Generally we find that four gross needs namely sleeping, mating, eating and defending are basic necessities which are predominant in both animal and human society. When these basic four needs get fulfilled in one’s life one desires for subtle needs like love, affection, adoration, friendship etc. which exhibited through expansion of family, community, society , nation and so on . Every living entity socializes or attempts to make any relationships because of desire to relish some sort of taste derived from these kind of engagement. The pleasures which we derive from any kind of relationships are technically called Rasa. Such Rasa are of different varieties. In the revealed scriptures the following twelve varieties of rasas are enumerated:
- raudra (anger)
- adbhuta (wonder)
- śṛńgāra (conjugal love),
- hāsya (comedy)
- vīra (chivalry)
- dayā (mercy)
- dāsya (servitorship),
- sakhya (fraternity)
- bhayānaka (horror)
- bībhatsa (shock)
- śānta (neutrality)
- vātsalya (parenthood).
The sum total of all these rasas is called affection or love. Primarily, such signs of love are manifested in adoration, service, friendship, paternal affection, and conjugal love. And when these five are absent, love is present indirectly in anger, wonder, comedy, chivalry, fear, shock and so on.
For example, when a man is in love with a woman, the rasa is called conjugal love. But when such love affairs are disturbed there may be wonder, anger, shock, or even horror. Sometimes love affairs between two persons culminate in ghastly murder scenes.
We hanker for relationships because its soul inherent nature. And its present in us because its present in Supreme Lord also as we find in Vedanta sutra 1.1.2: janmady asya yatah ~ “The Brahman(Supreme Lord) is He from whom everything is emanating” . So as we are part and parcel of Supreme Brahman (Lord) we also inherits the quality of Love, Friendship, mercy, humour and all other subtle expression. Supreme Lord is known as reservoir of all pleasure that’s why he is known as Krishna. Vedanta sutra says Vedanta Sutra 1.1.6: Anandamayobhysat ~ Brahman is full of Bliss” so as supreme Lord Krishna is full of bliss we are also full of bliss and by nature pleasure seeking being a tiny part of him.
But in material existence being forget full of our relationship with God we exhibit our love, friendship, affection to falsehood, in the name of lover, friends, leaders etc and thus when we don’t maintain these relationships due to being temporary existence of them our perverted nature comes out as wonder, anger, shock, horror , greed etc.
Vedas says every living entity has its constitutional position, which is endowed with a particular type of rasa to be exchanged with the Personality of Godhead. So when we direct our love, adoration, friendship, parental affection and so on from falsehood to the truth. I.e. directs towards supreme Lord Krishna then our love, friendships get perfection and we can exhibits our expression of heart eternally.
