A HYMN TO KRISHNA

BANSHI SHOBHITA KARA MADHURA
NILA JALAJA ATNU SHYAAMA
ARUNA ADHARA JANU BIMBA PHALA
NAYANA KAMALA ABHIRAAMA PUURANA INDU ARAVINDA MUKHA
PIITAAMBARA SUCHI SAAJA
JAI MANAMOHANA MADANA CHAVI
KRISNACHANDRA MAHAARAAJA

Glory to you, O Lord Krishna! Possessed by the comeliness of love, you enchant the minds of all. In your shapely hands lies the flute, the sound of which is ever sweet, while your body, dark of hue, is like the blue lotus; your ruddy lips like the bimba fruit, eyes like lovely lotuses, your lotus-face like the full moon and you are beautifully attired in your yellow silken dress.

JAI JAI YADUNANDANA JAGA VANDANA
JAI VASUDEVA DEVAKII NANDANA
JAI YASODHAA SUTA NANDA DULAARE
JAI PRABHU BHAKTANA KE RAKHAVAARE

Glory, glory, glory to you, O delight of the Yadus; glory to one who is universally adored and who brings joy to Vasudeva and Devaki! Glory to the beloved son of Yashodha and Nanda and to him who is the protector of his votaries.

JAI NATANAAGARA NAAGA NATHAIYAA
KRISHNA KANHAIYAA DHENU CHARAIYAA
PUNI NAKHA PARA PRABHU GIRIVARA DHAARO
AAO DIINANA KASHTA NIVAARO

Glory to you, the most accomplished and courteous of all showmen and subduer of the dread Naga! Glory to you, O Krishna, grazer of cows and upholder of best of mountains on the nail of your small finger! Pray come and rid the helpless of their distress.

BANSHI MADHURA ADHARA DHARI TERO
HOVE PUURANA MANORATHA MERO
AAO HARI PUNI MAAKHANA KHAAO
AAJA LAAJA BHAKTANA KII RAAKHO

Keep your flute, O Hari, on your lips and play a sweet, enchanting tune and fulfill one of my ardent wishes. Pray come and partake once again of my stock of butter and protect your votary’s honour this day.

GOLA KAPOLA CHIBUKA ARUNAARE
MRIDU MUSKAANA MOHINI DAARE
RAAJITA RAAJIIVA NAYANA VISHAALAA
MORA MUKUTA VAIJANTIIMAALAA

Endowed with chubby cheeks, you possess a reddish chin ad a smile both sweet and bewitching. Your large eyes so splendid to look at, are lotus-like and on your head is a coronet made of peacock feathers and a wreath named Vaijayanti.

KUNDALA SHRAVANA PIITA PATA AACHE
KATI KINKINII KAACHANI KAACHE
NIILA JALAJA SUNDARA TANA SOHAI
CHAVI LAKHI SURA NARA MUNI MANA MOHAI

The pendants in your ears and your yellow silk attire are extremely elegant and becoming, while the small bells on your girdle and the lovely kachani (a loin cloth with loose ends tucked at the rear) from waist to ankle look so graceful. Your body which is like a blue lotus, is so lustrous that the gods, men and ascetics who look at it are spellbound.

MASTAKA TILAKA ALAKA GHUNGARAALE
AAO SHYAAMA BAANSURII VAALE
KARI PAYA PAANA PUUTANAAHIN TAARYO
AKAA-BAKAA KAAGAASURA MAARYO

On your forehead a lovely caste-mark and on your head ringlets of hair, O Krishna the flute-player! Pray come (and be my deliverer), Having sucked Putana (the demoness sent by Kansa to kill you), you put her to death and released her from the bondage of birth and death; you also destroyed many a fiend such as Akaasura, Bakaasura and Kaagasura.

MADHUVANA JALATA AGINA JABA JVAALAA
BHE SHIITALA LAKHATAHIN NANDALAALAA
JABA SURAPATI BRIJA CHADHYO RISAAII
MUUSARDHAARA BHARI BARASAAII

When Madhuvana was in flames, your very sight, O son of Nanda, quenched the fire, when in a frenzy of fury Indra invaded vraja and sent pouring rain-

LAKHATA LAKHATA BRIJA CHAHATA BAHAAYO|
GOVARDHANA NAKHA DHARI BACHAAYO||
LAKHI YASHODAA MANA BHRAMA ADHIKAARI|
MUKHA MAHAN CHAUDAAHA BHUVANA DIKHAAII||

In order that strong rain might sweep it off in an instant, you lifted the Govardhana and balancing it on the nail of your small finger saved the land ad its people. When you saw Yashodha utterly disquieted, you revealed to her all the fourteen spheres concentrated within your mouth.

DUSHTA KANSA ATI UDHAMA MACHAAYO
KOTI KAMALA KAHAN PHUULA MANGAAYO
AATHI KAALIYAAHIN KO TUMA LIINHO
CHARANA CHINHA DAI NIRBHAYA KIINHO

When wicked Kansa was causing great havoc and demanded that a crore of lotus flowers be sent to him, you subdued Kaliya (the venomous black snake, also a symbol of evil) and having put your foot-prints on his head, rendered him fearless.

