Medical professionals and healthcare heroes across the country are going above and beyond in the fight against coronavirus. This week, GBC Strategic Planning Team (SPT) invites you to meet, hear and learn from Krsnadasa Kaviraja Das on how to responsibly play our part in this fight. He is one of the many unsung devotee heroes who have put their own lives on the line to help others during the COVID-19 pandemic.
About Krsnadasa Kaviraja Das
Born and raised near Montreal and at age 17 was attending a pre med program at McGill University when I first saw the devotees on Harinam. Unlike more advanced devotees I was not immediately attracted to the Holy Name, but thought that the devotees were rather crazy. It wasn’t until 2 years later after reading books such as “Be Here Now” and Autobiography of a Yogi” that I was approached by a “blooped” devotee who explained Bhagavad-gita As It Is to me. After that I was eager to meet and hear from the devotees. I moved into the Ottawa, Ontario, Canada temple in 1974. I received initiation from our Founder-Acharya A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Srila Prabhupada in New Vrndavan in July ’74 at the age of 19.
I was a sankirtan brahmacari in Ottawa for 2.5 years and then had an “arranged” marriage to my present wife Purnamasi dd. January 2021 will be our 43rd anniversary.
We were “traded” to the Toronto temple in 1979. I have been a sankirtan devotee, treasurer, and vice president of ISKCON Toronto over the years.
With 2 young daughters in 1986, I was encouraged by the temple to find employment to support my family and the temple, and so returned to college to pursue my career as a Respiratory Therapist. I continued to serve ISKCON Toronto over the years as a member of the Temple Council and sankirtan devotee.
In 2005 I became a GBC Deputy and in 2008 became Chair of the Deputies, a service I am still working on.
As a Respiratory Therapist I have worked in 4 different hospitals with the longest stint at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto from 1999 to 2018. I am presently working as a Respiratory Therapist in our local hospital in Lindsay, Ontario, Canada.
