Mind is like a naughty child who will always remember past bad habits but if the mind is somehow rendered humble and submissive in the company of Vaishnavas and one has made some amount of spiritual progress then we find that the mind becomes calm and the old pursuit of sense gratification is gone. Occasionally the mind may hanker for old sense gratification but generally the mind then pursues Krishna Consciousness things only.If mind is not controlled, it will trouble aggressively. Also habits die hard. For Example:- if you wash cloth with super Rin, the whole dirt goes but the ink spot doesn’t go. Whatever you do, it doesn’t go away easily. Similarly sometimes you feel that the habit has gone but again it comes back. The soul can be peaceful if intelligence is stout and strong then the mind and senses can also be controlled. The senses are the outlets for lust. Above the senses is the mind.Bhagavad Gita 3.42 saysindriyani parany ahur indriyebhyah parah manahmanasas tu para buddhir yo buddhir paratas tu sahThe working senses are superior to dull matter; mind is higher than the senses; intelligence is still higher than the mind; and he [the soul] is even higher than the intelligence. All the senses are the faithful loyal servants of the mind. Intelligence is even beyond the mind and atma is even beyond buddhi.Srila Prabhupada writes in the purport, “If by intelligence one engages one's mind in Krishna consciousness, by complete surrender unto the Supreme Personality of Godhead, then, automatically the mind becomes stronger, and even though the senses are very strong, like serpents, they will be no more effective than serpents with broken fangs”.
