Approaching the Authorities

Hare Krsna

Please accept my humble obeisance. All glories to Srila Prabhupada

While describing the birth of demons Hiranyakashipu and Hiranyaksha to Vidura, Maitreya Muni says in Srimad Bhagavatam verse 3.17.1

maitreya uvaaca
nishamyaatma-bhuvaa geetam / kaaranam shankayojjhitaah
tatah sarve nyavartanta / tridivaaya divaukasah

Sri Maitreya said: "The demigods, the inhabitants of the higher planets, were freed from all fear upon hearing the cause of the darkness explained by Brahma, who was born from Vishnu. Thus they all returned to their respective planets."

Here it is interesting to note that demigods also became fearful when they saw darkness spreading everywhere. They didn't know the reason behind the darkness either. But one thing we can notice with demigods is that whenever they have some problem, they immediately approach Lord Brahma. They approach him, ask for his guidance and then later act accordingly. His Divine Grace very nicely mentions in the purport to the above verse, "The difference between the demigods and ordinary human beings is that the demigods approach authority, whereas the inhabitants of this earth defy authority. If people would only approach the authority, then every adverse condition in this universe could be rectified. Arjuna was also disturbed on the Battlefield of Kurukshetra, but he approached the authority, Krishna, and his problem was solved. The conclusive instruction of this incident is that we may be disturbed by some material condition, but if we approach the authority who can actually explain the matter, then our problem is solved. The demigods approached Brahma for the meaning of the disturbance, and after hearing from him they were satisfied and returned home peacefully."

Many a times we don't want to approach the authority (Guru, Sadhu, shastras) because we don't want to surrender to their instructions. As a result we keep suffering perpetually. This is actually our own foolishness. If we really want to get out of fearful material existence, then the solution is simple. First we should approach the authority and then we should submissively listen to their instructions and follow them. Then even amidst great dangers, we would be able to live peacefully on the strength of shelter of the authority. Our beloved spiritual master H H Mahavishnu Goswami Maharaj says, "You can be a rascal; you may not have any knowledge of the scriptures; you may not have material education; no money nothing. I am not interested in those things. If you obey me cent percent, that is all I want. That is enough. You leave Krishna to me and I will handle Krishna on your behalf.'"

Such is the power of obedience to Guru. When we approach the spiritual master and obey him cent-percent, then Guru guarantees us all protection. Krishna is so kind that He has given us the independence to choose whether to take shelter of authorities and live peacefully or to lead life whimsically and suffer. It is up to us to make the right choice.
