    Pradyumna (leads chanting, etc.):

    tam uvaca hrsikesah
    prahasann iva bharata
    senayor ubhayor madhye
    visidantam idam vacah
     [Bg. 2.10]

Translation: "O descendant of Bharata, at that time Krsna, smiling, in the midst of both armies, spoke the following words to the grief-stricken Arjuna."

Prabhupada: So hrsikesah, prahasann iva. Krsna began to laugh, smiling, "What a nonsense this is, Arjuna." First of all he said, "Put me." Senayor ubhayor madhye ratham sthapaya me acyuta [Bg. 1.21]. "Krsna, just put my chariot between the two parties of soldiers." And now... (coughs, aside:) Bring me water. He was so enthusiastic in the beginning that "Put my chariot between the two armies." Now this rascal is saying no yotsya, "I will not fight." Just see the rascaldom. So even Arjuna, Krsna's direct friend, maya is so strong that he also becomes a rascal, what to speak of others. First of all very enthusiasm: "Yes, put my chariot between the two armies." And now in the..., na yotsya iti govindam [Bg. 2.9], "I am not going to fight." This is rascaldom. So he was smiling, that "He is My friend, direct friend, and such a big, and he is now saying that 'I will not fight.' "

So Krsna smiling, this smiling is very significant, prahasann. Tam uvaca hrsikesah prahasann iva bharata, senayor ubhayor visidantam, lamenting. First of all he came with great enthusiasm to fight; now he is lamenting. And Krsna is mentioned here as Hrsikesa. He is solid. He is Acyuta. He is solid. He is not changed. Another significance of this word Hrsikesa... Because in Narada-Pancaratra the bhakti means hrsikesa-sevanam. Therefore this very name is mentioned here, Hrsikesa. Hrsikesa-sevanam bhaktir ucyate. Bhakti means to serve Hrsikesa, the master of the senses. And the master of senses, some rascals are describing that Krsna is immoral. He is master of senses and He is immoral. Just see how he has studied Bhagavad-gita. If Krsna is perfect brahmacari... Krsna is perfect brahmacari, for... It was declared by Bhismadeva. Bhismadeva is the first-grade brahmacari in the universe. He promised to Satyavati's father... You know the story. Satyavati's father... His, Bhismadeva's father was attracted by a fisherwoman, fishergirl. So he wanted to marry. And the father of the girl denied, "No, I cannot give my daughter to you." So "Why? I am king, I am asking your daughter." "No, you have got a son." Bhismadeva was the son of his first wife, mother Ganges. The mother Ganges was wife of Santanu Maharaja, and Bhismadeva was the only remaining son. The contract was between Santanu Maharaja and Ganges, Mother Ganges, that "I can marry you if you allow me that all the children born I shall throw in the water of the Ganges. And if you do not allow me, then immediately I shall leave your company." So Santanu Maharaja said, "All right, still, I shall marry you." So she was throwing all the children in the Ganges. So this Bhismadeva... So after all, father, so he became very much sorry, that "What is this? What kind of wife I have got? She is simply throwing all the children in the water." So at the time of Bhismadeva, Santanu Maharaja said, "No, I cannot allow it. I cannot allow it." Then mother Ganges said, "Then I am going." "Yes, you can go, I don't want you. I want this son." So he was wifeless. Again he wanted to marry the Satyavati. So the father said, "No, I cannot give my daughter to you because you have got a son, grown-up son. He will be king. So I cannot give my daughter to you to become your maidservant. Her... If I would have thought that her son would be the king, then I can offer you my daughter." So he said, "No, that is not possible." But Bhismadeva understood that "My father is attracted with this girl." So he approached. He said to the fisherman that "You can offer your daughter to my father, but you are thinking that I shall become king. So your daughter's son will be king. On this condition you can offer your daughter." So he replied, "No, I cannot." "Why?" "You may not be king, but your son may be king." Just see, this material calculation. Then at that time he said, "No, I shall not marry. That's all. I promise. I shall not marry." So he remained brahmacari. Therefore his name is Bhisma. Bhisma means very solid, firmly fixed. So he was a brahmacari. For the sake, for the satisfaction of his father's senses, he remained brahmacari.

So Bhismadeva, in Rajasuya-yajna, admitted that "Nobody is better brahmacari than Krsna. He was within the gopis, all young girls, but He remained a brahmacari. If I would have been within the gopis, I do not know what was, what would have been my condition." So therefore Krsna is the perfect brahmacari, Hrsikesa. And these rascals they are saying that Krsna is immoral. No. Krsna is perfect brahmacari. Dhira. Dhira means one who is not agitated even there is cause of being agitated. So Krsna is such a brahmacari. In spite of in His just on the verge of youthhood at the age of 15, 16, years, all the village girls were friends, they were very much attracted with Krsna's beauty. They used to come to Krsna for dancing in the village. But He was brahmacari. You will never hear that Krsna had some illicit sex. No. There was no such thing description. The dancing is description, but no contraceptive pill. No. That is no described here. Therefore He is Hrsikesa. Hrsikesa means perfect brahmacari. Vikara-hetu, even there is cause of being agitated, He is not agitated. That is Krsna. He has got thousands and thousands of devotees, and some of the devotees, if they want Krsna as lover, Krsna accepts that, but He does not require anyone else. He does not require. He is self-sufficient. He does not require anyone's help for His sense gratification. Therefore Krsna is Hrsikesa, the master of the senses.

So at least Krsna's devotees... There are many instances of Krsna's devotees. They are also... Why many? Almost all devotees, they are master of the senses, gosvami. Just like Haridasa Thakura, you know. Haridasa Thakura was young man, and the village zamindar, he was Mohammedan. So everyone was eulogizing Haridasa Thakura, such a great devotee. So the zamindar, the village zamindar, he became very much envious. So he employed one prostitute to pollute Haridasa Thakura. And she came at dead of night, nicely dressed, attractive. She was also young, very beautiful. So she proposed that "I have come, being attracted by your beauty." Haridasa Thakura said, "Yes, that's all right. Come on, sit down. Let me finish my chanting. Then we shall enjoy." So she sat down. But Haridasa Thakura chanting, he was chanting... We, we cannot chant even sixteen rounds, and he was chanting three times sixty-four rounds. How many it is?

    Revatinandana: 196.

Prabhupada: 196 rounds. That was his only business. Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna... So sometimes somebody wants to imitate Haridasa Thakura. It is not possible. So Haridasa Thakura, when it became morning, the prostitute, "Sir, now it is morning." "Yes, next night I shall... Come next night. Today I could not finish my chanting." That was a plea. In this way three days passed. Then the prostitute became converted, fell down on his..., "Sir, I came to pollute you. Now save me, I am so fallen." So Haridasa Thakura said "Yes, I know that. I could have leaved this place immediately when you came, but I wanted that you have come to me, you may be converted to this Vaisnavism." So the prostitute became a great devotee by the mercy of... Haridasa Thakura said that "You sit down in this place. You chant Hare Krsna before this tulasi plant. Now I am leaving this place."

So Krsna-bhakti is like that. Full control over the senses. As Krsna has got full control over the senses, similarly, those who are actually Krsna devotees, they have got full control over the senses. Hrsikesa. Just like Yamunacarya. He is praying, he is speaking, yad-avadhi mama cittah krsna-padaravinde nava-nava-dhamany udyatam rantum asit: "Since I have begun to feel transcendental bliss being taken shelter of the lotus feet of Krsna," yad-avadhi mama cittah krsna-padaravinde, krsna-padaravinde, the lotus feet of Krsna. "Since my citta, my heart, has been attracted by the lotus feet of Krsna," tad-avadhi bata nari-sangame, "since then, as soon as I think of sex life," bhavati mukha-vikarah, "I hate, I spit on it." This is Krsna-bhakti. Krsna-bhakti is like that. Bhakti-paresanubhava-viraktir anyatra syat. This most attractive feature in this material world is sex. That is the foundation of material life. All these people are working so hard day and night only for that sex enjoyment. Yan maithunadi-grha... They are taking so much risk. They are working, karmis, they are working so hard. What is their pleasure of life? The pleasure of life is sex. Yan maitunadi-grhamedhi-sukham hi tuccham. Very abominable activities, but that is their pleasure. This is material life. So Krsna is not like that. But the rascals, they paint picture, and that pictures are very much appreciated, that Krsna is embracing gopis.  Somebody was telling me that... Last... Who came? That Krsna's picture. So when Krsna is killing Putana, that picture they will not paint, or killing Kamsa, or... Krsna has got so many pictures. These pictures they will not, artists. They will simply paint the picture, His confidential dealings with the gopis. One who cannot understand Krsna, what is Krsna, which Vyasadeva has described what is Krsna in nine cantos, to understand Krsna, and then in the Tenth Canto he begins the birth advent of Krsna... But these rascals, they jump over immediately to the rasa-lila. First of all understand Krsna. Just like if you become a friend of some very big man, so first of all try to understand him. Then you'll try to understand his family affairs or confidential things. But these people jump over to the rasa-lila. And misunderstand. And therefore they sometimes say, "Krsna is immoral." How Krsna can be immoral? By accepting, by chanting Krsna's name, the immoral persons are becoming moral, and Krsna is immoral. Just see the foolishness. Simply by chanting Krsna's name, all immoral persons are becoming moral. And Krsna is immoral. And it is spoken by a rascal professor.

So it is very difficult. Nobody can understand Krsna without becoming a pure devotee of Krsna. Because Krsna says, bhaktya mam abhijanati yavan yas casmi tattvatah [Bg. 18.55]. Tattvatah, in truth. Tattvatah means truth. If one wants to understand Krsna as He is, then he has to take this process of devotional service, bhakta, bhakti. Hrsikena hrsikesa-sevanam bhaktir ucyate [Cc. Madhya 19.170]. When one is employed as the servitor of Hrsikesa, the master of senses. Master, and hrsikena, when your senses are also engaged in the service of the master of the senses, then you also become master of the senses. You also. Because your senses are engaged in the service of the Hrsikesa, the senses have no other opportunity to be engaged. Locked up. Sa vai manah krsna-padaravindayoh [SB 9.4.18]. So this is the process of devotional service. If you want to become master of the senses, gosvami, svami, then you should always keep your senses engaged in the service of Hrsikesa. That is the only way. Otherwise it is not possible. As soon as you become a little slack to engage your senses in the service of the master of the senses, immediately maya is there, "Come on, please." This is the process. Krsna bhuliya jiva bhoga vancha kare, pasate maya tare japatiya dhare. As soon as you forget Krsna, even for a moment, immediately maya is there: "Please, my dear friend, come here." Therefore we have to become very cautious. We cannot forget Krsna even for a moment. Therefore the chanting program, Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama... Always remember Krsna. Then maya will not be able to touch you. Mam eva ye prapadyante mayam etan taranti. Maya cannot touch. Just like Haridasa Thakura. He was engaged in the service of Hrsikesa. Maya came in full-fledged strength. Still, she was defeated; Haridasa Thakura was not defeated.

So try to understand Krsna as Hrsikesa. So Hrsikesa, Krsna, began to laugh that "He is My friend, constant associate, and such weakness. He first of all was enthusiastic to ask Me to take his chariot, senayor ubhayor madhye. Now visidantan, now he is lamenting." So... We are all fools like that. Arjuna is not fool. Arjuna has been been described as Gudakesa. How he can be fool? But he is playing the part of fool. If he does not play the part of a fool, how this Bhagavad-gita will come from the mouth of Sri Krsna? And because he is devotee, he is perfectly playing in such a way that Krsna is giving instruction. So perfect teacher and the perfect disciple, Arjuna. We have to learn from their de... Our position... Arjuna is representing just like ordinary man like us, and Krsna is Hrsikesa, giving His advice, perfect advice. If we take, if we read Bhagavad-gita in the spirit of understanding like Arjuna, the perfect disciple, and if we accept the advice and the instruction of Krsna, the perfect teacher, then we should know that we have understood Bhagavad-gita. By my mental speculation, by rascal interpretation, by showing one's scholarship, you cannot understand Bhagavad-gita. That is not possible. Submissive. Therefore in the Bhagavad-gita it is said, tad viddhi pranipatena pariprasnena sevaya [Bg. 4.34]. So we have to surrender as Arjuna, he surrendered. Sisyas te 'ham sadhi mam prapannam: [Bg. 2.7] "I surrender unto You. I become Your disciple." To become disciple means to surrender, voluntarily accepting the instruction, the advice, the order of the spiritual master. So Arjuna has already accepted that. Although he is speaking that na yotsye, "Krsna, I shall not fight." But master, when He explains everything, he will fight. Master's order. Not to fight, that is his own sense gratification. And to fight in spite of he had no desire to fight, that is the satisfaction of the master. This is the sum and substance of Bhagavad-gita.

