Incident at ISKCON Amravati Affirms Always Remembering Krishna

By Jayabhadra Devi Dasi, IGF Preacher, ISKCON Amravati

On June 18, an extraordinary incident took place at the ISKCON Amravati temple.

At about 10 am, a horse-like animal came running onto the property filled with fear as if it was searching for a temple. It turned out to be a cow—though not a normal cow, but one known colloquially as a nilagai, a large Indian antelope found only in jungles.

Those who saw her said she had also been seen briefly at the Hanuman temple close by before coming to our ISKCON temple. She could have gone into any house or hit someone in panic, as blood was oozing from several of her injuries, possibly having been struck by a vehicle on the road.

Upon entering our temple, however, she was calm and quiet, as though now having reached the goal to further her journey. She looked at Lordships Sri Sri Rukmini Dwarkadhish and then went for darshan of Srila Prabhupada. New people often need guidance to take darshan in the temple, but this divine soul behaved like she knew everything—maybe due to past-life memories.

She then moved out of the temple without harming anyone, departed the campus through the gate, and left her body—seemingly not wanting to contaminate the Lord’s courtyard.

Everyone was amazed by her behaviour. All the assembled devotees said she must have been a devotee in her last life and had come running to the Lord in the time of her death. They offered her a maha garland, performed sankirtan and circumambulated her, then sent her for the final rites.

She had arrived as if guided by the Supreme power:

Anta-kale ca mam eva, smaran muktva kalevaram,
yah prayati sa mad-bhavam, yati nasty atra samsayah
“And whoever, at the end of his life, quits his body remembering Me alone at once attains My nature. Of this there is no doubt.” (Bhagavad-gita 8.5)

To have darshan of the Lord while departing is the perfection of life. It seems this nilagai had memory of her last life, and she most definitely has achieved the highest destination. The whole episode recalls Jada Bharata Maharaja in the Srimad-Bhagavatam.

This incident was very inspiring, reminding everyone how they should live in this material world—always remembering the Lord.

Hare Krishna.
