Vidyanagara Gaudia Math & Sarvabhauma Bhattacarya’s house
These two places are situated not far from each other. And on the place of Vidyanagara Gaudiya Math sometimes before used to be the school of Sarvabhauma. This small Temple was opened by Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati. Worship here is done to the big Deities of Sri Sri Goura Nitay to Whom sometimes used serve brother of Sarvabhauma Bhattacharia Vidya Vachaspati. On the left side of the Temple there is not a big grove which does not belong to anyone famous. It says that all these grew out of the pens of Lord Chaitania when He used to come here to study.
The house of Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya was destroyed. On that place also there was opened a Temple in which worship to Sri Sri Radha Krishna is done.
Story of Sarvabhauma
Srila Prabhupada writes that when Sarvabhauma was born parents named him as Vasudeva. He was born in Vidyanagara, nearly in 4 kilometers from the railway station of Navadwipa and Champahatti. His father was a very famous person – Maheshvara Visharada. It says that Sarvabhauma was a great knower of logic of his times in India. He studied for logic under the guidance of Pakshadhara Bhattacharya from Bihar, who used not to let his students to make note of his teachings. Sarvabhauma was so intelligent that memorized all knowledge by heart and coming back to Vidyanagar opened his own school. Most people say that the famous logic – Raghunatha Shiromani also was a disciple of Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya. Even though living in grhastha ashram he used to give classes even to sannyasis.
Sarvabhauma opened a school of nava-nya (new logic) at his house, where many students studied the logic. The school was continued even after the departure of the king of Orissa Prataparudra to Puri.
In Jahannatha Puri Sarvabhauma also established a school of philosophy of Vedanta. When Sarvabhauma first meet Lord Chaitania invited Him to study Vedanta to His school, but later he himself became His disciple. Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya was fortunate to see Lord Chaitania’s 6 handed form – Shadbhuja. He wrote a book of 100 verses, which is called as “Chaitania Shataka” or “Sushloka shataka”… “Gaura Ganodesha dipika”. It says that Sarvabhauma is an expansion of Brihaspati, the sage from heavenly planets.
Nimay Pandit
In His adolescence Lord Chaitania was completely merged to His studies. It seemed that nothing else interested Him. Waking up early in the morning He was in a harry to the house of Gangadas Pandit where all of his comrades waited for Him. He was a leader among His comrades. He openly used to call for others if they are ready for independent discussions. If someone in His class tried to be seemed as a well knower of Sanskrit Nimay used to laugh at him and say:
“Who is this who wants to win Me?! Who is this great scientist? Does he has an understanding of correct conjunction, so he is taking with foolish self-confidence goes into grammar? Hey, ignorant knower, you are not able to answer to my question in an open dispute!
At the Gangadas Pandit’s school Nimay was the best student. As a result learning excellently the science of logic and Sanskrit He opened His own school. In great joy He used to walk in the streets of Navadvipa along with His students, delighting everyone with His knowledge.
There were books in His hands. No one except Gangadas Pandit was able to dispute with Him. Nimay Pandit used to visit the school of Sarvabhauma and had discussions there. For that time Sarvabhauma left his place to Puri and the school was run by one of his disciples Raghunatha Shiromani.
Raghunatha Shiromani
Raghunatha was a disciple of Sarvabhauma Bhattacharya. He used to live and study in Vindyanagar. He was a great learner of the logic. Once he decided to write purports to the book “Tattva Chntamani” of a great logic Gangeshopadhya. This logic was the person who opened a school of “nava- nya” – “new logic”. He also thought Sarvabhauma.
Raghunatha’s book “Didhiti” was going to bring to him much glory. He worked very hard on that book and he was coming to the end of writing but before that the next thing happened to him:
Once Raghunatha was over crossing the river Ganges along with Lord Gauranga.
“Please, hear Me Raghunatha,” told the Lord. “Just few days back I wrote a book in logic. Would you like to look to that?”
Lord explained about His book but face of Raghunatha paled hearing that. Nimai Pandit’s book used to tell about the same topics which he used in his book and also Lord’s book used to explain subjects even deeper. Seeing Raghunatha’s sad face Lord asked:
“You became sad? Why? I though you will like My book.”
With sad voice Raghunatha answered:
“I worked very hard on that subject which is now discussing You. And my work is already coming to the end. But I see that my hard work is going to waste. Because Your book is far better than mine…
Lord Chaitania smiled, took His book and through it to the water:
“Let your work be glorified through out the world!”
