This morning we read from Srimad Bhagvatam canto 7, chapter 15 , text no. 25 translation and purport by Srila Prabhupada, Srila Prabhupada ki ……………jai
“rajas tamas ca sattvena rajas tamas ca sattvena sattvam copasamena ca
etat sarvam gurau bhaktya puruso hy anjasa jayet”
TRANSLATION: One must conquer the modes of passion and ignorance by developing the mode of goodness, and then one must become detached from the mode of goodness by promoting oneself to the platform of suddha-sattva. All this can be automatically done if one engages in the service of the spiritual master with faith and devotion. In this way one can conquer the influence of the modes of nature.
PURPORT: Just by treating the root cause of an ailment, one can conquer all bodily pains and sufferings. Similarly, if one is devoted and faithful to the spiritual master, he can conquer the influence of sattva-guna, rajo-guṇa and tamo-guṇa very easily. Yogis and jnanis practice in many ways to conquer the senses, but the bhakta immediately attains the mercy of the Supreme Personality of Godhead through the mercy of the spiritual master. “Yasya prasadad bhagvat prasado” If the spiritual master is favorably inclined, one naturally receives the mercy of the Supreme Lord, and by the mercy of the Supreme Lord one immediately becomes transcendental, conquering all the influences of sattva-guṇa, rajo-guṇa and tamo-guṇa within this material world. This is confirmed in Bhagavad-gita “sa guṇan samatityaitan brahma-bhuyaya kalpate” [Bg. 14.26]). If one is a pure devotee acting under the directions of the guru, one easily gets the mercy of the Supreme Lord and thus becomes immediately situated on the transcendental platform. This is explained in the next verse.
“rajas tamas ca sattvena rajas tamas ca sattvena sattvam copasamena ca
etat sarvam gurau bhaktya puruso hy anjasa jayet”
“Instructions for civilized human beings” in the chapter’s title. Instructions are coming directly from Narada Muni, Sri Narada uvacha……He himself is more than civilized hence certainly qualified to give instructions, So that we could become civilized or population of this world could become civilized. This dialogue is between Narada Muni and Yudhisthira Maharaj, 7th canto. So great souls are having dialogue here so they are concerned about rest of the world. Yudhisthira Maharaj is the king and Narada Muni is the spiritual master.
Krishna all the instruction originally comes from Krishna “proktavan aham avyayam” (B.G 4.1) jai……ho Radha Gokulananda ki ………jai, all the instruction comes from Radha Gokulananda.
“evam parampara praptam imam rajarsayoviduh” (B.G 4.2) so we could see Yudhisthira Maharaj is raja, he is a king. But he is not just ordinary raja he is rajarsi he is a saintly king. How does raja become rajarsi? How does king become saintly king? By association with the saintly persons he become rajarsi, rajarsi. So that is the system Krishna said I spoke this knowledge to sun god Vivasvan then it was coming down and in parampara this knowledge is received and the first part that received the knowledge is king “evam parampara praptam imam rajarsayoviduh” viduh - they come to know they find out the saintly persons in parampara, why should raja the king become the 1st one to receive the knowledge “yatha raja tatha praja” you have heard of this ? You could memories this very simple thing is very important proverb, subhashit “yatha raja tatha praja” yatha –just like, tatha –like that yatha –tatha, yatha , yatha raja just like raja raja, that like him is praja. The citizens would be just like the king. Just let me know who your raja is? Then I will tell all about the praja we could say that right. Just let me know who is your king? Then I come to know I can tell all about the citizens. Ok my raja is Ram then immediately I know what kind of praja there citizens of Sri Ram few days we celebrated Ram Navami, Ram appeared some Nine hundred thousand years ago, that’s very close to one millions yrs ago.
So many kings have come and gone but He was a best raja, best king that world has even seen is Sri Ram. So that must be the reason when Indian leaders, Indian congress leaders were trying tomake India independent country. Yes quit India get out of here they were saying this Britishers , we want our own roof and leader of this team that was fighting for freedom was our Gandhiji he said as soon as we have our independence we would establish Ram Raj. Why Ram Raj? Why not any other raj. Because of course when Krishna or Ram plays any role Ram is here king and He is a best king and then Krishna is a best friend, best lover. Krishna plays different roles best husband also. There is no husband like Krishna no friend like Krishna. Krishna plays these different roles and no devotee like Krishna also right? 500 years ago Krishna became a devotee- Sri Krishna Citanya Mahaprabhu and world has not seen any devotee like Him. There wasn’t any one before and there will not be any one in the future like Sri Krishna Caitanya Mahaprabhu and he performed that role perfectly that whole Indians convinced that he was only bhakta not Bhagvan “nato natya dharo yatha”.
