Difference between Yajna & Tapa

Hare Krsna

Please accept my humble obeisance. All glories to Srila Prabhupada

In tapasya we obtain a certain fruit of our tapasya. In Yajna also we obtain certain fruit of the Sacrifice. All paths lead to Krsna either directly or indirectly. Whether one is a karma yogi, jnana yogi dhyana yogi or Bhakti yogi which ever path one takes the rule is to know Krsna.

Yajna is done to attain renunciation through wisdom. Initially it is done to enjoy but over a period of time one gets purified and learns the lesson of renunciation the way the Pandavas learnt.  After all the asvamedha yajna, gomedha yajna, rajasuya yajna, and becoming the emperor of the whole universe be Pandavas, King Anga, Bharth Maharj they lost taste for such opulence power and control and renounced everything at the end.

Coming to tapasya the difference is when performed for a selfish cause the end result is as we have read of Hiranyaksha, Ravana... it cannot be enjoyed it is destroyed.

When Tapasya is performed to harm others is also destroys the performer itself.

When Tapasya is performed to enter the higher realm it is checked to realize ones failure.

Only when tapasya is form with good genuine intention either to elevate oneself or elevate oneself by elevating others which is the best form of tapasya only the the results of tapasya does not destroy the merits of the person.
When yajna performed in the right mood one enjoyed and distributes that mood of enjoyment.
When Tapasya is performed in the right mood one self restrained and distributes the mood of self restraint.

For example we eat everyday but during ekadasi we restrict eating that is tapasya once in every 15 days instead of enjoying eating we restrict eating and control the tongue of its taste. This tapasya is a reminder for one who is enjoying the material world as permanent that there is a higher cause wake up to the reminder. This tapas plays a role in elevation. Yajna plays a role in helping one lead a righteous life. All of this is done in the right mood of a Karma yogi to get connected to Krsna.
All of this yajna dana tapa kriya are karma kadiya and when done in the right mood for krsna then one is considered a Yogi/ Karma Yogi. 4 purusharthas (Dharma Artha Kama leads to Moksha when followed in right way) must be followed by every one.
