t be ridiculous. Well, he was an excellent astrologer and sure enough in August 2020 he was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. It was the weirdest thing, but I felt he was ready. The world really had nothing much to offer him, he wanted to be with his Guru, Srila Prabhupada, and the only thing stopping him was his love for me.
On Thursday January 14, 2021 he asked me, “Please let me go”. I said I would. On Friday January 15 he answered Srila Prabhupada’s call. Looking back, I see that it was Krishna that took all these attachments away, so we were able to take shelter of His Lotus Feet. The final attachment was my love, my Guru. He will remain in my heart always. I was honored to be his wife in this life. All Glories to Sriman Hamsavatar Das Prabhu.”
Hansavatar das Howard Beckman 11/18/2020 facebook: “I want to thank so many of you for your outpouring of love and I beg forgiveness from anyone that I may have offended in any way over this lifetime. I pray only for your mercy upon this fallen soul that I may be in the best possible consciousness when the moment of death comes. Actually “love” is the all-important thing we are seeking. Love for each other and ultimately love of God, Krishna, bhakti.
I never considered myself much of a devotee, so it must only be my faith in Srila Prabhupada, Krishna and the Vedic literatures that has carried me this far, as from the first time I met our glorious spiritual master in 1971 I had complete faith in him. I must admit that I rarely had much faith in myself, but never did I doubt Srila Prabhupada, or the message he brought to us from the spiritual world.
Thank you for allowing me to intrude upon your day with my thoughts and insights at this crucial time in my own life and I wish only good fortune and blessings for all of you. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and to all his glorious disciples. Hare Krishna!”
Rsi Kumar Dasa “I was fortunate to have a little association, to see him smile, He would always smile, he was always talking about Srila Prabhupada’s mercy. Such a great soul. Though we will miss him, he has achieved the greatest destination. Having served Srila Prabhupada, what is there to say except Vijay Bhavaha. My Dandavat pranam, All glories to his service. All glories to Srila Prabhupada!”
Seva Sonia Mariah Nascimento “Free now. May Mother Radha bless your arrival.”
Karuna Kaushik “May he reach Krishna’s abode.”
Patita Pavan das “Blessed Departure of a Godbrother Sriman Hamsavatara dasa Adhikary, a well-liked Godbrother, left his mortal frame just one day after the Sun turned North and headed into Uttarayana, the region of the Devatas. He left this world under the auspicious nakshatra Shatabhisha, a constellation of 100 faint stars. They are known as “the hundred stars of the lotus filament” and as the “star of the healing boatman, the one who takes you across.” At the time of his departure, the Sun was in the sunset position, 7th house with Surya-Budha-Guru-Shani Yoga, which aspect the lagna. There was a shubha-kartari or beneficial scissors combo with benefics Venus and waxing Moon cushioning either side of a great raja yoga. A further beautiful combination called Lagna-Adhi Yoga arises also. All these stellar hints point to one thing, Srila Prabhupada’s promise that his disciples will go back to Home back to Godhead, back to Krishna, due to the mercy of the Holy Names.”
