Srimati Sita Devi Appearance Day – May 08, 2014

Srimati Sita Devi is the daughter of Bhumi Devi and the consort of Sri RamaKing Janaka who was the ruler of Janakapuri was childless. When Janaka Maharaj was ploughing a piece of land he unearthed agolden casket in which he found a beautiful girl baby. A land ploughed by the yoke is called 'Sita', and so he named the baby as Sita. At this time, his queen also gave birth to a girl who was named Urmila.

One day, sage Parashurama who came to visit king Janaka left his bow at the doorstep and Sita began playing with it as if it were a play-horse. Only those with great physical strength could lift such a bow. When Parashurama spotted Sita playing with it, he told Janaka that only a great and strong person can wed this girl and asked him to arrange a Swayamvara for her.

King Janaka possessed a bow blessed by Lord Shiva and he decided to give her hand to one who could lift it and organized a Swayamvara. Many noble princes tried lifting the bow and failed. Sage Vishvamitra, accompanied by his disciples Rama and Lakshmana, arrived at Mithila. Sri Rama raised the bow with ease and as he bent the bow, it broke. Sita devi accepted him as her husband.

Rama’s father, King Dasharatha wanted to crown him as king. King Dasharatha's third consort Kaikeyi, wanted that her son Bharata should be the king, and that Rama should go to the forest for fourteen years. Dasharatha was shocked to hear this but was forced to agree as he had promised her long ago that he would fulfill any wish of hers.

Rama agreed to go to the forest to fulfill his pledge. On hearing this, Sita and Rama's younger brotherLakshmana also insisted that they would accompany him. Rama eventually had to agree. Deep in the forest at Panchavati, they came across a large-sized eagle. It said: "Raghurama, I am Jatayu, a friend of your father. When you and Lakshmana go out, I shall guard Sita."

Shurpanakha, a demoness who saw Rama and Lakshmana was struck by their beauty and wished to marry one of them. She assumed the form of a beautiful damsel and asked Rama to marry her. Rama told her that as he was already married, she should ask his brother Lakshmana. Lakshmana also refused. When she persisted, he cut off her ears and nose. Shurpanakha was the sister of Ravana, the king of Lanka.  She narrated everything to him and also told him about Sita's beauty. Hearing about Sita's beauty, the evil Ravana thought of abducting her!

His plan was to lure Rama and Lakshmana away from their hermitage and then kidnap Sita. He conceived a plan and asked his relative Mareecha to execute it. As planned, Sita spotted Mareecha in the guise of a golden deer and asked Rama to capture it. In pursuit, it took Rama far away and finally when Rama shot it, Mareecha cried out: "Ha, Lakshmana! Ha Sita!" imitating Rama's voice. On hearing this cry, Sita who was alarmed, asked Lakshmana to go and investigate. Lakshmana tried to console her and said that Rama was safe and these were all the rakshasas' tricks.

Sita got angry and forced him to go. In their absence Ravana came in the guise of a sannyasi and revealed that he was Ravana, the king of Lanka and asked Sita to marry him.  When she refused, he carried her to his chariot and drove away. Jatayu who was awakened by Sita's cries attacked Ravana's chariot. Ravana lashed at Jatayu and cut off his wings. Upon his return, Rama searched around for Sita and found Jatayu, who informed Rama about the abduction of Sita.

Ravana brought Sita to Lanka and imprisoned her in the Ashokavanagarden and engaged demons to guard her. Rama and Lakshmana werewandering in search of Sita. Sighting them from atop the Rishyamuka hill, Sugriva, a king of the monkeys, sent his minister Hanuman to bring them to him. Sugriva’s elder brother Vali, had deported him from his land, and he sought Rama’s help. Both pledged to help each other.

Rama killed Vali and installed Sugriva on the throne. Sugriva sent his soldiers to all corners of the country to search for Sita. Rama called Hanuman and asked him to go to Lanka and as a sign of recognition to give Sita his ring. Hanuman went with the speed of wind and reached Lanka and found Sita at Ashokavana. He stood before Sita singing the praise of Rama and revealed his real self. He gave her the ring given by Rama and told her about the

welfare
of the brothers. Sita felt relieved. She gave Hanuman a Chudamani (crest-jewel) she was wearing and asked him to give it to Rama.

Rama immediately proceeded towards Lanka. A bridge was built across the sea. The armies of Rama and Ravana fought a fierce battle ending in the death of Ravana. Rama installed Vibhishana, a younger brother of Ravana, as the king of Lanka. After that, at Rama's asking, Vibhishana brought Sita to Rama.

Mother Sita had spent all her days in worshipping Rama in her mind. She had patiently withstood Ravana's insults and threats. She waited long for Rama to come, conquer Ravana and free her.

Rama told Sita: "You have been with the rakshasas for a year. I cannot accept you as my wife as before. You are now free to go anywhere and live."

Can Rama speak so cruelly? Sita could not believe her ears. She decided to sacrifice her body to Agni and asked Lakshmana to prepare a fire.

With tears in his eyes, Lakshmana prepared the fire. Sita bowed to her husband and prayed: "Lord Agni, if I am faithful to my husband, protect me." So saying, she walked into the flames. Lord Agni stepped out of the fire carrying Sita. He told Rama: "She is absolutely pure. Accept this fine woman." Rama then said, "I know Sita is pure. I had to do this so that people should not say something bad later." He welcomed Sita.