So Krsna, seeing Arjuna, visidantam very much affected, lamenting, that he is not prepared to do his duty. Therefore in the next verse He begins that asocyan anvasocas tvam prajna-vadams ca bhasase: [Bg. 2.11] "My dear Arjuna, you are My friend. Never mind, maya is very strong. Despite your being My friend, personal, you are so much overwhelmed with false compassion. So just hear Me." Therefore He said, asocyan: "You are lamenting on a subject matter which is not at all good." Asocya. Socya means lamentation, and asocya means one should not lament. Asocya. So asocyan anvasocas tvam prajna-vadams ca bhasase. "But you are talking like very learned scholar." Because he has talked. But those things are right. What Arjuna has said, that varna-sankara, when the women become polluted, the population is varna-sankara, that is fact. Whatever Arjuna has said to Krsna in order to avoid the fighting, so those things are correct. But from the spiritual platform, those things may be correct or incorrect, but from spiritual platform, they are not to be considered very serious. Therefore asocyan anvasocas tvam. Because his lamentation was on the bodily concept of life. That bodily concept of life, in the very beginning of Krsna's instructions, it is condemned. Asocyan anvasocas tvam: [Bg. 2.11] "You are lamenting on the bodily concept of life." Because anyone who is in the bodily concept of life, he is no better than animal. So our all morality, all social status, all politics, all philosophy, everything is on this bodily concept of life. We want to enjoy senses. Senses means different parts of the body. So one who is interested with the body -- that means one who is interested with the senses -- their only business is how to... (end)

Pradyumna: Translation: "When the time of death arrived for the foolish Ajamila, he began thinking exclusively of his son, Narayana." [SB 6.1.27]

Prabhupada: So in the previous verse also it has been described, bhojayan payayan mudho, and here is also, sa evam vartamano ajna. Ajna means one who has no sufficient knowledge. He is called ajna. And mudha means ass, rascal. So in both the verses the Ajamila is described as fool, rascal, and without sufficient knowledge. Why? Because he's attached to the child and he does not know that death is coming now. Death is there. This is our position. We say that "God is dead." God is not dead. God is coming very soon. Wait a few years, he'll be dead. This is the position. You rascal, God is not dead. God is coming to kick you, to kill you. Yes. Krsna says, mrtyuh sarva-haras caham [Bg. 10.34]. What is death? Just like in your previous life you had been something. Death means you have forgotten everything. Suppose I was a very big king or prime minister or president. But that is all finished. Now I've got another life, another chapter of life. Tatha dehantara-prapti. You have to change your body. It may be lower degree or higher degree, but you have to change your body. There are 8,400,000 species of life, forms of life. You have to accept one of them. That is our real problem. If we forget the real problem and blindly or foolishly say that "God is dead..." God may be dead, but God's law is not dead. Suppose a king dies, a president dies; does it mean the government dies? Huh? The government will go on. You can say, "God is dead." God is not dead, neither you are dead. But if you foolishly say that God is dead, that does not mean His law is also dead. The law will go on. One king may be dead. The next, his son or somebody will become king, and the government law will go on. So what is the use of talking foolishly like "God is dead"? God is never dead. This is going on. This morning we're talking.

So we are concerned with the laws of God. God may be dead or alive -- it doesn't matter. Suppose by law we are prisoners, we are in the prison house, and all of a sudden the president or the king dies. Does it mean you shall be free? No. You have to rot. Just like Bengali proverb says (Bengali), that if the king dies, his government is not stopped. We should remember that, that that government is prakrti, the material nature. Prakrteh kriyamanani gunaih karmani sarvasah [Bg. 3.27]. You are reading Bhagavad-gita. So this is all foolish things, that "God is dead," "I don't care for God." But God, actually, God is not dead. You are dead. You are dead actually because this body, the bodily concept of life, this body is dead. Just like you are driving one car. But if you think that "I'm the car..." The car is dead. The car is moving because you are alive. Similarly, this dead body, this body is dead, already dead from the very beginning, but it is moving on account of the soul. This is knowledge. It is dead from the very beginning. Therefore in the sastra it is said that... What is that? I am just now forgetting. Oh, apranasya hi dehasya mandanam loka-ranjanam. Apranasya hi dehasya. Deha, deha means this body. So either it is dead or alive, it has no life. Apranasya hi dehasya. Deha, he is not alive. It is always dead. Simply we understand, because we are foolish rascals, we understand that this body is dead when the soul is away. The body is always dead. So bhagavad-bhakti-vihinasya jatih japas tapah kriyah. If one is not Krsna conscious, bhagavata-bhakti-vihinasya, then his big nationality, jatih, his achievement, japas tapah, his activities, everything bhagavad-bhakti-vihinasya jatih japas tapah kriyah, all these things are like decoration of the dead body. Apranasya hi dehasya mandanam loka-ranjanam. Mandanam loka-ranjanam. We are decorating this body with flower, ornaments, nice cloth. How long? So long the life is there. Then it is beautiful. Otherwise no one will do. If you garland... Suppose I become dead and you garland. It may be pleasing to somebody, but what is the value? There is no value.

So this material civilization, they're decorating this body. So the bodily concept of life is condemned in the very beginning of the Bhagavad-gita. This knowledge was given to Arjuna by Krsna when he surrendered. When he was talking friendly, He did not say. When Krsna..., Arjuna submitted that "Krsna, I'm now perplexed. So how my intelligence can be revived? You know." Arjuna knew that Krsna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, so his perplexed position can be solved by Krsna. That he knew. Therefore he said, sisyas te 'ham sadhi mam prapannam: [Bg. 2.7] "Krsna, no more friendly talks. We are wasting time. Now I become Your disciple, sisya." Sisya means disciple. "You kindly advise me. I'm surrendering unto You." Tad viddhi pranipatena [Bg. 4.34]. Spiritual master means you must surrender to him. If you talk foolish, then you will not be benefited. You must submissively hear and accept whatever he says. So when Krsna began to teach him as teacher, the first thing He uttered... Anyone can say what He first said?

    Devotee: Asocyan anvasocas tvam.

    Prabhupada: Ah.

    asocyan anvasocas tvam
    prajna-vadams ca bhasase
    gatasun agatasums ca
    nanusocanti panditah
     [Bg. 2.11]

"My dear Arjuna, you are talking like very learned scholar, but you are so rascal that you are talking of this body."

So, so far this body's concerned, either it is dead or alive, it is not the subject matter of any talk. Nanusocanti panditah. Those who are learned scholars don't talk about the body. They'll talk about the soul. That is pandita. What is the... This is dead body. Suppose this is cloth. Uh? Now if you talk about this cloth, you can talk. You can write volumes of books: "This silk was purchased in that store and it was manufactured in such and such day, and the man manufactured, he's like this..." You can go on talking nonsense like that and can write books. So all these rascal philosophers, they are writing about this cloth. That's all. Yasyatma-buddhih kunape tri-dhatuke [SB 10.84.13]. But this is not the subject matter for the learned scholars. Nanusocanti panditah. What is this body? A combination of matter. It is already dead. Because the living soul is there, it is moving, and as soon as the living bo..., soul is out of the body, it is useless, dead matter. So what is there important talking about this dead body? It is made of this earth, earthly ingredient, bhumir apo 'nalo, and it will become again. Either... There are three, how do you say, transformation of this body. One transformation is ash. Another transformation is stool. Another transformation is earth. There are three different types of transformations. Just like Christian people, they bury the body. So, in due course of time you'll find, say, after ten years, twenty, your body's finished. It is now earth. The body has become earth. And Hindus, they burn it, so the body becomes ash. And the Parsees, they throw the body to be eaten by the vultures. It becomes stool. That is the last, how would you say, transformation of this body. And we are so much busy about this ash, stool, and earth. Just see how foolish we are.

Therefore Krsna said to Arjuna, gatasun agatasums ca. Just like motorcar, with driver or no driver, what is it? It is dead matter. That's all. Why one should be busy about this motorcar? One should be busy about the driver, whether he's (indistinct) nicely, whether he's eating nicely, he'll drive. If you don't take care of the driver, simply you wash the car, what is the use? The car will not be moving without driver. Similarly, the whole civilization should be on the basis of understanding the soul. That is civilization. Unfortunately, by the spell of maya... Just like this Ajamila. He's committing sinful activities. He's now rogue, thief, cheater. He doesn't care for that. But he's taking care of the body of the child. He's thinking, "This child will save me when I'll be in danger." There is another verse in the Second Canto:

    dehapatya-kalatradisu
    atma-sainyesv asatsv api
    tesam pramatto nidhanam
    pasyann api na pasyati
     [SB 2.1.4]

Deha means this body. Apatya means children. Dehapatya. Kalatra means wife. Dehapatya kalatradisu atm-asainyesu. Here is struggle for existence, and you're thinking that "This my strong body and my nice children and my wife, they are my soldiers. Therefore I am saved." Everyone is thinking like that. "Now I am in a good family. I've got my family members very nice. I've got this strong body. Oh, what do I care, God is dead?" That's all.

So this is our misconception. We are thinking that this paraphernalia -- my country, my community, my countrymen or my family, my wife, my children and so many things, mine, mine, mine -- so I'm thinking that they will give me all protection. No. Therefore, in the Bhagavata it is said, dehapatya-kalatradisu asatsv api. He knows that "They will be finished. They cannot give protection to themselves. What protection they'll give to me?" This is knowledge. This is knowledge. Dehapatya-kalatradisu atma-sainyesv asatsv api pramatta tesam nidhanam [SB 2.1.4]. He knows that they will be finished, pasyann api na pasyati. He has practical experience, yet still he does not see. This is called maya. Maya means thing is one and he's thinking otherwise. His soldier, the so-called soldier, the protector, will be finished, but still he's depending on him. Suppose a bird is flying with his family in the sky. But if there is some danger, then no other bird can help him. You have to help yourself. Just like aeroplane. If dozens of aeroplane is flying, but if one aeroplane is in danger, no other plane can give him any help. It will fall down and crash. Finished.

So we have to take care of ourself. Daily, we are thinking, "My country, my community" -- they're all busy in this way -- "they'll save me." No. When death will come, nobody will save you. He'll remember that. You are challenging, "God is dead." When God will come and make you killed, nobody can save you. So we are so foolish for thinking that "God is dead, and I shall continue my life, and my wife, my children, my countrymen, my nation will save me." That is not possible.

    Thank you very much. (end)

Prabhupada: (devotees repeat) Om namo bhagavate vasudevaya. Om namo bhagavate vasudevaya. Srimad-Bhagavatam, Canto Six, Chapter, One, verse number 12.

    Pusta Krsna: Eleven?

    Prabhupada: Thirteen? Eh?

    Pusta Krsna: Eleven?

Prabhupada: Eleven. No, eleven I have discussed. Yes. You have got eleven there?

    Pusta Krsna: Yes.

    Hari-sauri: We did ten yesterday.

    Prabhupada: All right. (devotees repeat)

    sri-badarayanir uvaca
    karmana karma-nirharo
    na hy atyantika isyate
    avidvad-adhikaritvat
    prayascittam vimarsanam
     [SB 6.1.11]

[break]...and I have several times said that what is the use of? That is the same, hasti-snana. If he does not know how to keep the elephant, how to keep neat and clean, if he has no this knowledge, so repeatedly he'll take bath and throw dust.

So Bhagavata, Pariksit, Sukadeva Gosvami, the next step... Next step means to become cultured. First of all prayascitta: "You have done this wrong; you should be punished." But the punishment will not rectify him. And that is practical. There are so many rules and regular punishment. In common cases... Just like every day the police is giving a ticket to the motor driver; still, the same thing is going on. So to keep oneself in darkness and makes rules and regulation will not help. Just like your government has admitted that they have spent millions of dollars, they could not stop the intoxication habit of LSD. That's a fact. But in our Krsna consciousness movement one who joins, he gives up immediately. That's a fact. What is the difference? The difference is that to stop one kind of karma by karma will not help. Therefore it is said, karmana karma-nirhara. One kind of activity is criminality, and one kind of activity just to punish him, this will not stop criminality. This is the real fact. He must be in knowledge. Cultivation of knowledge required. He must come to the senses, that "I am suffering. Every time I commit some criminality, I am punished. This is not very palatable. So why I cannot stop it?"

This is the beginning of human life, that unless you come to this knowledge... athato brahma jijnasa. This is called brahma-jijnasa. So that is possible in the human form of life. A dog cannot. A dog comes within your room, and you drive him away, you punish him, and still, with some plea he will come. So therefore Pariksit... Sukadeva Gosvami suggests that we have to make him free from the avidya, ignorance. That is Krsna consciousness movement. Everyone is under the spell of maya. Punah punah. Bhutva bhutva praliyate [Bg. 8.19]. It is going on, but we do not inquire that "Why I am repeatedly accepting the cycle of birth and death?" That is avidya. They are, rather, supporting, "Suppose if I become dog, what is the wrong there?" They say like that: "What is the wrong there?" So this means avidya, ignorance.

