Become less self absorbed

A person who is self-absorbed takes him or herself extremely seriously. They value their own time – but no one else’s.  They are usually quite selfish with their time, love, and money, in addition to lacking compassion for those less fortunate.

Self-absorbed people are arrogant and often treat others as instruments or objects to get something they want. They usually see only one point of view – their own. They are right, and everyone else is wrong, unless, of course, you agree with them.

People who are self-absorbed can be rude, insensitive to the feelings of others, and primarily interested in themselves – their own wants, needs, and desires.

Being self-absorbed is an ugly human quality. Beyond that, being self-absorbed is highly stressful – everything bothers or frustrates them. It seems that nothing is ever good enough.

Self-absorbed people often have very poor learning curves. Since they don’t listen well and aren’t interested in other people, they don’t have the advantage of learning from them.

  • Hare Krishna Vinay Prabhu,

Please accept my humble obeisances, all glories to Srila Prabhupaa and all Vaisnavas,

Thank you for posting an interesting article on 'becoming less self absorbed'.   I have also obobserved that being self absorbed will give a false sense of security to people, we may feel that it is a 'dog eat dog world' (stringent competition ) and the only way to survive is  by being self absorbed.

We also have the theory of Darwinism which  propagates the idea of ' survival of the fittest' . Personally I do not believe in the theory of evolution because of the several reasons , one of the simple rational reason being there is no missing link found between apes and man. It is a different subject in itself, what I am trying to convey is that in this age of kali yuga (which is age of quarrel and hipocrasy)  one may getting rewarded for being ' self absorbed' in the short term. In the long run it may be counter productive to be self absorbed which we may not realise initially.

People in the path of Krishna conciounsess  may appreciate that being not  self absorbed is a good trait to develop. Having said that we may be living with people who are our immediate family of friends or collegues who  may not have the the same view.

I wish to seek opinion from you / other Vaisnavas to see as how can one deal with those people who are near and dear to us but who may feel that being self absorbed is fine or may not be aware at all that they are self absorbed.

Your advice/ suggestions are very much appreciated.
