4 Stages of Determination In a Life of Devotee

1. Unconscious Incompetence – First the Karmi people have so many anarthas – a devotee is so very sensitive in comparison with the karmis. Devotees are always alert, but it is like to the degree you become cleaner in the heart, to that degree you are extremely sensitive. If you put a black dot on a lungi, nobody will notice. If you put a black spot on a dhoti, everyone can notice it. So unconscious incompetence means the Karmis are not even knowing how much incompetent they are on spiritual level.2. Next stage is Conscious Incompetence which means one knows that he has a bad habit and he is conscious of it but unable to overcome it.3. Third stage is Conscious Competence – one gradually gets over the bad habits but one has to be very alert and conscious to maintain oneself, like cycle driving in beginning stages – one has to be very alert.4. Finally one comes to the final and fourth stage of Unconscious Competence – good qualities come in the person and one doesn’t has to struggle to keep away from bad things; automatically and naturally a person is able to choose to do right. For Example:- after learning thoroughly, one drives the cycle with unconscious efforts. Our eyes have tendency to flow toward the bill boards, cinema posters and then try to study them very scrutinizingly. Some American devotees (after seeing bill boards in India) said “Even in west you don’t find such kind of dirty exposures”. Therefore the best way is to carry a book or article with us when we travel by public vehicles on the common roads. So in beginning in our stage we have to consciously endeavor to remain away from impurity, but over a period of time, when we are sufficiently pure, it becomes natural for us to be away from bad things and be in good.