So for eradicating ignorance from life, it requires culture, cultivation. That is suggested in the next verse.

    nasnatah pathyam evannam
    vyadhayo abhibhavanti hi
    evam niyamakrd rajan
    sanaih ksemaya kalpate
     [SB 6.1.12]

Just like if you go to the physician and the physician is giving medicine and he's taking the medicine and cured, again he is affected with the disease, again going, so why it is happening? It is happening because he does not follow the rules and regulation given by the physician. Therefore it is happening. The physician... As soon as you go to a physician, you have to accept something "do not" and something "do." That is called regulative principle. Without regulative principle you cannot correct yourself. So that regulative principle cannot stay if you are not a devotee. This is the gradual process. Simply if I say, "Follow the rules and regulation," it will not stay unless you become a devotee. That is the test of devotional service, or Krsna consciousness. Because it is so powerful, devotional service, that as soon as you become a devotee, gradually, immediately, all the good qualities of your original position...

Good qualities means we are part and parcel of God, so God is good, so we are also good. Otherwise how can I be part and parcel of God? If God is gold, then I am gold. So why I become iron? I am not iron, but I am covered with dirty things. I look like iron. This is the position. Actually I am not iron; I am gold, because I am part and parcel of God. If God is good, then I am good. So because I am covered by the material dirty things, I look like not gold. So this is the test. As soon as you become God conscious, your original all good qualities will manifest automatically.

    yasyasti bhaktir bhagavaty akincana
    sarvair gunais tatra samasate surah
    harav abhaktasya kuto mahad-guna
    mano-rathenasati dhavato bahih
     [SB 5.18.12]

That "One who has got unflinching faith, devotion to the Lord," yasyasti bhaktir bhagavaty akincana, "without any motive, then all the good qualities of God will manifest in him very soon."

    ksipram bhavati dharmatma
    sasvac-chantim nigacchati
    kaunteya pratijanihi
    na me bhaktah pranasyati
     [Bg. 9.31]

    api cet su-duracaro
    bhajate mam ananya-bhak
    sadhur eva sa mantavyah...
     [Bg. 9.30]

These things are there. The devotional service is so nice. If you simply take to devotional service, then all good qualities will come. You don't have to educate him, to send some reformatory school or this or that. That will be explained. In devotional service, Krsna consciousness is so nice. If you simply take to Krsna consciousness, then all your... Because originally you are good. You have become bad on account of the material association. Therefore devotion means to be purified. This is a purificatory process from material contamination. Sarvopadhi vinirmuktam tat paratvena nirmalam [Cc. Madhya 19.170]. If you think... Vimarsanam. If we think little soberly, that "I am thinking I am American or Indian. Am I American or Indian? This is upadhi, designation. By accident or somehow or other, I have got this body in America. Therefore I am American. But next time I may not take the American body. I may take another, Chinese body or something else." So one has to understand that "I am neither American, neither Chinese, nor Indian, nor white, nor black." Aham brahmasmi: "I am spirit soul, part and parcel of God." That is knowledge. We have to come to that. That is brahma-bhutah.

    brahma-bhutah prasannatma
    na socati na kanksati
    samah sarvesu bhutesu
    mad-bhaktim labhate param
     [Bg. 18.54]

So this Krsna consciousness movement is to purify the designation. And so long we are in the darkness of this designation, that "I am this," "I am that," "I am this," "I am that," that is ignorance. Suppose a thief -- he is thinking that "If I do not steal, I cannot exist. I'll die. So I cannot stop stealing. I must go on." So this is ignorance. But if he thinks over that "The cats and dogs and the birds and beasts, they are very nicely eating. They are not stealing anyone's... Whatever he gets by the grace of God, he is happy," this is knowledge. Vimarsanam. Vimarsanam. Isavasyam idam sarvam [Iso mantra 1]. Everything God's property. And we are all part and parcel, sons of God, so the property is for us. It is not for others. Just like father's property is meant for the son's enjoyment. That's a fact. So "If other sons, without any labor, without any endeavor, they can get their food, why I am stealing?" This is knowledge. This is knowledge. "Why I shall steal? There is enough food." But because I haven't got this knowledge that "God is the proprietor. I am His part and parcel, son. So if He has provided food for the elephant, who eats at a time forty kilos, he can eat, and I eat only, say, half a pound, I cannot eat?" This is knowledge. "Why shall I steal? I shall depend on God." This is knowledge. So this is Krsna consciousness. I am part and parcel of Krsna. I am God's part... Why shall I starve? There are so many... Out of 8,400,000 forms of life, eight million forms of life are less than the human being. Human being, only 400,000. Out of that, civilized men very few. Out of that, Americans are very few, Indians are very few. So "If so many, 8,300,000 forms of life, they can get without stealing, why shall I steal?" This is knowledge. Prayascitta vimarsanam. As soon as he becomes in quite perfect knowledge, then whole problem solved.

So this is the instruction of Srimad-Bhagavatam. If we take seriously, then there is no problem. Otherwise the problems will go on, and the so-called rascal scientists will give up bluff that "We are making solution of all problem." It is never solved. It will never be solved in the future also, unless we take to Krsna consciousness. That is a fact. If you like, you can take it; otherwise suffer.

    Thank you very much. (end)

"Devotional And Demonic Desire"  BY SRILA PRABHUPADA.

Nitai: "The demoniac person thinks: ‘So much wealth do I have today, and I will gain more according to my schemes. So much is mine now, and it will increase in the future more and more. He is my enemy and I have killed him and my other enemy will also be killed. I am the lord of everything, I am the enjoyer. I am perfect, powerful and happy. I am the richest man, surrounded by aristocratic relatives. There is none so powerful and happy as I am. I shall perform sacrifices, I shall give charity and thus I shall I rejoice.' In this way such persons are deluded by ignorance."

    Prabhupada:

    idam adya maya labdham
    imam prapsye manoratham
    idam astidam api me
    bhavisyati punar dhanam

    asau maya hatah satrur
    hanisye caparan api
    isvaro 'ham aham bhogi
    siddho 'ham balavan sukhi

    adhyo 'bhijanavan asmi
    ko 'nyo 'sti sadrso maya
    yaksye dasyami modisya
    ity ajnana-vimohitah

So last night we discussed about the demons' thinking. Asa-pasa-satair baddhah. He does not know "So long I shall be aspiring more and more, I am getting entangled more and more within this material world. Because Krsna is so kind, he has given me freedom to enjoy this material world, but according to my work, I am becoming implicated. So long I'll have a pinch of desire for enjoying this material world, I'll have to accept a typical body." This is the law of nature. When you'll actually be free from all material desires, then it is called mukti, mukti, liberation. That is liberation. So that standard of mukti, mukti standard or mukti platform, is bhakti-yoga.

"No desire" does not mean no desire for serving Krsna. That is real desire. Other desires are artificial. That is material. But the desire to... That is called Krsna consciousness. When all our desires are for serving Krsna... Desires you cannot give up. That is not possible. Desires will remain there, but at the present moment, in the conditional stage, the desires are being misused. That is the defect. Therefore the definition of bhakti means anyabhilasita-sunyam [BRS 1.1.11]. Sunya means zero. That is called nirvana. The Buddha philosophy advocates nirvana, no more desire. That is their philosophy. "By desire, you are becoming implicated, so make all your desires extinct. Then there will be no more feelings of pains and pleasure. Desirelessness."

But that is not possible. Desire must be there. Because I am living there, living being, I must have desires. That is the symptom. A stone has no desire, but a living being, however small, insignificant ant, it has got desire. The insignificant ant gets information that in the other corner of the room, which is one hundred miles for the ant... Because the world is relative, relative world, so this length of the room, from this corner to the other corner, for an ant it is hundred miles, yes, because the world is relative according to the size, atomic size, the distance. Now we have got speedy aeroplane. The distance has reduced. Distance from Honolulu to India, if you go by land it will be ten thousand miles, but... It is ten thousand miles, but the speedy aeroplane has reduced. So relatively... Everything is relative. This is called relative world. Dar... What is...? Professor Einstein, he has proved the law of relativity. So the ant, he has to go, to pick up one grain of sugar, by going hundred miles in his capacity, but it will go. That is desire. You have got experience. You put little sugar here. You don't invite ants, but they'll come. They'll come. They'll get immediately information. Just like from Europe many people came in America -- gold rush desire. So desire must be there. The ant has desire; Lord Brahma has desire; I have got desire; you have got desire. This is artificial, to make desireless. That is not possible.

Therefore bhakti means to purify the desire. That is bhakti. Anyabhilasita-sunyam.

    anyabhilasita-sunyam
    jnana-karmady-anavrtam
    anukulyena krsnanu-
    silanam bhaktir uttama
     [BRS 1.1.11]

Tat-paratvena nirmalam. Sarvopadhi-vinirmuktam [Cc. Madhya 19.170]. I am desiring now with upadhi, designation. I am Indian; I am desiring in a way. You are American; you are desiring in another way. Similarly, cat is desiring another way. The dog is desiring another way. Everyone has got desires, different types of desire. Child is desiring some way or other. The boy is desiring another way. So the desire is on account of this body, different desire. So when we become transcendental to the bodily concept of life, then we come to the spiritual platform. In that platform the only one desire is how to serve Krsna. That is required, not to become desireless but to purify the desire. That is bhakti.

Sarvopadhi-vinirmuktam tat-paratvena nirmalam [Cc. Madhya 19.170]. Nirmala means without any dirt, cleansed completely, crystal clear. That is required. The senses will be there, the mind will be there, the intelligence will be there, I'll be there -- everything will be there, but we have to cleanse the desire, purify the desires. Asa-pasa-satair baddhah. Here, the demons, they're also desiring, but baddhah: they are becoming conditioned. But a devotee, he's also desiring, but he's mukta, means liberated. Therefore in the Bhagavad-gita it is said, yajnarthe karmano 'nyatra, karma-bandhanah: "You work for performing sacrifice, performing sacrifice." Sacrifice, yajna... Yajna means to satisfy the Supreme. That is sacrifice. I sacrifice my own convenience. I take all kinds of troubles... There is no trouble. It is pleasure, just like the mother takes all kinds of trouble for the little child, but she does not think that is trouble. That is pleasure. When you do something out of love, that is pleasure. That is not trouble. So in the transcendental platform, devotional service, anything you do, that is pleasure. That is not trouble. Just like you are dancing here. Actually, bodily, there is some trouble because you are perspiring, but you are not feeling the trouble; you are feeling pleasure. Otherwise how you can dance? This is the transcendental platform. So the demons are bound up by material desires, and the devotees -- apparently there is desire, but there is no bondage. This is the difference. There is no bondage. Sarvopadhi-vinirmuktam tat-paratvena nirmalam [Cc. Madhya 19.170].

So the Mayavadi philosophers, they cannot understand. They are thinking that "Why these people are taking so much trouble, dancing jumping?" They cannot under... Therefore they feel displeasure. They feel disturbance because they are not purified. So asa-pasa-satair baddhah. The demonic principle is to become bound up by their desires, but if you are on the spiritual platform, then all your desires means loving service to the Lord. That is wanted. So the demons' desires is described here. There is nothing to be explained. We have got practical experience in the material world. They are always thinking, idam adya maya labdham: "Now, today I have earned five hundred dollars" or something more or less. Maya labdham means "I have got it." Imam prapsye manoratham: "Again I shall get tomorrow so much money, and my bank balance will increase to such and such strength." Idam asti: "I got so much, and so much will be added, and the balance will increase." Idam me bhavisyati punar dhanam: "In this way I will increase the amount of my wealth more and more."

There is no question of "how much love I have increased for Krsna." That is bhakta, bhakti. But where there is no bhakti, they are thinking of this material increase. Asau maya hatah, thinking others are enemy... Actually, in the higher status of life, a devotee does not think anyone as enemy. Samah sarvesu bhutesu mad-bhaktim labhate param [Bg. 18.54]. Samah. He knows that "Nobody can become my enemy unless Krsna desires. So why shall I think of him as my enemy? Krsna has desired him to act as my enemy just to correct me, just to make me more advanced in spiritual life. So why shall I take any action upon him as enemy?" Of course, this stage is meant for very highly elevated devotee. That is not meant for ordinary devotee. But the fact is this: "How one can become my enemy? If I am Krsna's servant, how one can become my enemy? If one is acting as my enemy, it is Krsna's desire. I have got some defect, and he is correcting me." Therefore it is called samah sarvesu bhutesu mad-bhaktim labhate param [Bg. 18.54]. That is the topmost devotee's conception.