“nato natya dharo yatha” when Lord performs any role becomes “nat – nati” nati is a actor and nati- is a actress. So the Lord is enacting different roles. So 500 yrs ago He became devotee and He played role of a devotee. Bhaktavatar and He has become most famous devotee as a result they forgot that He was a Lord. We have hard time convincing Indians no; no He was original devotee of the Lord Supreme Personality of Godhead, His devotion and ecstasies and all those qualities.
So Ram became Raja and the praja had very good good time during Ram rajas time. There were no traces of goodness, passion, ignorance in His kingdom during His time. Everyone was transcendentally situated that is how you make yours citizens happy blissful. So how you make citizens happy? How to make them civilized? And as they become civilized they become happy also those instructions are here. Last night we were talking “prabhupada you should be president of india” one disciple said during morning walk in Delhi. They were walking in the area where there are parliament building and presidents palace. The parliament and the presidents house was instruct devotees were walking with Prabhupada “you should be president and Prabhupada said I am not interested. But then he added I would prefer to be spiritual master to the president of India. Jai……..so that’s the role of a guru.
“gurau bhaktya” “ etat sarvam gurau bhaktya puruso hy anjasa jayet” as soon as there is guru bhakti devotion unto spiritual master and following his instructions. Then purusa- the person he certainly anjasa - very easily, jayet- he could conquer,what does he have to conquer some kingdom, much easy, to conquer a kingdom is easier than conquering the mind. Of the 2 things conquering the kingdoms becoming emperor is much easier then conquering the mind. By following the instructions of spiritual master one could conquer the mind.
Then that conquered mind would surrender unto Krishna, mind is not surrendering unto Krishna, Krishna is demanding yes, yes “sarva dharmanparityajya mam ekam saranam vraja” (B.G 18.66) surrender unto me, but mind has been conquered, mind is wandering all over the universe, not surrendering. So if one could surrender unto spiritual master andthen instruction are there and those instructions are not his own instructions, spiritual master’s instructions’ are instructions of Sri Krishna. Prabhupada used to say, O! What’s the difference Krishna says surrender unto me and what does spiritual master says? Surrender unto Krishna same thing. Transparent via media, Krishna says surrender unto me and spiritual master says “etat sarvam gurau bhaktya puruso hy anjasa jayate”. One could become conqueror of the 3 worlds, first private victory then other victories. Private personal victory is becoming victorious by conquering the mind that is first victory. Then mind is not conquered all victories are futile or all victories are defeat only if the mind is not conquered.
So first victory comes conquering the mind “bhaja hure mana sri nanda-nandana abhaya-caranaravinda re”, “ bhaja hure mana sri nandana” O! my dear mind please, please , please worship abhayacharanarvinda re, the lotus feet of Abhaya-caran, lotus feet of Govind, lotus feet of Radha Gokulananda and how is this accomplished? “durlabha manava-janama sat-sange” Prahalad Maharaj would say”durlabham amnusam janma tad apyadhruvam arthadam” (S.B 7.6.1) he also says adhruvam- the human form of life is rare, very rare adhruvam- its temporary, adhruvam but arthadama-its meaningful, it has purpose, “apy adhruvam” in spite of this human form of life being short arthadam- its meaningful, it has purpose behind the human form of life. “durlabha manava-janama sat-sange” O dear disciple, human being, citizen go for satsanga, go for association of devotees. “taroho e bhava –sindhu re” then you will transcend this bhava sagar, you will transcend this material existence.
So instructions’ like that instructions for civilized human beings is the chapter and there will be more instructions further more detail instructions so there will be more detail instructions here. “rajas tamas ca sattvena rajas tamas ca sattvena sattvam copasamena ca” yes my dear sir that you have been bind up “hye what is binding me I am free, what are you talking about I am independent” no sir sorry, excuse me you have been bound up, no ..no, no…no, you are - there battle going on.
