Narrated PradyumnaOnce in1968, Srila Prabhupada finished a programme at the montreal temple and was walking back to his apartment, a couple of blocks away, along with Gaurasundar, Vamanadev, and myself. We were on Park Avenue when Vamanadev said to Srila Prabhupada, " That was a great kirtan. I enjoyed it so much." Srila Prabhupada immediately turned to him and said, " kirtan is not for you to enjoy. It is for Krsna`s pleasure. If you enjoy it, then that is not kirtan." So, we chant for the pleasure of Krsna, and we do not chant for our own pleasure. If we chant for our own pleasure, we are actually not doing Kirtan, we are doing what some call "maya kirtan." Krsna kirtan is praising Krsna for His pleasure.