But when we are preaching, we have to come to the second stage. There are three stages of devotional life. The first stage, or the lower stage, the middle stage, and the top stage. So this kind of conception, that "Nobody is my enemy," that is on the topmost stage. That is not to be imitated. When you are preaching, you have to come to the middle stage. Even if you are on the top stage, you have to come on the middle stage because you have to discriminate: "Here is a devotee; here is a demon." On the top stage there is no such thing as demon and devotee. The top stage, the devotee sees: "Everyone is engaged in Krsna's service. Simply I am not engaged." This is topmost devotee's vision, that "I am lacking Krsna's devotion."

Just like Radharani thinks that "All others, they are engaged in Krsna's devotion, but I could not." Caitanya Mahaprabhu said. Caitanya Mahaprabhu said that "I have not a pinch of devotion to Krsna. Then if you say, ‘Why you are crying?' that is to make a show." Caitanya Mahaprabhu said that "I am crying for Krsna just to advertise Myself that I have become a big... But actually I have not a pinch of devotion to Krsna." "No you are so great devotee. Everyone says." "No. Everyone may say, but I am not." "Why you are not?" "Now, because without Krsna, still I am living. That is the proof that I have no love for Krsna." This is Caitanya Mahaprabhu's statement. "If I had any drop of love for Krsna, how I could live so long without Krsna?" Sunyayitam jagat sarvam govinda-virahena me. So this is love of Krsna, that "How can I live?" -- separation from Krsna. This is Caitanya Mahaprabhu's philosophy. And the Gosvamis followed them. They never said that "Now I have seen Krsna." Never said. The Gosvamis... Caitanya Mahaprabhu also said that "I was dreaming Krsna. Why you got Me awakened? I lost the chance." But the Gosvamis, they said that

he radhe vraja-devike ca lalite he nanda-suno kutah
    sri-govardhana-kalpa-padapa-tale kalindi-vane kutah
ghosantav iti sarvato vraja-pure khedair maha-vihvalau
    vande rupa-sanatanau raghu-yugau sri-jiva-gopalakau

They were simply feeling separation. In Vrndavana they lived, but they never said, "Last night I saw Krsna was dancing." Never said. They said that "Krsna and gopis, Radharani, where you are all?" He radhe vraja-devike ca lalite he nanda-suno kutah: "Where you are?" Kalindi-vane kutah govardhana-kalpa-padapa-tale: "Either on the..., near the Govardhana Hill or on the bank of the river Yamuna, where you are?" This is called bhajana, devotion in separation, feeling separation. So in this way we shall increase our aspiration more and more. That is required. That asa, that hope, that expectation, will lead us to the topmost platform of devotion.

So instead of thinking always like this demon that "I have got so much money. Now I shall get further amount of money and it will be like so much money. He is my enemy. I have killed one of them. The other enemy..." This is going on actually, in the material field. So we have to rectify. We have to rectify. Adhyo 'bhijanavan asmi: "I am the richest man. I have got so many friends, all aristocratic." Abhijanavan. Janavan, dhanavan. Dhanavan means possessing wealth, and janavan means possessing men, strength, popular strength, and strength of money.

So Caitanya Mahaprabhu said that na dhanam na janam na kavitam va jagadisa kamaye. These are the bhakti path. The demon is thinking, "I have got so much money. I have got so many friends, and so many relatives, so many family members." Caitanya Mahaprabhu is denying that na dhanam na janam na sundarim kavitam va jagadisa kamaye, just the opposite: "I don't want any material friends or followers, neither I want money. Simply I want to serve You. Simply I want to serve You." So in these three verses everything is... Word meanings are there. So these are the demonic propensities, and the very thing can be changed into devotional service, and then we become devotee or demigod. So I am going tomorrow. So here you shall try to become devotee, not to think like demons. That will not help us. Then asa-pasa-satair baddhah. We'll remain bound up in material bondage. You cannot stop desires. That is not possible, but purify the desire. Purify the desire. Purify desire means that the same hopes, hope against hope, just to improve your position as devotee... That will help you to make your life successful. Thank you very much. (end)

    "Anxiety Unlimitted"  BY SRILA PRABHUPADA.

Nitai: "They believe that to gratify the senses unto the end of life is the prime necessity of human civilization. Thus there is no end to their anxiety. Being bound by hundreds and thousands of desires, by lust and anger, they secure money by illegal means for sense gratification."

    Prabhupada:

    cintam aparimeyam ca
    pralayantam upasritah
    kamopabhoga-parama
    etavad iti niscitah

    asa-pasa-satair baddhah
    kama-krodha-parayanah
    ihante kama-bhogartham
    anyayenartha-sancayan

So sometimes people say, the modern age... Modern age and past time or future, past, present and future, the real principles of life, they are the same. It does not change. Millions of years ago, the past and present and future as they were, at the present moment also, the same past present and future are there. So there is no question of modern age or past age, the nature's law is the same. Millions of years ago the sun was rising early in the morning, and it is rising early in the morning at present moment. There is no change. Millions of years ago all living entities were interested in eating, sleeping, mating and defending; the same thing is going on. There is no change.

So Krsna spoke all these words five thousand years ago. Apart from taking account of millions of years, because nature's law is the same, so even in those days, five thousand years ago, you'll find the demonic people as they are now. These words about the demons... There were demons like Ravana and Hiranyakasipu, Kamsa. So many demons there were, historical demons. But their process of life was the same as the modern demons. There is no change. Therefore sastra means it is for all the time, not that sastra was meant in the past for something else, and now something else. That is not the fact. That is, means, sastra, that it does not change. The time, place and atmosphere, according to that, everything is the same.

Now, formerly... It is said, anyayenartha-sancayan, to secure money by black market, anyayena. Nyaya means legal and anyaya means illegal. So anyayenartha-sancayan, the practice was there also at that time. It may be small scale, but the same thing is going on at the present moment which is known as black market. Black market means anyayenartha-sancayan, getting money by unfair means. That is called anyayena artha-sancayan. Anyaya means illegal; nyaya means legal. So these demons who are very much eager to accumulate money by black market, they are cintam aparimeyam, immeasurable anxiety. Anything you do in the material world, there will be cinta, anxiety.

Just like in our, this Krsna consciousness movement, the movement, all the activities, they are not material. They're all spiritual. But still, because it is being enacted in the material world, we have also so much anxiety because we are in the material world, although that anxiety also bhakti. That is nothing else. That is not material. When we are anxious how to protect a property, how to push on this movement, how people will take it, what line of action we shall take, this is also anxiety, but that anxiety is for Krsna. Therefore it is bhakti. Anxiety...

Even in Vrndavana there is anxiety. Radharani is in anxiety that "Krsna is not here. How Krsna will come?" The gopis are also in anxiety. Gopis are so in anxiety that about them it is said that when Krsna used to go to the forest for tending the cows, so gopis were thinking at home that "Krsna's feet is so soft that we hesitate to take his feet on our breast, but He is now walking in the forest, and there were so many stones and pricks, and they are giving pain to the Krsna's lotus feet." And thinking like this, they fainted. This is gopi. Krsna is out of the village, and they are at home, and they are thinking of Krsna, and they fainted. This is also anxiety, so much anxiety they fainted, but that is for Krsna.

Therefore gopis are exalted. Ramya kecid upasana vraja-vadhu-varga virya kalpita. Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu He recommends, "There is no better type of worshiping Krsna than it was planned by the gopis." So there is also anxiety. So anxiety is spiritual anxiety and material anxiety. Spiritual anxiety means you are advancing in spiritual life, and material anxiety means you are going downhill. So cintam aparimeyam ca.

But we are speaking of the demons, materialistic persons. Demon means materialistic person, who are simply busy for these temporary bodily comforts. They do not know anything else. The body is material. Therefore all these activities for comforts of the body... That is demon, more or less. So cinta... the demons, they are anxiety. Everyone has anxiety, but their anxiety, aparimeyam. Just like ordinary man he has got some anxiety: "How to maintain my family? How to get some money to maintain family?" like that. But the demons, they are unmeasurable, unlimited. You'll find big, big businessmen. They have got very, very long project, "How to do this? How to do this? How to increase this factory? How to make it world-renowned?" and so on, so on, so on. There is no limit of anxiety. Cintam aparimeyam ca. Unlimited means they have no idea of future life, they do not believe, mostly, at the present moment. Formerly they used to believe, even these asuras.

Kamsa was a great asura, but still, he was thinking of future life. When he was informed that his sister's son, eighth son, will kill him, so he was trying to kill his sister. "Because sister is the source of the nephew coming, so better finish the sister." So still he was thinking, "What people will say? I shall kill my sister." So they were also thinking of future. But at the present moment the asuras are so advanced that they don't think of future life also. Don't think. Therefore pralayantam. Pralayantam means annihilation. Sada tad-bhava-bhavitah [Bg. 8.6]. The result is at the same time... Because at the time of death, yam yam bhavam smaran loke tyajaty ante kalevaram. Pralayantam means at the time of death, when we give up this body. Upasritah. Then we get a similar body next life. That is, I mean to say, arranged by the nature's law. Nature has nothing to do. It will automatically follow.

Just like you infect some disease, nature's law is that you must suffer from that disease. Nobody has got to do anything. The law is so... Nature's law is like that. If you take more food than you can digest... (aside:) (child crying) Where is that child? Then immediately there will be dysentery. This is nature's law. If you take more than you can digest, then immediately there will be indigestion, means you cannot assimilate so much food. That is nature's law. If you touch fire, either you touch or your innocent child touch, the fire will burn it. Fire will not consider that "Here is a child. Let me excuse." No, it will burn. This is nature's law. Similarly, the thoughts which you are maintaining during your lifetime, if that thought becomes prominent -- naturally it becomes -- at the time of death, then you are going to get a similar body. If you are thinking like a demon, then you get the demon's body next life. And if you are thinking like a devotee, then you get your next life back to home, back to Godhead. This is nature's law.

Therefore, if you practice instead of thinking like the demons, how to gratify senses... That is the demonic thought. They are concerned with this body. If you think of Krsna, how to serve Him, that is your perfection of life. Because you'll think at the time of death of Krsna. Ante narayana-smrtih. That is the perfection of life. Ante, at the time of death, if you remember Krsna, then your life is successful. Tyaktva deham punar janma naiti mam eti kaunteya [Bg. 4.9]. So we have to do like that, not like the asuras or demons. Thinking must be there, but if you think of this body -- how to keep it very comfortably, how to enjoy senses, how to have more money, how to have more men or women, how to see naked dance, how to do, how to this, how to this -- then you are demon. And at the time of death, naturally we shall think of. Then I get again demonic life or animal life or tree life.

There are so many different forms of life. That is in our presence. Before us there are so many examples. If you get a life of a tree, naked... Tree is naked. He's not ashamed to remain naked. And for ten thousand years you stand up. Wherefrom this life comes? It requires thought. Why the world is not full of one kind of forms of life? Why there are different types of life? Because different desires and nature's law. Nature's law, there is no excuse, the same thing, that if a child even touches fire, nature is not very merciful. It will burn. Similarly, at the time of death we have to think very rightly. That is required. That is human life. You have to train yourself in such a way that at the time of death you think of Krsna.

Therefore Krsna advises, man-mana bhava mad-bhakto mad-yaji mam namaskuru [Bg. 18.65], mam evaisyasi asamsayam. Asamsayam, without any doubt. If you want to go back to home, back to Godhead, which is known as Krsnaloka, Vaikunthaloka... Vaikunthaloka means... Kuntha means this anxiety, and vaikuntha... Vigata-kuntha. Vigata means without. There is no more any anxiety. That is Vaikunthaloka, spiritual world. Material world is kuntha. Kuntha means anxiety, full of anxiety, and Vaikuntha means there is no anxiety. Everything is freedom. Sac-cid-ananda. Vaikuntha life means sac-cid-ananda. Krsna's body is sac-cid-ananda-vigrahah [Bs. 5.1]. Not only Krsna's body, anyone who lives in the spiritual world, his body is spiritual body, and spiritual body means sac, cit, ananda. Sat means eternal. Spiritual body never annihilates. The material body annihilates. Every one of us, we have got now material body. It will annihilate. But in the spiritual world, when you have got spiritual body, it does not annihilate. Eternal. Eternal life. And cit means knowledge. So in this material body we have no knowledge. Even if we have got..., now imperfect knowledge, limited knowledge. But in the spiritual life you have got full knowledge. That is spiritual life. And ananda.

Here is no ananda. In this material world... Ananda means pleasure, bliss, but here it is not possible. First of all, you have to die. You may manufacture some so-called ananda, but you'll die. Now, suppose we are dancing here, and if we understand that immediately death will take place, then we shall not be able to enjoy the dancing. Immediately the anxiety will come. So here, ananda, there is no ananda. Why there is ananda? This body is subjected to so many miserable condition of life. We become hungry, we become thirsty, there is death, there is fearfulness, there is enemy -- so many things. If you study analytically that this body is simply meant for suffering, so where is ananda? There is no ananda; there is no complete knowledge; there is no eternity. Therefore it is called material. Just the opposite is spiritual life, just opposite. There is no death. Eternity. So civilization means that, the process by which we can transfer ourself from this nonpermanent life to permanent life, life of ignorance to life of knowledge, life of suffering to life of enjoyment. That is spiritual life.