“prakrteh kriyamanani gunaih karmani sarvasah” (B.G 3.27) Krishna’s instructions “prakrteh kriyamanani gunaih karmani sarvasah” the gunas of the prakrati of this 3 modes of material nature are making you dance sir, you may not see the subtle strings tied to your neck or to your hands or to different parts of your body and mind. You are just a puppet in the hands of the “prakrteh kriyamanani gunaih” gunaih – means by the 3 gunas, gunaih karmani sarvasah all the activities which you are performing you are made to perform you have no choice but you are made to perform those activities. Gunaih that’s the plural gunaih bythe gunas, how many gunas are there? There are 3 modes of material nature. But as he is full of ahankar “ahankara vimudhatma kartahamiti manyate” (B.G 3.27) aham- I am the doer because he is a vimudhatma, what kind of atma not only mudha but another adjective, prefix has been used vi-mudha, not just ordinary fool but 1st class fool, he is vimudhatma , not only mudha but vimudha. Karta aham, aham-doer, aham – I am, manyate- he only thinks like this, I am the doer but all the activities are being performed by the 3 modes of material nature. So we don’t see anything around us I am free, no you are not free the 3 modes of material nature they are making you dance this way that way.
So there are three modes of material nature mentioned here “raja tamas ca sattvena rajas tamas ca sattvena” rajo guna, tamo-guna and satva – guna this guna also another meaning of guna is rope also, ropes. So these 3 gunas are 3 different kinds of ropes satva-guna is one kind of rope “rassi” rajo-guna is another guna, another rope, another rashi, tamo-guna is yet another rope. Of the 3 which rope is the stronger rope, these are 3 gunas 3 kinds of ropes we should know, this is the understanding, this I the knowledge which rope is strongest? Tamo-guna is the strongest and less stronger? Rajo-guna and lesser than that is satva-guna and suddha satva that will be mentioned here that’s is you are free from the bonds zero bondage, that means you are not bind by any gunas not even by goodness, then that’s suddha-satva , satva and suddha satva or Prabhupad also explains that those who are bind by those 3 modes meaning that they are bound by 3 ropes easy to understand right? Those who are bind by passion or rajo-guna that means they are bound by how many ropes? 2 ropes and person bond by goodness is bound by 1 rope.
Sometimes some animals are bound by more than one rope the cow is bound something’s like that or buffalo is bound here, legs are also bound. Then very difficult to break all those bonds. One must conquer the modes of passion and ignorance by developing mode of goodness. One conquers mode of passion and ignorance. And by cultivating pure mode of goodness what does one conquer? By cultivation by developing pure mode of goodness then what happens? One conquers all the modes ignorance, passion, goodness also and that is called transcendence or transcendental, transcendence 3 modes of material natures means free “guna-mai-mamam maya duratyaya” (B.G 7.14) tri guna-mayi maya, maya, maya is triguna mayi means full of 3 modes of material nature. We need to know we need to understand if we are bound or if we wish to be liberated, first we have to admit that we are bound, otherwise you already think O! I am “karta” I am free, I am independent then get lost, then there is no homework for you, you are already liberated. But that’s not the case, we are bound, the first understanding should be I am bound, I am conditioned, I am conditioned I am bound. Yes we admit we are bound, otherwise we can’t move forward, are we bound? (A child answers yes, maharaja says yes you also little child). So what is binding us? What is binding us 3 modes of material nature are binding us this is knowledge.
In the 14th chapter of Bhagavad Gita there is whole explanation Krishna is explaining how we are bound. So what is binding us? These 3 modes of material nature are explained in further detail in 14th chapter of Bhagvad-gita which we should be studying if you wish to be liberated free from the bonds we have understand what is binding me? And how strong or weak is that bond the bond is stronger then I will have to work harder, bring a bigger bomb to explode that bondage “Hare Krishna Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna Hare Hare Hare Ram Hare Ram Ram Ram Hare Hare” is that bomb this is “Hare Krishna bomb” Prabhupad preached in New York, he was bombarding showering New York with Hare Krishna bombs,
“Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Hare Krishna” then he also had time bombs what were the time bombs? His books were time bombs in due course of time they would explode, they would break all the bonds, bombs would make you free from all the bonds, these are transcendental bombs. The other bombs also exploded and then all the connection in this world are finished you are finished, they finish you, but these transdencetal bombs they don’t finish you, you continue to exist but you are just liberated you just become free from the bonds things which are binding you. And then the time comes you are ready to go no strings attached you are ready to take off. At the time of death if you are attached, bond are goodness, passion and ignorance and then we have to come back again.
