Hare Krishna Prabhujis and Mathajis,

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva.

Lord Krishna says in Bhagavad Gita verse 18.28:

ayuktah praakrtah stabdhah / shatho naishkrtiko 'lasah
vishaadi deergha-sutree ca / kartaa taamasa ucyate

"The worker who is always engaged in work against the injunctions of the scripture, who is materialistic, obstinate, cheating and expert in insulting others, and who is lazy, always morose and procrastinating is said to be a worker in the mode of ignorance."

Scriptures are like our mothers and they guide us in every step of life to take us to our real father Krishna. A mother is always best well-wisher for her child. But when the child neglects the mother's words and goes against it, it suffers a lot. Mothers may not be able to be with us all the time. But Krishna has given us scriptures like Gita and Bhagavatam whom we can take shelter and follow under the guidance of bona-fide spiritual master. In spite of being blessed with these wonderful gifts, if we still go against them we will definitely be doomed. Out of lethargy, if we skip to do our sadhana thinking that who is going to notice then we are really making a fool of ourselves. We should not try to misinterpret the scriptures (for eg: we should not out of lethargy do only little service, taking advantage of svalpam apyasya dharmasya) to justify our laziness as we can never cheat or out-smart Krishna. When we are capable of serving and have promised Guru and Krishna to do something and if we don't abide by it due to our laziness, we will definitely have to face the consequence. So we should never give way to laziness or attempt to cheat Guru and Krishna.

Once there was a king who told some of his workers to dig a pond. Once the pond was dug, the king made an announcement to his people saying that one person from each household has to bring a glass of milk during the night and pour it into the pond. So, the pond should be full of milk by the morning. After receiving the order, everyone went home.

One man prepared to take the milk during the night. He thought that since everyone will bring milk, he could just hide a glass of water and pour inside the pond. Because it will be dark at night no one will notice. So he quickly went and poured the water in the pond and came back. In the morning, the king came to visit the pond and to his surprise the pond was only filled with water! What has happened is that everyone was thinking like the other man that “I don't have to put the milk, someone else will do it."

Moral : Irrespective of what other people are following or not, we must continue to do our prescribed duties and devotional service sincerely and honestly, without duplicity or cheating propensity.

I pray at the lotus feet of Srila Gurudeva and Srila Prabhupada that I give up my lethargic nature and cheating propensity and serve them to the best of my ability.

Thank you very much.
Yours in service of Srila Prabhupada and Srila Gurudeva,
Sudarshana devi dasi.