So everyone, every human being, should be intelligent that "This is my position, so what is the use of living like a demon? Here is Krsna. He says that ‘You just become My devotee. You just think of Me.' " Man-mana bhava mad-bhaktah. "Always think of Me," man-manah, and mad-bhaktah, "My devotee," mad-yaji, "worship Me," mam namaskuru, "offer obeisances unto Me. If you follow this principle, then," mam evaisyasi, "you come to Me." So why not sacrifice one life for Krsna consciousness? So far the bodily enjoyment, especially sex enjoyment, we had in dog's life, cat's life, in beast life. So if by restricting this kind of sex life, little organized, if I can get back to home, back to Godhead and solve all the problems of life, is it not the decision of the intelligent man?

Why should I give me away to the animal life? Visayah khalu sarvatah syat. Visaya means the four necessities of material life. That is called visaya. Visaya, four nece... What are the four necessities? That so long we have got this material body, we have to eat. We cannot starve. That is not possible. So similarly, we have to take rest, sleeping, and similarly, we have to enjoy or give satisfaction to our senses, and similarly, we have to defend. This is called visaya. So sastra says that this..., visayah khalu sarvatah syat: "In any form of life you'll get full facilities for the bodily necessities of life, full facilities." Just see the birds and bees. They have no anxiety for maintaining the body or fulfilling the necessities of life. Early in the morning they are not anxious. They dawn and they chirp and they fly to somewhere, in any tree, and the fruit is there. A little fruit, that is sufficient. And that is eating. And sleeping? Any tree, they'll sit down on the top and sleep. So eating, sleeping... And mating? The other sex is born along with the bird. At least two eggs are there, one male, one female. So he has no anxiety for sex, he has no anxiety for eating, he has no anxiety for sleeping, and defense everyone knows. All birds, beast, knows how to defend himself. The bird's on the ground, eating something, as soon as it sees some danger, immediately go up. That is his defense.

So sastra says, therefore, that "These four necessities of life, you'll get, any form of life. Any insignificant form or very important form, it doesn't matter. You'll get all... This is arranged." You have no anxiety for that. Krsna has given you. Just like even if you are put into the jail life, prison life, for these things government has arranged already. In the jail life there is eating, sleeping, arrangement. So for these things we should not be very much anxious. That is human life. Simply he has to see intelligently, things, how things are going on.

There are 8,400,000 forms of life. Out of that, the human forms in different status, 400,000. And eight millions, they are lower animals -- birds, beast, aquatics, insects, serpents, so many. They're eight millions. The number of... You can see the number of human being. The other beings... Just like even a small ant. From your room thousands of small ants will come out. But in that room, as a human being, you cannot live more than two, three. That is the nature's way. You'll find so many sparrows, so many other birds, beast, even elephants. So they are getting their food, they are getting their sleeping accommodation, they have facility for sex life and they know how to defend.

So human life is also meant for like that, simply for eating, sleeping, mating and defending? But the modern civilization has gone down so low that they are very much anxious. Therefore it is said, cintam aparimeyam ca -- "How to arrange for eating? How to arrange for sleeping? Not only for me, but for my son, for my grandson, for my great-grandson..." Cintam aparimeyam. Then why you are so much in anxiety? Who is your son? Who is your grandson or great-grandson? We... By chance, we have come together, and after death, like football, it will be shooted to somewhere we do not know. Who can say, "My father is there" or "My grandfather is there"? It is the example given: just like some straw. They mix together in the waves, and again by the waves they are thrown here and there, no more assembling. So the material life is that. Material life... By chance, we have come in a family or in a nation or in a community, but this will be... After some years, it will be broken, and everybody will be thrown in the laws of nature -- we do not know where -- according to his karma. Now I am father, he is son, but after death my son may become demigod; I may become a dog. Then where is my relationship? Everything is broken. And here I may keep the photo of my father, and father may be rotting somewhere as a dog.

You cannot avoid these laws of material nature. This is called maya. Actually we are busy with something which is not permanent, a temporary arrangement by the laws of nature. Therefore those who are too much full of anxiety for all these things, they are called demons. Cintam aparimeyam ca. Your cintam will not act. You may think for the safety or satisfaction, but that does not mean we should neglect our duty. But as far as possible, we should be detached. It is not that because all these are temporary arrangement, we should be unfaithful to our family members, to our children, to our wife. As duty, we should take care, but we should not be simply absorbed in such thoughts. Our other business is how to become fit for going back to home, back to Godhead. That is our real business. This is temporary business because we have got some bodily relation, so as duty...

Therefore Rupa Gosvami, the example, when he wanted to retire from family life, he gave 50% to Krsna. He was very rich man. After retirement he brought one full load of boat, golden coins. Just imagine the value. What is the price of gold coin now? I think there is no gold coin at the present moment. It is all finished. Now it is paper coins. (chuckles) This is going on. But even five hundred years ago or four hundred years ago there were gol... Not four hundred years ago, in our childhood, we have seen gold mohor, guinea. They were used in practical use. And silver coins, gold coins, we saw. But now it is, everything, paper. So we are so advanced that there is no more gold and silver.

So anyway, cintam aparimeyam ca, that should be transferred to krsna-cinta. Satatam kirtayanto mam yatantas ca drdha-vratah [Bg. 9.14]. If you always be busy in glorifying or chanting the holy name of the Lord, then your cinta, anxiety, is transferred. By same cinta... Cinta will go on; you cannot stop it. Mind you cannot stop thinking even for a moment. Either you shall think of this material life or you shall think of Krsna. So the Krsna consciousness means instead of thinking of this material life, you think of Krsna. Thinking is not to be stopped. That is not possible. You cannot stop thinking even for a moment. Simply you have to practice. Instead of thinking these material things, you think of Krsna. That is wanted.

That Krsna advises, man-mana bhava mad-bhakto mad-yaji mam. Man-manah... If you think of Krsna always, then naturally you become devotee of Krsna. Man-mana bhava mad-bhaktah. And mad-yaji, and if you actually become devotee of Krsna, then you shall worship Krsna. And if you actually worship Krsna, then you must offer obeisances to Krsna. Therefore Krsna advises four things, man-mana bhava mad-bhakto mad-yaji mam namaskuru [Bg. 18.65]. Then what will be the result? Mam evaisyasi. Simply by practicing these four things... It does not require any MA, PhD, degree. Simply you have to agree, "Yes, I shall think of Krsna, chant Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna." You have to agree. That's all. That is required. Then, gradually, you become bhakta. Gradually you worship, and gradually you offer obeisances, surrender.

That one, that is wanted by Krsna, sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja [Bg. 18.66]. So it does not require any high education, high birth, or great riches, or to become very beautiful. Nothing required. Beautiful or not beautiful, everyone can become Krsna conscious. There is no impediment. Educated or not educated, it doesn't matter. Rich or poor, it doesn't matter. Ahaituky apratihata. The devotional service, bhakti-yoga, is without any cause and without impediment. Ahaituky apratihata. And if we attain that stage, then yayatma suprasidati: then atma, the soul, will be fully satisfied. So it does not require much education, much wealth. From any status of life one can practice this, man-mana bhava mad-bhakto mad-yaji mam namaskuru [Bg. 18.65], these four things only.

So we who are propaganding, making propaganda for this Krsna consciousness movement... It is not very difficult. And it is not meant for any particular class of men or community or country. It is meant for all living entities, if he can. And where is the difficulty? So it may be difficult in other forms of life, but in the human form of life it is not at all difficult. So we should fully utilize this human form of life in Krsna consciousness, and the process is always thinking of Krsna. Instead of thinking women and money, if we... That is much more difficult also. The maya is so strong that as soon as I am sitting in a solitary place, then I'll think of money and women. Therefore we should live always in assembly and chant Hare Krsna and save ourself from the danger of material falldown. Thank you very much. (end)

"The Demonic Attitude"  BY SRILA PRABHUPADA.

Nitai: "The demoniac, taking shelter of insatiable lust, pride and false prestige, and being thus illusioned, are always sworn to unclean work, attracted by the impermanent."

    Prabhupada:

    kamam asritya duspuram
    dambha-mana-madanvitah
    mohad grhitvasad-grahan
    pravartante 'suci-vratah

So the demons... We have explained who are demons and who are divine, or demigods. Demigods means those who are devotee of the Lord. Visnu-bhakto bhaved daivah. Visnu-bhakta, the all-pervasive Supreme Personality of Godhead and His devotee... The Godhead is called deva, and his devotees are called daiva. So we are discussing about the characteristics of the demons. So they have lost their intelligence. Etam drstim avastabhya nastatmanah alpa-buddhayah. Nastatmanah. Atmanah means spirit soul. So they have lost the sense of spirit soul. They do not know that "I am not this body, I am spirit soul. Aham brahmasmi." So therefore they do not know this. Therefore they are called nastatmanah. They have lost their spiritual sense. Why? Alpa-buddhayah, not very intelligent.

We have discussed very elaborately. Anyone who has got intelligence, he can understand that "I am not this body. Within this body there is a living force, and without that living force the body is useless, lump of matter. That's all. So long the spirit soul is there, I am Mr. such and such, I am Mr. this, I am Mr. that." (child coughing) (aside:) So this child should be... But as soon as the spirit soul is away, that Mr. lying on the floor, if somebody kicks on his face, he does not protest. "Mr." finished. But the fools still take care of that bodily "Mr," not the soul "Mr." Without the soul, it is nothing but a lump of matter.

Just like in your country I have seen the machine. In the beginning, when I came to your country, I saw some typewriter machine is throw in the garbage. Of course, in India they do not throw. They repair it. But here your repairing cost is very, very high. Therefore you throw away. So the machine which is costly, but as it does not work, you throw away -- it has no value -- similarly, this is also machine. This body is also machine. That is described in the Bhagavad-gita, yantrarudhani mayaya. It is a machine given by maya, the material energy. Asat. Just like the aeroplane is also a machine. It has no life. But life is the pilot. So long the pilot is there, the machine is useful. If there is no pilot, it may stand in the airport for millions of years; it will not fly. Very practical.

Still, they are very much proud of this body. Why? Alpa-buddhayah, it is said, "less intelligent." Less intelligent. So why he has become less intelligent? That is described in this verse, kamam asritya. His basic principle of life is lusty desire, asritya. He has taken shelter of principally the lusty desire, kamam asritya. Our constitutional position is we have to take shelter of somebody. Just like the dog. The dog, if he has no shelter, a good master, he has no position. Street dog. They say, "street dog." He has no food. He has no shelter. He is lean and thin and do not know where to go, in this way. So the constitutional position of the dog is that it must have a good master. Then he is happy. Then he's happy. Otherwise it is not happy. Is it not? Otherwise it is street dog. Sometimes it is killed by the municipality.

Similarly, our position is dog. We must understand it. We cannot live independently. It is not possible. Every living being. Therefore, in the Vedic injunction is nityo nityanam cetanas cetananam eko yo bahunam vidadhati kaman. God and the living entities, they're... Both of them are living entities, being. But what is the difference between God and living entities? The living entities are maintained by God, and God is the maintainer. That is the difference. Eko yo bahunam vidadhati kaman. We cannot maintain ourself. God maintains. Therefore, according to the Christian principle, they go to the church to beg bread from God.

Actually that is the fact. That is the fact. We are not independent. We are dependent on God in so many things. God has engaged the servant, the sun-god. He's also demigod. He is working under the order of the Supreme Lord. Yasyajnaya bhramati sambhrta-kala-cakrah. In the Vedic literature we get information of the sun-god on the sun planet. Yac-caksur esa savita sakala-grahanam. The sun-god, or the sun planet, is the eye of all other planets. Because unless there is sunshine -- you may be very proud of your tiny eyes -- you cannot see. Therefore real eye is the sun, not your these balls, tiny balls. But still, we are so proud: "Can you show me God?" What, nonsense, what eyes you have got to see God? You cannot see yourself, and what to speak of seeing God?

So therefore it is said that dambha, false pride... Dambha-mana-madanvitah. These asuras, these demons, the rascals, they are simply falsely proud. That's all. They have no possession of pride; still, they are proud. So, that... I was speaking about the sun. So Krsna has given you the sunlight so that you can see. Krsna has given you the nice breeze. Therefore you can live; you can breathe. Everything is dependent. We are dependent. Without light, without air, without rain or water, how we can live? So we are completely dependent, but on account of false prestige, less intelligence, we are thinking that we are free, we can... "I am God. I can do anything." This is demonic attitude. Completely being dependent, as soon as the death comes, immediately we have to leave this position. "Sir, let me stay for one hour more." "No, not even a minute." This is our position.

