I was a junior in high school and had one more year to go before I could be free of all my bad association, but the Laguna temple president Rsabhadeva recommended me to Prabhupada for initiation, so a letter went off to him.
So what did Krishna do while the letter went to Srila Prabhupada? My parents put me in the Santa Ana Psychiatric Center as a way of deprogramming me.
All of a sudden I wasn't coming to the temple, so Ratnanabha, who worked for the phone company, tapped my parents' phone and overheard my mother saying where I was. A devotee named Bhojadeva, impersonating a family member checking out the facilities for his "grandpa", told me to hang tight, and that they'd figure out a way for me to escape. This facility was right out of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest"!
Anyway, I escaped one warm summer night, and then rendezvoused with the devotees at a devotee's apartment. Rsabhadeva arrived, wrapped tulasi neck beads around my neck, and said "Your name is Bhayahari das, which means 'Krishna delivers you from fear'!"
At that moment my hair stood on end and a feeling of intense gratitude filled my heart.
