A humorous look at Authority then and now...Life was so much simpler a few hundred thousand years ago. Agreed, there were Demons and Rakshasas and what have you, (not that there aren't any walking around today; it's just that they resemble humans more closely! :-D), but there was a very clear idea about Authority. And the Vedas were the last word in Authority. The Vedas said this was how Creation took place and everyone accepted it.The Vedas said this was the way schooling should be done, marriages should be performed, wars should be fought, administration should be done...the Vedas taught us everything about human life (except perhaps what would be going on in our wives's minds at any given time, but that's a different story! :-D).And things were done in that particular Vedic manner, because the Vedas said so. It was the last word in everything. And most importantly, the Vedas said that Lord Krishna was the Supreme God, the Lord of the all Gods and everyone accepted it. Of course, there has to be the odd troublemaker everywhere. So there were a few miscreants like Hiranyakashipu etc who did not accept Lord Krishna . But bad ol' Hiranyakashipu at least accepted that there is someone called Lord Narayana!Alas, the Hiranyakashipus of today's world are not gallant enough to even entertain the possibility of the existence of a God, leave alone the concept of a Supreme Lord! And the Vedas for them are either outdated rules and regulations for the 'primitive' races that lived in India long ago. Or even worse, as one atheist condescendingly told me, the product of the certain fertile imaginations created and propagated down the centuries! If you even just mention Vedic terminology like Shruti and Smriti, they'd probably try to figure out which new entrant in Bollywood goes by that name. They'd even voice their grave opinion that if these starlets want to succeed, they had better change their outdated names! It's a good thing that the Rishis of that time like Durvasa Muni did not live in today's world. He would be staggered at the number of people whom he'd want to curse for sacrilege! Indeed, he would probably run out of curses! :-DAtheists like some Scientists, Politicians, Consumer-related Corporates and the Media constitute Authority today. They declare what is knowledge, they declare when, how and why everything is to be done.So if the Scientists want to make a monkey out of your ancestors (and you!) you have to glibly agree. If a company says that your dark complexion is a curse and that you will never get a smart handsome husband because of it, you are expected to run out to the nearest store and spend thousands on creams that will most assuredly make you fairer and lovelier! Similarly, a man must wear a particular branded suit to become the 'complete man'Earlier, one would look for a spouse who had the same interests as you. Now the Politicians say now it's OK for you and your spouse to have the same interests...and even the same sex!And the Media...well, less said , the better!Sometimes I wish one day Krishna would show his Universal Form to everyone on Earth so that everyone knows for sure What and Who is the Final Authority!Hare Krishna!