But the demons, being... Instead of taking shelter of Krsna, instead of taking shelter of Krsna's bona fide servant, he takes shelter of this lust, lusty desires and pride and false prestige, this, that, so many. He has to take shelter; he cannot remain independent. But when he's less intelligent, he takes shelter of all these material things, and when he's intelligent, he takes shelter of Krsna. But when you takes shelter of these lusty desires, false pride, false prestige, illusion, then you are demon, and when you give up the shelter of all this nonsense and you take shelter of the Supreme Person, then you are divine.

But you cannot say at any stage that "I am independent." That is not possible. Your constitution is to remain dependent. Therefore the Vedas says, eko yo bahunam vidadhati kaman. He's maintaining you. God is maintaining. That's a fact. We cannot maintain your, ourself. He has given heat, light, air, water, fruits, flowers, grains, everything. Everything is there for you. There is no scarcity. Simply being less intelligent, taking shelter of lusty desires, false prestige, we are mismanaging the gift of God. Therefore we are in scarcity, therefore starvation. By God's arrangement there is everything. Purnam idam [Isopanisad, Invocation]. Everything is complete. Purnam adah. This creation is complete. Purnat purnam udacyate. Because it is created by God, it is complete, so you cannot find out any deficiency. Purnat purnam udacyate, purnasya purnam adaya purnam evavasisyate.

Just like you require water. That is very essential. Especially in the tropical countries, they use water very profusely for cleansing the whole house, for cleansing the body, for cleansing the utensils, cleansing the cloth. That is Vedic civilization, cleanliness. "Cleanliness is next to godliness." Everyone should take thrice bath, cleanse everything. In India, not in the city but in the villages, the woman's first duty is to cleanse the whole house, still. Early in the morning they'll sweep over the whole house, not this apartment, three feet, no, but it is a good house. There is courtyard. Without courtyard, it is pigeon's hole. But you like pigeon's hole, this big, big skyscraper building containing so many pigeon's hole. That's all. So in India still, although poor country, they have got a courtyard, a little garden. That kind of house, in the village that is the system. So the first business is cleanliness. Everything should remain clean.

And it is said by Canakya Pandita that if you want worldly happiness, then these things are required. Murkha yatra na pujyante. Don't worship rascals and fools, murkha. Murkha yatra na pujyante dhanyam yatra susancitam:(?) "And food grains are properly stocked." That is the Vedic civilization, that you work for three months, not very hard, simply till the ground and sow some food grain seed, and within three months it will grow, and you will have ample food grains, and you'll keep it in stock. And keep some cows. Dhanena dhanavan. They say that a rich man means one who has got sufficient stock of food grains. Food grains. Dhanena dhanavan. That is Vedic economic system. Gavayah dhanavan. Gavayah means by possessing some number of cows one is supposed to be rich. It is actually the fact. Everyone should possess some land for growing food grains and some cows to take milk. Then the whole economic problem is solved. But the asuras, they, as we have discussed in the previous verses, ugra-karmanah... Where is that verse?

    Nitai: Verse nine.

Prabhupada: Verse nine. Prabhavanty ugra-karmanah. Prabhavanty ugra-karmanah. Karma, you have to work. You cannot maintain yourself without working. That is material world. Material world is not spiritual world. In the spiritual world you haven't got to work, neither you have to eat. Everything is complete. But in the material world means for your maintenance you have to work. But that work is very simple. Grow some food grains and keep some cows, take the milk, and just prepare nice foodstuff and eat. Patram puspam phalam toyam. Keep Krsna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Deity, at home, and Krsna is pleased even you simply offer little fruit and little flower.

So Krsna doesn't want anything else. Krsna does not say, "Give Me meat. Give Me eggs. Give Me fish." No. He says, patram puspam phalam toyam yo me bhaktya prayacchati. So if you are devotee, you cannot take anything which is not offered to Krsna. So Krsna... I should offer to Krsna what He wants. Just like if you want to offer me something, so you inquire that "What shall I offer you? What do you like?" So similarly, if you invite Krsna to live in your house or temple, then you should ask Krsna, "Sir, what can I offer You?" Krsna said, patram puspam phalam toyam yo me bhaktya prayacchati. Krsna said that "You give Me patram, means vegetables, flowers, fruits, and phalam, fruits, and some liquid, water or milk." Krsna does not say, "You give Me meat or egg or fish." No. Krsna can eat everything, He's all powerful, but He does not eat, although He is all powerful. He can eat everything. He can eat fire. That is another thing. But because we have to take prasadam, remnants of foodstuff, Krsna, therefore He says, "Give Me this: food grains, milk, or fruits and flowers." Prepared or unprepared, it doesn't matter. Krsna wants that. We... So far the Vaisnava is concerned, sometimes they come forward to fight with us: "Why we should be vegetarian?" No, no, we have no quarrel with the nonvegetarian. Let them eat at their risk. But because we recommend, "You take Krsna's prasadam," therefore we must be satisfied with this patram puspam phalam toyam, nothing more than that.

But unfortunately, instead of taking shelter of Krsna, we have taken shelter of lusty desire. This is demonic. Therefore it is said, kamam asritya duspuram. Duspuram... Duh. Duh means very difficult, and puram means satisfaction. Duspuram. We have taken shelter of lusty desires which will never be satisfied. This is our position. Kamam asritya duspuram. These materialistic person, demon, their desires are never fulfilled -- increasing, increasing, increasing, more, more more. So that means, increasing means, we are becoming implicated more and more. The business of human life is how to become free from this material encagement, but the asuras or the demons, instead of becoming free from material entanglement, they become more and more involved. That is...

Just like that kite-flying. Kite-flying, there is that reel? What is called? No, you have no experience. So You can fly. The kite goes very high and high. In India kite-flying is very popular sport. So you can allow the kite go and go, very high, and at the same time you can bring it near and nearer by that wheel. So this wheel, this human form of body, is meant for not prolonging the unclean material life, but now stop it. Now stop it. It is meant for that purpose.

Therefore in the Vedanta-sutra it is said, athato brahma jijnasa: "Now inquire about... Sit down about... Sit down quietly and inquire about the necessity or the aim of life." That is explained in the Srimad-Bhagavatam, jivasya tattva-jijnasa nartho yas ceha karmabhih, kamasya nendriya-pritih. Kamasya nendriya, kama. Here it is called kama. Kama means lust. So because we have got this body, therefore we must have some kama. That is a fact. You cannot avoid it. Lusty desire there is, and for the up keep of the body the lusty desires may be fulfilled, but don't become lusty which is duspuram, which is never to be fulfilled. So kamasya na indriya-pritih. Just like lusty desires, generally it is with reference to sex life. So sex life is required for the physiological condition of the body. That is nature's way. Or by giving birth to some nice children, that sex life is required. Otherwise why God has made the arrangement of sex? There is need, but not duspuram. Kamasya na indriya-pritih: "Don't use it for sense gratification." You use it to fulfill the real purpose. So these lusty desires, unless you live a very regulated life, then it will be duspuram, it will be never be fulfilled -- always desire, always desire, always desire.

So these demons, they accept the shelter of lusty desire which will never be fulfilled, will never be satiated. But those who are devas, godly, their lusty desire is controlled, restricted. Therefore this varnasrama, four varnas, and four asramas, this is education how to control this lusty desire. That is required. In the beginning of life, the children, beginning from five years old up to twenty-five years, they are trained up as brahmacari. Why? Just to control the kamam duspuram. Kamam duspuram. Those who are not in bad association from childhood, if they practice celibacy, they are not disturbed. They are not disturbed. That is called brahmacari life. Why? To train the child of a human being. Because this human life is meant for stopping the cycle of birth and death. That is the mission.

Therefore sastra says that pita na sa syaj janani na sa syat, na mocayed yah samupeta-mrtyum. A man should not desire to become a father and the woman should not desire to become a mother unless both of them have taken the vow that "I shall beget a child and stop his cycle of birth and death." This is the duty of the parents, not that "I shall beget children like cats and dogs." There should be some meaning of the life. Samupeta-mrtyum. Because we have got the circumstances, unclean body, because we have got unclean body, therefore there is birth and death. Just like as soon as you are infected, there is fever, similarly, the birth and death is a kind of disease. It is also listed with disease. Janma-mrtyu-jara-vyadhi. They are on the same category: birth, death, old age and disease. They are on the same category. But we take care of two things, namely old age... We try to remain young by cosmetic, but that is not possible. Similarly, we want to live forever. The lady doctor was (saying), "Yes, we can extend little more." Then what...? After all, you have to die. Extend little more or little less, you cannot avoid death.

So this birth, death, old age, disease, this is due to this unclean, infected, material body. That we are not concerned, that how to stop this infected material body, how to revive our original spiritual body. That spiritual body is within, but we have no information. Therefore it is said, alpa-buddhayah. The real life is within. We don't take care. Who is taking care of the spiritual... Where is the university? Where is the college where is this training is given that "We are spirit soul. This body is temporary, and the spirit soul business is this so that spirit soul may be purified, no more he accepts this material body"? Where is that education? Therefore alpa-buddhayah: less intelligent. They are simply busy with these bodily necessities of life. There is no education of the real living force. That education you will get -- this Krsna consciousness movement. Therefore it is unique. It is the education to get people of the human society liberated from the animalistic ignorance. Because those who are under the impression of this bodily concept of life, sa eva go-kharah: [SB 10.84.13] they are no better than the asses and the cows.

    yasyatma-buddhih kunape tri-dhatuke
    sva-dhih kalatradisu bhauma ijya-dhih
    yat-tirtha-buddhih salile na karhicij
    janesv abhijnesu sa eva go-kharah
     [SB 10.84.13]

Go-kharah. Go-kharah means... Go means cows, and kharah means ass. The person is exactly the animal, cows or asses. Who? Now, yasyatma-buddhih kunape tri-dhatuke: "One who has accepted this body as self." Atma-buddhih kunape. This is a bag, the bag of tri-dhatus. According to Ayurvedic medical science this body is working under three elements, kapha, pitta, vayu. Therefore it is called tri-dhatu. So the whole world is going on on this concept of life. They have no spiritual. Even big, big professors, big, big, they also say that "This body is everything. After the body is finished, then everything is finished." But that is not the fact. That is the first spiritual education to understand, that "I am not this body." Aham brahmasmi: "I am spirit soul." And Krsna begins this preliminary education in the Bhagavad-gita --

    dehino 'smin yatha dehe
    kaumaram yauvanam jara
    tatha dehantara-praptir
    dhiras tatra na muhyati
     [Bg. 2.13]

So this alpa-buddha, less intelligent class, demons, they do not understand this. Why? Kamam asritya duspuram. Unnecessarily dambha. Just like the same example, dog. The dog is very proud, barking, "Yow! Yow! Yow!" He does not know that "I am chained." (laughs) He's such a foolish that as soon as the master, "Come on." (laughter) So maya is the master: "You rascal come here." "Yes." And he be see..., proud: "I am something." This doggish civilization, nasta-buddhaya, lost all intelligence... Less intelligent these are called. Kamam duspuram. So kamam, the lusty desires... On account of this body there is lusty desire. We cannot deny it. But don't make it duspuram, never to be satiated. Then finished. Make it limited. Make it limited. Therefore, according to the Vedic civilization, the lusty desire is there, but you cannot use it except for the purpose of begetting a nice child. That is called puram, means restricted.

So the brahmacari is educated in that way. Up to twenty-five years he cannot see a young woman. He cannot see even. This is brahmacari. He cannot see. Then he is trained up in that way, that he may continue a brahmacari life. Naisthika-brahmacari. But if he's unable, then he's allowed to marry. That is called grhastha life, householder life. Because between twenty-five years to fifty years, this is the youthful time, so his lusty desires are very strong. One who is not able to control... Not for all. There are many naisthika-brahmacari. Naisthika-brahmacari -- throughout the life, celibacy. But that is not possible in this age, neither it is possible to become a brahmacari. The time is changed, this age. Therefore you can control your lusty desire by Krsna consciousness. Otherwise it is not possible.

Yad-avadhi mama cetah krsna-padaravinde. One emperor, he was king, so naturally he was lusty also. So he gave up this life, became a devotee. So when he was perfectly situated, so he said, Yamunacarya -- he was the guru of Ramanujacarya -- so he said, that yad-avadhi mama cetah krsna-padaravinde: "Since I've trained my mind to be engaged in the service of the lotus feet of Krsna," yad-avadhi mama cetah krsna-padaravinde nava-nava-rasa-dhamany udyatam rantum asit, "daily I am offering service to Krsna. I am getting new, new pleasure." The spiritual life means... If one is actually situated in spiritual life he'll get spiritual pleasure, transcendental bliss, by serving more and more, new and new. That is spiritual life. So Yamunacarya said, yad-avadhi mama cetah krsna-padaravinde nava-nava-rasa-dhamany udyatam rantum asit: "When I am now realizing transcendental pleasure every moment by serving Krsna's lotus feet," tad-avadhi, "since then," bata nari-sangame... Sometimes we enjoy subtle pleasure, thinking of sex life. That is called nari-sangame. Nari means woman, and sanga means union. So those who are practiced, so when there is actually no union, they think of union. So Yamunacarya said that "Not actually union with woman, but if I think of union," tad-avadhi bata nari-sangame smaryamane, smaryamane, "simply by thinking," bhavati mukha-vikarah, "oh, immediately I becomes disgusted: ‘Ah, what is this nasty thing?' " Susthu nisthi... (spits) This is perfect. (chuckles) This is perfection. Yes. So long we'll think of, that is called subtle sex, thinking. They read the sex literature. That is subtle sex. Gross sex and subtle sex. So one has to become completely free from these lusty desires, not to become implicated which will never be satisfied, unsatiated, duspuram.

