Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Matajis,
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

Yesterday HG Narahari Prabhuji had written a nice offering on "The Proper Utilisation of Our Tongue", wherein he had mentioned about the importance of utilising this rare and valuable gift of devotional service. Indeed we are all very very fortunate to have been blessed with human birth now, especially when His Divine Grace Srila Prabhupada has very kindly translated the scriptures like Bhagavad Gita, Srimad Bhagavatam, Caitanya Caritamrta and so many other books in a language which is understandable by all. We all have this golden opportunity to access this treasure house of transcendental knowledge. So we should make the best use of it, by studying these books. But mere studying alone does not suffice. Our study of scriptures should result in improvement in our behaviour. For example, when a building catches fire, if the security simply reads out the ways of extinguishing the fire from the manual, without actually following the instructions to put off the fire, the whole building will burn down to ashes. Similarly we are sure to suffer,  if we don't follow scriptural injunctions. Scriptures gives us the list of "do's" and "dont's" in life. When we study them, we should sincerely endeavour to practise the same in our lives. Lord Krishna says in Bhagavad Gita verses 16.23-24

yah shaastra vidhim utsrjya / vartate kaama kaaratah
na sa siddhim avaapnoti / na sukham na paraam gatim
tasmaac chaastram pramaanam te / kaaryaakaarya vyavasthitau
jnaatvaa shaastra vidhaanoktam / karma kartum ihaarhasi

"He who discards scriptural injunctions and acts according to his own whims attains neither perfection, nor happiness, nor the supreme destination. One should therefore understand what is duty and what is not duty by the regulations of the scriptures. Knowing such rules and regulations, one should act so that he may gradually be elevated."

In one of his diaries our beloved spiritual master H H Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj has mentioned a very nice verse from scriptures.

shaastraany adheetyaapi bhavanti moorkhaa
yastu kriyaavaan purushah sa vidvaan
sucintitam caushadam aaturaanaam
na naama maatrena karotyarogam
"Even after studying scriptures, if one fails to abide by scriptural injunctions, if one does not follow the instructions given in the scriptures, then he remains a fool. Just like how simply by thinking of the medicine name, however strong and powerful it may be, we will not be cured of the disease unless we use it. "

Our goal of life is not to become professional reciters or scholars of Srimad Bhagavatam. But as Maharaj always insists we should try to practise Bhagavatam in our lives. His Divine Grace Srila Prabhupada, in introduction of Srimad Bhagavatam very nicely says, "The person Bhagavatam is one whose very life is Srimad-Bhagavatam in practice." The words of such person Bhagavatas like Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva are very potent and pure and even now have a great impact in the life of so many souls, who have not even seen them. This is because they practised what they studied and preached what they practised. So we must also make a genuine effort to improve our behaviour and abide by scriptures.

To conclude let us remember the golden words of Maharaj, "If we really want to cure our disease, we should try and follow at least one verse from Bhagavatam for the rest of our lives. If not, we are useless."

Thank you very much,
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva,
Sudarshana devi dasi.
