Difference between Gyan & Vigyan

I wish to share the wonderful lecture delivered by His Divine Grace Purushottam Swamy Maharaj at ISKCON, Perambur Temple, Chennai on 16.01.2011.

Difference between Gyan &  Vigyan

A man suffering from severe stomachache due to severe hungry and other acidity problems.  He feels relaxed pressing his stomach to a pillar by hugging the pillar.  But the moment he leaves the pillar, he starts getting the pain.

A stranger seeing the suffering of other person; offers some eatables to eat so that the other person would be relieved from the pain and suffering.  But the person who is suffering is not prepared to leave the pillar that he was hugging and at the same time, he want to eat the eatables given by the stranger to get relieved from the pain and suffering, which he is unable to do.

So, that the person remaining in the same position (hugging the pillar with both his hands) takes the eatables from the stranger.  But since his mouth is on the other end, pillar is in between the eatables and mouth, he is unable to eat the eatables and get relieved from the stomachache and acidity problem.

Here, our Guru Maharaj explains that we all are just like the person, who is having so many aches in our day to day life.  The PILLAR is referred to as MAYA (comforts & Luxuries), that gives temporary relief; when hugged and the moment, we are away from the comforts & luxuries, our pain & suffering starts.

As in the story, the stranger gives eatables to eat; so that his pain & suffering would be cured; similarly, GOD is giving us abundant NECTAR for us through HIS divine instructions through Bhagavad Gita, Bhagavatam & many other scriptures.  Though we are having NECTAR in our hands, we are NOT drinking / eating it, hence suffering with enormous pains and sufferings throughout our lives.

We have Gyan but we do NOT have Vigyan.  Practical implementation of Knowledge is called Vigyan (Wisdom).  As long as WE DO NOT implement the Gyan available with us, our lives would be filled with miseries, sorrows, pains & sufferings, just like that of a person in the story holding eatables in the hand but not eating, FOR WHICH, WE CANNOT BLAME KRISHNA, AT ALL