So the demons, they have taken shelter of these lusty desires, duspuram, never to be satisfied. Dambha-mana-madanvitah. Why? Mohat, by illusion. And on account of this illusion, grhitva asad-grahat. Asad-grahat. Asat means which will not stay, nonpermanent, for the time. Just like we have accepted this body. This is asad-graha. This body will not stay. Everyone knows, but still, I am too much attached to this body. This is called asad-graha. And so long we are attached to this nonpermanent body, there should be anxiety. Prahlada Maharaja says, asad-grahat, sada samudvigna-dhiyam asad-grahat. Because we have accepted this temporary body, therefore we are full of anxiety. Full of... He was asked by his father, "My dear son, what nice thing you have learned? Kindly say." Father wants to know how his son is being educated.

So Prahlada Maharaja replied that "My dear asura father..." He said. Asura-varya. He did not say, "father." He said, "My dear asura, the best of the asuras," asura-varya. Asura-varya, means best... That is the foolishness. The best -- -He heard the best, but he is addressing him as "asura, best asura." Still he is pleased, "Because I am best. I am best, best asura." So Prahlada Maharaja, a devotee, is very humorous, so he did not address his father as "father." He said, tat sadhu manye asura-varya: "O best among the asuras." (laughter) So he said, tat sadhu manye: "I think it is very nice." Tat sadhu manye 'sura-varya... Very nice for whom? Dehinam: those who have accepted this material body. That means all material living being. Tat sadhu manye 'sura-varya dehinam sada samudvigna-dhiyam: "Who are always full of anxieties..." That's a fact, full of anxiety. This is the test that we are in external material body. Therefore we are anxious. Tat sadhu manye 'sura-varya dehinam asad-grahat sada samudvigna-dhiyam. So for them this is the best formula. What is that? Hitvatma-patam grham andha-kupam. He should give up this so-called family life which is just like a dark well. Hitvatma-patam. The dark well... In the paddy field or in agricultural field they are. Formerly they used to dig wells, and sometimes they are covered with grass, and one man cannot know that there is... [break] ...and he should go to forest. Vanam gatah. Then what will be the benefit? Now, harim asrayeta: "Just take shelter of Krsna." Instead of taking shelter of these lusty desires, you take shelter of Krsna. Then your life is successful. Thank you very much. (end)

"The Demonic-No Sense Of God"  BY SRILA PRABHUPADA.

    Prabhupada: Yes. Go on.

Nitai: Etam... [break] "Following such conclusions, the demoniac, who are lost to themselves and who have no intelligence, engage in unbeneficial, horrible works meant to destroy the world."

    Prabhupada:

    etam drstim avastabhya
    nastatmano 'lpa-buddhayah
    prabhavanty ugra-karmanah
    ksayaya jagato 'hitah

These demons, further description... Yesterday we discussed that "The world is untruth, this material world is untruth," asatyam apratistham, "and there is no background." This is the conclusion of the atheist demons. We have explained that this world is not untrue. That is our Vaisnava philosophy. Untruth... If it is coming from the truth, it is true. How you can say untrue? The example: if cotton is truth, then thread is true. So if you say that thread is untruth, then cotton is also untruth, the cause. But they do not accept... (aside:) This child... Some sound is coming.

    Hamsaduta: Take the children outside.

Prabhupada: So, on the basis of this vision, that "there is no God, there is no background of this material creation, this material creation is false..." There are so many other conclusions of the demonic people. Demon and atheist, the same thing. So Krsna says, on this blind vision, etam drstim avastabhya. Accepting these are the basic principles of this material creation. Etam drstim avastabhya nasta atmanah. Lost their spiritual consciousness. Nasta means lost. Atmanah means the soul, the Supersoul. So atma, Paramatma. The Supersoul is Paramatma, and we are soul. So they have no knowledge. The defect of the modern civilization...

The demons and the raksasas, they're existing always. As I have told you, two classes of men are always there. But in this age the number of atheist class, or demons, are very much increased. Otherwise, material world means for the demons, atheistic class. Just like the prisonhouse. The prisonhouse means it is meant for the criminals. One may be a first-class prisoner, one may be a third-class prisoner, but it is prisonhouse. Similarly, anyone who is in this material world -- never mind whether he is Lord Brahma or the insignificant ant -- they are more or less all criminals. Criminal means disobeying. Disobeying the Lord or His order, they are materially criminal.

Therefore Krsna, the Supreme Lord, comes at times, at interval, when many, many millions of years have turned. He has got a schedule to come upon this planet. And when He comes, He comes there in Vrndavana, Mathura-Vrndavana. That is His headquarter within this universe. Therefore Mathura-Vrndavana is so important. (aside:) You can open this. Yes. (window opens) Dhama. Just like the governor. Governor has got his own house, government house. At the same time, when he goes on tour he has got a particular place called the circuit house. He stays there. Similarly, the whole creation is Krsna's property. Krsna said,

    bhoktaram yajna-tapasam
    sarva-loka-mahesvaram
    suhrdam sarva-bhutanam
    jnatva mam santim rcchati
     [Bg. 5.29]

We are missing that point. Krsna said, God said, the clear idea, that "I am the enjoyer, bhokta." Bhokta means enjoyer. "I am the enjoyer." Bhoktaram yajna-tapasam. Yajna. Yajna means satisfying the Lord. This is called yajna. Just like we are chanting this Hare Krsna mantra. It is yajna, sacrifice. At least we are sacrificing little time. Kali-yuga, nobody is prepared to sacrifice. Especially when there is question of sacrificing for God, nobody's interested. So this, because they'll not sacrifice, they will enjoy themself, forgetting the supreme enjoyer. Just like a servant. If he cooks and enjoys himself without offering to the master, then what is his position? That is sinful position. Similarly, anyone, the demons, they have no sense of God. They do not like to offer. They want to eat anything nonsense, like hogs and dogs, and... That is demonic life.

Ye pacanty atma-karanat. In the Bhagavad-gita you'll find. Read Bhagavad-gita very carefully. Bhunjate te tv agham papa ye pacanty atma-karanat: "Those who are eating and cooking for themselves, for satisfying the taste, such persons are eating the resultant action of sinful acts." They are all sinful. They are, who are cooking for themself without offering to the proprietor, to the master, they're all sinful. Therefore our program is to eat krsna-prasadam, the foodstuff, remnants of foodstuff, left by Krsna. Krsna is very kind. If you offer something to Krsna, He eats the offering. It is not that He's not eating. He is eating but at the same time keeping it for you as it was offered. He's not like us. If you give me something to eat, I'll finish the whole plate. Krsna is not like that. (laughter) Krsna... The atheist will say that He has not eaten. No, He has eaten. And that is Krsna.

That is stated in the Vedas, purnasya purnam adaya purnam evavasisyate. Krsna, expanding Himself into millions, still, He remains a Krsna, the same Krsna. It is not that material thing. If you take a material thing, anything, if you divide it into millions portion, then original form is finished. There is no more. You take a piece of paper and cut it into pieces and throw it all over. Then the original paper is lost. There is no more. That is material. But Krsna... Krsna, He is expanded. Eko bahu syat. The Lord said, "I shall become many." Many... Still, He is there. Is not because He has become many, therefore His original person is finished. No. That is the injunction in the Vedas, purnasya purnam adaya purnam eva avasisyate. He remains still purna. One minus thousand times one is still one. That is absolute. Absolute Truth means the truth never diminishes or becomes relative or conditioned. That is Absolute Truth.

So in the absolute platform, in the spiritual world, Krsna is the supreme whole spirit. Therefore He may expand Himself... Advaitam acyutam anadim ananta-rupam [Bs 5.33]. Ananta-rupam, various kinds of forms... Everything is Krsna's forms. Your form is also Krsna's form, my form is also Krsna's form. Therefore foolish rascals, they think, "Now I have become God." He has got the affinity that he is also God expansion. Therefore sometimes he thinks that "I am God." This is... We are also expansion of God, vibhinnamsa. There are two kinds of expansions: svamsa, vibhinnamsa. When Krsna expands in fullness, that is called svamsa, visnu-tattva. Just like Krsna has expanded Himself as Visnu, Narayana, Vasudeva, Sankarsana, Aniruddha, so many, millions. There is no limit. That is called svamsa. And Krsna expands as His energy, this material energy, this material world, the spiritual world, spiritual energy, and we are also energy, marginal energy. Tatastha. Tatastha means, marginal means... You can have a conception of marginal in the sea beach. The same place, walking, is sometimes covered with water, and sometimes it is land. This is called marginal, between the water and the land. So we living entities, we are marginal. Sometimes we are under the protection of the spiritual energy, and sometimes we are under the protection of the material energy. We are under protection; we are not independent.

Therefore in the Bhagavad-gita it is said, mahatmanas tu mam partha daivim prakrtim asritah [Bg. 9.13]. So mahatmas... Mahatmas means those who have realized God, not this politician mahatma, no. Mahatmas' description is there in the Bhagavad-gita. Mahatmanas tu mam partha daivim prakrtim asritah: [Bg. 9.13] "They are under the spiritual energy." They are not under the material energy. They are not mahatma. They are demons. So we are describing about the demons. Under the spiritual energy, one can understand his position, his relationship with God. Therefore it is said, mahatmanas tu mam partha daivim prakrtim asritah [Bg. 9.13]. And what is the sign? Bhajanty ananya-manaso jnatva mam, avyayam. Their business is bhajana. Bhajana means bhakti. Bhaj-dhatu. From bhajana, bhakti and bhajana, bhakti, bhaj-dhatu. Bhaja sevanam. Bhaj-dhatu means offering service, rendering service. So bhakti, bhajana, bhakta, bhagavata -- they are coming from the same root, bhaj-dhatu, Sanskrit. Those who know Sanskrit... So this is the sign of mahatma. Bhajanty ananya-manasah: "Without any deviation, without any other occupation, they are always engaged in devotional service." This is mahatma. Sa mahatma sudurlabhah. There are many, so many bogus mahatmas, the swamis, yogis, and incarnation and so many rascals, all raksasas, atheist. Such kind are not mahatmas. Sa mahatma sudurlabhah. That mahatma, who is actually mahatma, means bhajanty ananya-manasah, engaged fully in Krsna consciousness. That is ma... Sa mahatma sudurlabhah. Sudurlabhah means very, very rare to find out. The rascals posing themselves as mahatma, that is another thing. That is not authorized.

You have to accept anything from the authorized source. So according to Vedic civilization, all knowledge is received from the Vedas, perfect authorized source. Sruti-pramana, evidence from the sruti, from the Vedas, that is perfect. Therefore, according to Vedic civilization, if you want to establish something you have to quote the section or the injunction from the Vedas, Then it is perfect. In learned circle you cannot say anything hodge-podge. That will not be accepted. If you support your statement from the evidence of the Vedas, then you are accepted as authority. Therefore our principle is... Not only our, this is the Vedic principle. You'll find Caitanya Mahaprabhu giving instruction to Sanatana Gosvami, to Rupa Gosvami, or He was talking with Ramananda Raya -- in Caitanya-caritamrta you'll find -- and quoting support from the Vedas. Although Caitanya Mahaprabhu is God Himself, Krsna, Krsna-Caitanya, but He is not, what is called, autocratic or, what is called, dictator. No. You'll never find Him. Whatever He'll say, immediately He supported by Vedic evidence. He can say anything. He can manufacture anything. No, that He does not do. He does not violate the principle. In the Bhagavad-gita also... Krsna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead. He's also quoting from Vedas. He does not say, "I say." He says, but He says on the Vedic authority. He doesn't say anything superfluous, no. Brahma-sutra-padais caiva hetumadbhir viniscitaih [Bg. 13.5]. He said,

    yah sastra-vidhim utsrjya
    vartate kama-karatah
    na sa siddhim avapnoti
    na sukham na param gatim

He says, sastra, evidence, Vedic evidence, must be accepted. The Vedic evidence is very chronologized in the Vedanta-sutra. He especially mentioned, brahma-sutra-padaih. Brahma-sutra means Vedanta-sutra. Vedanta-sutra means the summary of all Vedic knowledge. The Vedic knowledge is given in codes. That is called Brahma-sutra. Sutra means code, and Brahman means the Supreme Absolute Truth. Understanding of the absolute truth in code words, and the explanation... A code word requires explanation.