KARI GOPINA SANGA RAASA VILAASAA
SABA KII PUURA KARII ABHILAASAA
AGANITA MAHAA ASURA SANHAARYO
KANSAHI KESHA PAKADA DAI MAARYO

Having played many a love game with the Gopis, you fulfilled the desires of all the cowgirls (milkmaids); (displaying extraordinary valour) you slaughtered myriad of dreadful demons and slew Kansa by grabbing his hair (and overthrowing him).

MAATU PITAA KII BANDI CHUDAAYO
UGRASENA KAHAN RAAJA DILAAYO
MAHI SE MRITAKA CHAHON SUTA LAAYO
MAATU DEVAKII SHOKA MITAAYO
NARAKAASURA MURA KHALA SANHAARII
LAAYE SHATADASHA SAHASA KUMARII

You had your parents released from (Kansa’s prison) and restored the sovereignty to Ugrasena. O Krishna you brought back the six dead sons of Devaki from the underworld and relieved her of her grief. Then having slain Narakasura and Mura, you had sixteen thousand maidens released from prison.

DAII BHIIMA TRINA CHIIRA ISHAARAA
JARAASANDHA RAAKSHASA KAHAN MAARAA
ASURA VRIKAASURA AADIKA MAARYA-U
NIJA BHAKTANA KARA KASHTHA NIVAARYA-U

Signalling to Bhima to tear Jarsandha apart, you saved him ad had the demon Jarsandha killed. You also slew such fiends as Vrikasura and his diabolical brood and rid your devotees of their distress.

DINA SUDAAMAA KE DUKHA TAARYO
TANDULA TIINA MUTHI MUKHA DAARYO
DURYODHANA KE TYAAGYO MEVAA
KIYO VIDURA GHARA SHAAKA KALEVAA

(Compassionate that you are) you took pity on Sudama and had his impecuniousness removed by putting three handfuls of rice into your mouth. While you forsook Duryodhana’s delicacies ( the dry fruits offered by him) you enjoyed the snack meal of leafy vegetables at Vidura’s house.

LAKHI PREMA TUHII MAHIMAA BHAARII
NAUMI SHYAAMA DIINANA HITAKAARII
HAARATA MEIN PAARATHA RATHA HAANKE
LIYE CHAKRA NAHIN BALA THAAKE

O Shyama! O compassionate to the poor! Having witnessed your abounding grace and glory I bow to you; on the battlefield Kurukshetra you drove Arjuna’s chariot and still unwearied wielded your dread disc Sudarshana.

NIJA GIITAA KE GYAANA SUNAAYE
BHAKTANA HRIDAYA SUDHAA SARASAYEE
MIIRA AISII MATAVAALII
VISA PII GAII AJAAKARA TAALII

You communicated the wisdom of the Gita, the song divine and let the hearts of your devotees abound with the nectar of love. Drunk with unbounded devotion (to you), Mira gulped down poison with brimming joy.

RAANAA BHEJAA SAANPA PITAARII
SHAALIGRAAMA BANE BANAVAARII
NIJA MAAYAA TUMA VIDHIHIN DIKHAAYO
URA TE SANSHAYA SAKALA MITAAYO

When, O Banavari, Rana sent a basket of Mira with a snake in it, you assumed the form of Shaaligraam and revealing your illusory powers to Brahma, you dispelled all his misgivings.

TAVA SHATANINDAA KARI TATKAALA
JIIVANA MUKTA HAYO SHISHUPAALAA
JABAHIN DRAUPADII TERA LAGAII
DIINANAATHA LAAJA ABA JAAII

When Shishupala reviled you a hundred times, you slew him at that very instant. When with piteous cry Draupadi said, “Come, O Lord of the helpless and protect my honour.”-

TURATAHIN VASANA BANE NANDALAALAA
BADHYO CHIRA BHE ARI MUNHA KAALAA
ASA ANANTA KE NAATHA KANHAIYAA
DUUBATA BHANVARA BACHAAVAHIN NAIYAA

You, the beloved son of Nanda, became a piece of covering around her body, long enough to foil the design of her enemies. You are, O Kanhaiya, so great a guardian of the helpless orphan that you rescue every sinking boat from the whirlpool of life.

SUNDARADAASA VAASA DURVAASAA
KARATA VINAYA PRABHU PUUJAHU AASAA
NAATHA SAKALA URI KUMATI NIVAARO
CHAMAUN VEGI APARAADHA HAMAARO
KHOLO PATA ABA DARSHANA DIIJAI
BOLO KRISHNA KANHAIYAA KII JAI

O Lord, Sundardasa, an inmate of the hermitage of Durvasa, beseeches you to grant his wishes, dispel all ignorance from his heart and forgive him trespasses. May you reveal yourself to him by opening the doors of his heart. May we all cry, “ Victory, victory to you, Lord Krishna, victory to Kanhaiya!”
