This does not mean that, one can deviate from the basics. To Bhagavan Sri Krishna, the Vedas are very important . Bhagavan has explained it in detail in Bhagavad Gita. After accepting Sri Krishna as Ishta-devata, Bhakta should consistently ( minimum daily) , practise  chanting *Nama-Japam*. Hare Krishna mahamantra is very easy and supremely effective . One can chant it anytime . *Vishnu-Sahasranama* chanting in a puja-room or temple is very powerful .Such a chanting quickly activates Bhagavan Sri Krishna Himself in the chanter’s heart, thus elevating him/her to the grade of *Vaishnava* .

There is no point in talking about Gita, if you don’t have faith in Sri Krishna . For example, look at Mr.Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India . He was a Brahmin by birth but believed in Atheism . He enjoyed meat eating and other materialistic pleasures, since it was part of his western culture  . He missed no opportunity to rubbish the Vedic scriptures. Occasionally he referred to Gita, to spice up his speeches . Such a person can never become a Krishna- Bhakta.There is no in-built facility within him to connect with Bhagavan Sri Krishna .

A Bhakta need not be very intelligent . When he surrender totally to Bhagavan Sri Krishna and perform Nama-Japam with faith, Bhagavan Himself will bless him with divine-wisdom to understand and practise Bhagavad-Gita .

Bhagavan Sri Krishna says in Srimad Bhagavad Gita  (18.65-67):

“Fix your mind on Me ( Sri Krishna), become My devotee, offer service to Me, bow down to Me, and you shall certainly reach Me. I promise you because you are My very dear friend. Abandon all varieties of religion and just surrender unto Me completely with faith and devotion. I shall liberate you from all sinful reactions. Do not grieve.This confidential knowledge (Gita), should never be spoken by you to one who is devoid of austerity, who is without Bhakti, who does not desire to listen, or is envious of Krishna .). ”