Just like in business circle there is Bentley's code. So for business facility, for saving expenditure, the telegraphic codes are there. So one who does not know what is this code, but he can refer to the book. The explanation is there: "This code means this wording." Similarly, Brahma-sutra means the whole Vedic knowledge is given in codes. Brahma-sutra-padais caiva hetumadbhih. It is called nyaya-prasthana. Nyaya means logic. Nyaya means... There are three kinds of authorities: sruti-prasthana, smrti-prasthana, and nyaya-prasthana. So the Brahma-sutra is nyaya-prasthana, very logically, very logically given.

Just like in the first code in the Brahma-sutra is athato brahma jijnasa. Brahma-jijnasa, to inquire about the Absolute... The jijnasa means inquiry. In the cats' and dogs' life the inquiry is "Where is food? Where is shelter? Where is sex?" and "Where is defense?" only these four inquiries. The cats and dogs, they are busy, "Where is food? Find out some food." The pig is finding out: "Where is stool? Where is stool?" Here I do not know whether you have got experience. In our country, in the villages, there are so many pigs loitering. They are simply finding out where is stool. In the village the children, they pass stool here and there, and the men, they go to the field and pass, evacuate. So all these pigs are always loitering there. So they're seeking. The inquiry is for stool. They may take it as food, but after all, it is stool. So according to the body, the different foods are there. That is also described. Sattvika-ahara, rajasika-ahara, tamasika-ahara. Everything is there in the Bhagavad-gita.

So in the animal life they are, after seeking where is food. Then, as soon as the body is strong, then "Where is sex? Find out the opposite sex." You'll find in the hogs' life very prominent, all these things. For sex they have no discrimination whether it is mother or sister or anyone. You'll find that. These are... We have to take lessons from nature's study. The hog is sometimes trying to drink the milk from the breast of the mother and sometimes trying to have sex. You'll find it. This is hog life. This is dog life: no sex discrimination, no food discrimination, no shelter discrimination, no defense discrimination. But all these things -- "Discrimination, the best part of valor" -- that is in human civilization. Therefore the Vedanta-sutra said, athato brahma jijnasa: "Now... In your previous lives as cats and dogs and hogs, you simply were busy for inquiring ‘Where is stool?' ‘Where is food?' ‘Where is sex?' ‘Where is this?' ‘Where is that?' Now, because you have got human body, better consciousness, advanced consciousness, discrimination, now you inquire about Brahman."

This is Vedanta, beginning. So therefore human life is meant for understanding the absolute truth, God, the background of everything. Immediately answer is there: "The Brahman means janmady asya yatah [SB 1.1.1], the origin of everything." That is Brahman, origin of everything. There must be something origin. That is consciousness. Not that asatyam: "There is no origin." What is the nonsense? This is not human consciousness. This is animal consciousness, "There is no origin." There must be origin. I am... Because my origin is the father, my father, cause... I am born by my father. Common sense. Then his father, then his father, his father, go on, go on, go on... Although you do not know, but this is a fact that father is born by his father, and his father is born by his father. How can you deny it? He may not know the grandfather, great grandfather or more than that, but there must have been some person. Similarly, we may be foolish -- we do not know; we cannot understand who is the original father -- but there must have been the original father. That is God. That is God. Where is the deficiency to understand this fact?

Therefore, accepted, God is accepted as the original father. The Christian, they go to the original father: "O Father, O God, give us our daily bread." So we also accept. That is the godly conception. That is the beginning of religious conception. Dharmam tu saksad bhagavat-pranitam [SB 6.3.19]. What is dharma, religion? It is the codes given by God. That is dharma. Just like the state, the government, gives law: "You have to do like this. Keep to the right." You have to keep your car to the right. This is law. You cannot say, "Why not to the left?" You cannot say. Then you are criminal. Similarly, there are codes and description in the sastra what God wants. Just like in the Bhagavad-gita God said that bhoktaram yajna-tapasam: [Bg. 5.29] "I am the enjoyer of all sacrifices, all tapasya." You are engaged in some research work, tapasya, for what purpose? Now, finding out some deadly bone. A very big scholar, very big research student... So that is called asura. He has got some scientific knowledge, but he's busy to find out a nuclear weapon, how to kill other enemies. This is the research work. No. That is demonic. The same knowledge can be utilized for finding out God. That is mahatma. This is the difference.

You may have some particular knowledge. Suppose you are expert singer. Very good, but if you earn your money for fulfilling your sense desires, that is demonic. But you know the art, how to sing. If you very melodiously sing Hare Krsna mantra, then you are demigod. The same thing can be utilized both ways. Anything. Therefore sastra says, idam hi pumsas tapasah srutasya va [SB 1.5.22]. People are advancing by research and by education. Srutasya means education, and tapasah... And to become very learned scholar, scientist, it requires tapasya, austerities, penance. It is not that all of a sudden one becomes very great scientist. After many, many research work. Therefore it is called tapasya. Idam hi pumsas tapasah srutasya va svistasya suktasya ca buddhi-dattayoh [SB 1.5.22]. People do very pious activities, charity, munificence. What is the purpose? What is the purpose of becoming educated, learned scholar, very charitable and all these pious activities? What is the end? Ask them. Somebody will say, those who believe next life -- that is also fact -- that "Next life also, I will get opulence, properly situated." That is also fact.

But we Vaisnava philosopher, Krishnites, we do not think in that terms. Suppose in next life I become some demigod like Lord Brahma or the Moon or the Sun. They are all demigods. Or Vayu, Varuna. The Vaisnava says, "No, we don't want this." Because either you become Rockefeller or Ford in this life and next life the king of Moon planet or Sun planet or in any way, up to the Brahma planet, Brahmaloka, Lord Brahma, Krsna says, abrahma-bhuvanal lokah punar avartino 'rjuna: [Bg. 8.16] "My dear Arjuna, by your endeavor, even you become promoted to the highest position of this material world, still, you have to die, and again -- either come down or remain there -- there will be change of body." Abrahma-bhuvanal lokah punar avartino 'rjuna [Bg. 8.16]. "So why should you be implicated in these material activities? Try to come to Me, back to home, back to Godhead. Then you'll haven't got to return again in this material world. That is the highest perfection." So this is called brahma-jijnasa. By inquiring about Brahman one can understand that "Even if I go to the topmost planet of this material world, the four principles of miseries -- birth, death, old age and disease -- there is."

When Brahma, Lord Brahma, was asked by Hiranyakasipu to make him immortal... He was undergoing severe penances to become immortal. So Lord Brahma immediately said, "I am not immortal. How can I give you the benediction of immortality? That is not possible." Then, indirectly... He was very cunning. Then he... Indirectly he thought that "If I get benediction like this, I'll automatically become immortal." What is that? "Now, no man can kill me." "All right, that's all right." "No demigod can kill me." "That's all right." But he forgot God. Because he is godless, he did not say, "Even God cannot kill me." That he forgot. In this way he took benediction that "I shall not die on the land." "Yes." "I shall not die on the water." "Yes." "I shall not die in the air." "Yes." "I shall not be killed by any animal." "Yes." In this way, whatever intelligence he got, but he forgot one thing, that "God cannot also kill me." Because maya is there, he forgot it. He took so many benediction, but he did not take this benediction, that "Even God cannot kill me." That he forgot. Therefore, ultimately, with all his intelligence, he failed to become immortal.

So these are all demoniac activities. The divine activities, they are different. So Krsna is describing here that etam drstim avastabhya. They manufacture so many demonic ideas, but real idea they forget. Real idea is "God is great; I am small. Therefore I am eternal servant of God," Simple thing. "God is great." Everyone says, "God is great," but he is trying to be as great as God. How it is possible? If you are so powerful -- you can become as great as God -- then why you are trying to become God if you are actually as great as God? That answer they cannot give. Why you have fallen into this material world as a very, very small, insignificant? God is not insignificant. That is demonic idea. Therefore it is called etam drstim avastabhya. Their vision is not very correct. Etam drstim avastabhya nasta atmanah. Nasta means lost, lost. Just like if you are lost of your intelligence, you can talk all nonsense. Nastatmanah. "There is no God" means nastatmanah. He's not very intelligent. He has lost his intelligence. Atmanah. Nastatmanah. Why nastatmanah? Alpa-buddhayah: the intelligence is not very sharp, alpa, poor fund of knowledge. Poor fund of knowledge. On account of poor fund of knowledge they think like that: "There is no God. I am God," and so on, so on, "There is no basic principle of this creation." They do not know.

The basic principle of creation is that this material world is the field of activities of the rebellious living entity. "I don't want to serve Krsna. I want to serve my senses." That is the whole world, going on. This Hawaiian city or any city, especially in your America, they're very, very busy. So ask them, "What is the aim of your life?" They'll say, "Sense gratification. I shall earn money, eat nicely, drink nicely, enjoy nicely. That is the aim of life." They do not know. Etam drstim avastabhya. Their vision is so polluted. Nastatmanah: they have lost their spiritual ideas, spiritual sense or Krsna consciousness. The highest principle of spiritual sense means Krsna consciousness, to understand God. That is mahatma, mahatma.

    bahunam janmanam ante
    jnanavan mam prapadyate
    vasudevah sarvam iti
    sa mahatma sudurlabhah
     [Bg. 7.19]

So without becoming Krsna conscious, everyone's life is baffled; he's demon. So demons, they are trying only to adjust things materially, which is impossible. So they are busy, prabhavanti, flourishing, prabhavanti. Prabhavanti means flourishing. Ugra-karmanah. Karma... We have to do some work. That's a fact. Krsna says that "Without doing something, you cannot maintain your body and soul together." Karmano jyayo... What is that? No. That... Karma is better then vikarma. The... Krsna says that "You must be engaged in some work. You cannot sit idle. That is not good." "Idle brain is a devil's workshop." Krsna never said that "My dear Arjuna, you are My first-class devotee. Now you sit down and I'll do everything for you." No. Krsna never said. Rather, Arjuna was not willing to fight, and Krsna was inducing him, "You must fight. You must fight." Krsna never said that "You become idle krsna-bhakta," never said. So those who are trying to be idle krsna-bhakta, they are not devotees. One must be engaged with Krsna's work. That is devotion. Satatam kirtayanto mam yatantas ca drdha-vratah [Bg. 9.14]. Always chanting the glory of Krsna and trying everything for benefit of Krsna, that is mahatma. Mahatmanas tu mam partha daivim prakrtim... [Bg. 9.13], bhajanty an... Bhajanti means "He's always engaged in My service." That is mahatma. Laziness is not bhakti. There must be something. But if somebody says, "Now I'll chant sitting down. Who is going to see me? I'll doze and people will know I am chanting." You see? This kind of cheating will not do.

All those who are interested in Krsna consciousness... Therefore we have given time, sixteen rounds. But you are not Haridasa Thakura that you'll be able to chant whole day and night. If without working, if you chant, that is, the highest state. That you cannot do. Then you sleep. That's all. So know that. The minimum quantity, sixteen rounds chant, and that will take not more than two hours. And other twenty-two hours, you be always busy in Krsna's activities. That is required. That is

    satatam kirtayanto mam
    yatantas ca drdha-vratah
     namasyantas ca mam bhaktya
    nitya-yukta upasate
     [Bg. 9.14]

This is upasate. So work is there. Just like Arjuna. Arjuna is fighting. That is also Krsna consciousness. Yudhyasva mam anusmara [Bg. 8.7]. Krsna said that "You chant... You remember Me. At the same time, fight." Yudhyasva mam anusmara. He never said that "Simply fight" or "Simply chant," because in the material world that is not possible. Therefore chanting must be there, but at the same time, you have to work how to continue this movement. The movement requires energy.

We are printing so many books. For spreading this knowledge, that must be distributed. Home to home, place to place, man to man, this literature must go there. If he... If one takes one book, at least one day he'll read it: "Let me see what is this book I have purchased the other day." And if he reads one line his life will be successful, if he reads one line only, carefully. This is such literature. So therefore book distribution I am giving so much stress. Somehow or other, small book or big book, if it is given to somebody he'll read someday and he'll derive... Svalpam apy asya dharmasya trayate mahato... Just like the Vedanta-sutra says, janmady asya yatah [SB 1.1.1]. So you can research, make research work throughout the whole life, where is the original source of everything. That is Krsna consciousness. If you not dull, if you are intelligent and if you take the sutra, this code, janmady asya yatah [SB 1.1.1], the original source of everything... That is knowledge, that is philosophy, that is science -- to find out the original source. That is Krsna consciousness. So we are not searching after the original consciousness, but we are giving to the people directly that "Here is the original source of everything, Krsna." (end)
