A mother, wishing to encourage her son's progress at playing the piano, bought tickets to a performance by the great Polish pianist Ignace Paderewski. When the evening arrived, they found their seats near the front of the concert hall and eyed the majestic Steinway - among the finest and most respected piano brand names in the world - waiting on stage. Soon the mother found a friend to talk to, and did not notice that the boy had slipped away to amuse himself.
At 8 o' clock, the lights in the auditorium began to dim, the spotlights came on, and only then did the mother and her friend notice the boy. He was there, right up on the piano bench, innocently picking out "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" on the piano keys. His mother gasped in shock and embarrassment, but, before she could gather her wits about her and retrieve her son, the master himself appeared on stage and quickly moved to the keyboard.
He whispered gently to the boy, "Don't quit. Keep playing." Leaning over, Paderewski reached down with his left hand and began filling in the bass part. Soon, his right arm reached around the other side and improvised a delightful obligato. Together, the old master and the young novice held the crowd mesmerized with their blended and beautiful music. It was very innovative, indeed - a pleasant surprise!
What could have turned into an embarrassment got transformed to a beautiful prologue only because of the attitude and generosity of the maestro who didn't think twice before making those moments beautiful for all concerned.
The legendary coach, John Wooden said, "Consider the rights of others before your own feelings, and the feelings of others before your own rights" for, people forget what we said, what we did but never, forget how we make them feel!
