Accidents

Dear Devotees
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to SrilaPrabhupada. Of course we know that in the scheme of things there are noaccidents. But still we have the old addage "An ounze of prevention isworth a pound of cure."
In the last few years in Vrndavan, we have had three major gascylinder accidents, two within the last year, and two fatal. The non-fatalone had the potential to blow up the entire gurukula building because 5other cylinders were near enough to cause a big problem.
For those who use gas for cooking or heating, it is imperative tomake sure there is enough ventilation to avoid the inevitable disaster ofgas inhalation. Insulating your room is not a great advantage when usingthese cylinders, especially over here in India. Gas is cheaper, but life isnot so cheap. Don't use gas all night.
If you smell gas, DON'T light a match until the smell is gone. Those of you in the West know that if you smell gas in your oven, you darenot light it until aired out. And even then, you don't put your face tooclose to the thing.
For those who use these cylinders, it is very practical to turn offthe cylinder itself when finished cooking, etc. It is also practical tokeep any extras stored outdoors.
If you happen upon a victim of gas inhalation and it's not too late, artificial respiration is usually effective. Due to the fear ofcontamination of all kinds of unmentionable things, you might protectyourself by putting some sort of cloth which will allow the air to go in butavoid contact with the saliva of the victim.
I hope this meets you well.

Your servant,

Parvati devi dasi
