Benefits of Adorning the Deity form of Lord

Benefits of Adorning the Deity form of Lord

According to ISKCON Founder-Acharya Srila A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada and other senior Acharyas, the daily service and ornamentation of the Lord (Archa-vigraha) is not merely a ritual, rather it is a vital component (Archanam) of devotional practice (*sadhana-bhakti*). Based on Srila Prabhupada’s various letters and lectures, as well as the guidelines of ISKCON’s 'Deity Worship Ministry,' the primary spiritual benefits derived from beautifully adorning the Lord—along with the relevant statements—are as follows:
1. Purification of the heart – During a lecture in Calcutta on February 4, 1977, Srila Prabhupada clearly stated: "The more you cleanse the temple and adorn the Lord, the more your heart becomes purified and adorned with spiritual qualities."

2. Freedom from material desires and distractions – By nature, the human mind is attracted to beautiful things. When a devotee performs the exquisite *shringar* (adorning) of Lord Sri Krishna, their attachment to material beauty begins to fade. According to Srila Prabhupada, merely beholding the Lord’s smiling and beautifully adorned Deity form destroys material lust and sinful tendencies within a person's heart.
3. Preventing the 'Vigraha' (Deity) from becoming a 'Galagraha' (burden) – There is a well-known saying in ISKCON’s rules and scriptures: "If we do not regularly engage in the Lord's service, shringar, kirtan and hearing, the 'Vigraha' will become a 'Galagraha'—a burden around our necks." Performing shringar keeps the sentiment alive within the devotee that the Lord is personally present, thereby preventing monotony in devotion.
4. Proper use of the senses – Our senses (eyes, hands, mind) are always eager to be active. When hands and intellect are engaged in stitching the Lord's garments, making garlands, applying sandalwood paste to His limbs, and adorning Him with jewelry, the senses undergo complete spiritualization. This is the finest form of active meditation.
5. Establishing a personal relationship with the Lord-
Srila Prabhupada used to say that Lord Krishna is so great that comprehending or touching His cosmic form is impossible. However, to bestow mercy upon His devotees, He manifests as the ' *Archa-Vigraha* ' (Deity form) so that we may care Him, dress Him, and offer Him food (*bhoga*). As you lovingly adorn Him, the Lord, too, begins to reciprocate by establishing a personal and loving relationship with you.
