Why did people get out and start walking along the free way? Why do some young folks get out of the car on that normally busy road to have a game of volley ball right there? Why did dozens and dozens of motorists go to the roadside creek for a #1 or #2 ?
A traffic jam ! People got desperate. It was an accident, death included, that held westbound traffic for over three hours along the 401 Highway near Brighton, Ontario. Mahadev, Annapurna and I were crawling, or at least, the van was. For myself I couldn’t wait anymore. I started to walk with them.
The sun was strong. I stuck by those transport trailers. Their shadows were cast totally in my favour. One massive truck from “Titanium Truck Services,” at one point, was moving slow. My walk could keep up with the monster providing shade for a good stretch.
I couldn’t calculate the distance I strode, maybe 5 kms and then 1 for going back. Police came and asked everyone making the first exist off the highway on foot to return to their cars.
What puzzled some of us was, why the long wait? There was not a big storm to slow everyone down. It is not the first time that I’ve gone through this. The last time at the Labour Day jam like this was when the motorist in front of us made good use of his time by pulling out his golf clubs and cleaning them right on that notorious 401. People do get innovative when adjustments stare us in the face. You can curse or be creative. I walked and chanted and met a of people. For a usual 5-6 hour drive from Montreal to Toronto it took 13 1/2 hours. Tolerate?
