Regarding tonight’s meeting at Alachua City Hall:
Here is a little snippet. The meeting tonight is where the 5 commissioners vote on a Farmland plan. It will be intense as the developers have been pressuring commissioners to vote yes.
Yes – 60 acres along 441, just north of Publix on left, will be turned into a mixed-use development concept that includes 203 homes, a shopping center, future retail, three sit-down restaurants, three fast-food restaurants, a coffee shop with drive-through, a gas station with 16 pumps, and an auto service center. I have heard that it includes a Walmart. (And that is the end of Alachua as it was …)
If they vote no (it takes 3 out of 5. We already know Jackson and Fletcher will vote no. But it remains to be seen if another commissioner will vote no.) then that is the end of it. And the town is saved. Then maybe they will go back to proposal for 7 acres (reasonable) instead of 60.
There is a traffic study revealing that that 441 cannot handle the amount of traffic from this proposal. But the planners may have some creative excuse of why it is ok to make 441 through Alachua a nightmare and dangerous (more than it is at 5-6pm).
So many of us will be there because we are dead against Alachua becoming an exit shopping mall. Each city resident gets 3 minutes to say what they think about this. The meeting will go on for hours. I will not be able to stay “all night” but others will.
