In this video, HH Sacinandana Swami shares insights on controlling and focusing the mind, especially during the practice of chanting the Holy Name. He explains that the mind, much like a vast storage of memories and distractions, must be “turned off” to focus solely on Krishna. Swami references various teachings from saints and scriptures on how to manage the mind: for example, Rupa Goswami encourages lovingly directing the mind towards holy topics, while Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur suggests a more forceful approach by “beating the mind” into obedience. Another approach from Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam’s Fifth Canto advises simply ignoring distracting thoughts, which tend to dissolve on their own over time. Swami recommends being fully present in each moment of chanting, concentrating solely on the Maha Mantra, and avoiding dwelling on past or future thoughts. He concludes by advising practitioners to gather their mind back from distractions and, through prayer, focus it on Krishna with sincere attention.