So all these subtle bonds are there in the mind, mind is influenced by the whole world around us. So “triguna mayi maya” maya is full of 3 modes of material nature. The food that we eat is of how many different kinds? 3 or 4, could be 4 also. So food in mode of Ignorance, the food in mode of passion- passionate food and goodness food satvikahar. If you eat just “patram puspam phalam toyam” (B.G 9.26) but not offered to the Lord then it is goodness, you go to the market buy meat cut, cook and eat what is that food? Ignorance. There are some passionate foods – fast foods, junk foods. Every food is either good food or passionate food or ignorant food and then transcendental food, what is transcendental food? Prasadam food offered to the Lord “patram puspam phalam toyam yo me bhaktya” by devotion you offer to Krishna, then immediately it is transcendental, free from 3 modes of material nature.
So when anyone who eats food that food doesn’t only create this body “anad bhavanti bhutani” Krishna says in Bhagvad gita- all the living entities subsist on food grains, we survive on food grains. So body is made up of food but not only gross body is made up of food our subtle body is also made up of the food what we eat. So subtle is what? Mind, intelligence and ego, so if the food is ignorant food, full of ignorance so that person’s mind would also be what kind of mind is he developing? Ignorant mind or mind influenced by Ignorance.
If person eats passionate food then body is growing that food at the same time his mind is developing mind is also made up of the essence of that food. So food is passionate, the mind would be passionate also. If the food consumption is goodness; mode of goodness the mind also would be good mind. But the one who honours prasadam then his mind would be? What? Transcendental mind, purified mind, krishnaised mind. So the food that we eat body is made from that food and mind is also made from that food this is how you become. “You are what you eat you just tell me what kind of food you eat then I will tell you who you are” what kind of person you are? You don’t have to tell me, just tell me what you eat and I would know all about you. So this is about the food. So food is a big factor in cultivation of different modes person is ignorant because his food is of that kind, he is passionate because his food is of that kind and things like that. So one who wishes to be free from these 3 mode of material nature which are 3 different kinds of bonds, some stronger, some weaker then he has to honour prasadam.
“sevonmukhe he jihvadau svayan eva sphuraty” (Bhakti-rasamtra-sindhu 1.2.234) Krishna says “sevonmukhe” just by using your tongue to eat Krishna Prasad and chant Hare Krishna or talk about lot of things will change the mind will be transformed, will be cleansed “cittto darpan marjanam”. So food is a big factor what other factor? What else? And everything around is of 3 modes of material nature. the place if residence could be in mode of ignorance, if the house is not clean its dirty its smelling, laundry just thrown all over, cockroaches around then the house will develop ignorance, cultivation of ignorance, house is dark not enough light, ok then another. The house could also be passionate house everything is dazzling, shining, cultivation of passion, house could be good also, even kind of pet you use, even these 3 modes of material nature they have their own colors. Ignorance is represented by black color, passion – red, goodness - white. So from the color also we could immediately say O! This black, but this doesn’t apply to Krishna. So house could be also, the place of residence could be ignorant, could influence you and make you ignorant, passionate or mode of goodness or your house could also cultivate pure mode of goodness, you have a good house at the country side, greenery around, flowers around, cool breeze flowing, no dogs making noise, there is no sign beware of dogs. Beware of dogs means house is ignorant and house is passionate bho…bho…..(Dogs sound).
If sahanai is being played that is good house, but as soon as you have temple in the house immediately that house is transcendental house. Off course you have to keep not only temple clean but your kitchen should be as clean as the temple, your temple room not this temple. Your house has a temple, altar keep that clean and kitchen is also clean, house is clean, the music is being played “Hare Krishna Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna Hare Hare, Hare Ram Hare Ram Ram Ram Hare Hare” (maharaj singing Prabhupada tune) you could get little machine now in few hundred rupees, Prabhupada,s tape, 24 hours, some devotees 24 hours their house is purified by chanting Hare Krishna by Prabhupada. So your house could be in 3 modes of material nature and in such a house you stay in ignorant house you stay and you cultivate mode of ignorance and Vaikuntha like house you stay in that will have influence on you, your mind, your intelligence, your ego will evaporate or dismantle, “dasosmi – I am servant, “dasanu das” ok then what else is influencing us? Books you read that’s a sound, the books means sound and we are influenced by sound more than anything else infact .
“sabdayonitvat” we are bound by sound and we would be liberated by the sound this is vedantasutra says, sabdayonitvat - all the bondage is caused by the sound and ultimately liberation from that, if the sound is binding factor then you want to become free from the bond that has been caused by the sound what could you do? Any suggestions? Exactly then use the sound. Sound is binding you, use another it has to be another kind of sound, another nature of that sound, then they will fight they will have big fight, 2 sounds will fight and which sound will predominate? Transcendental sound or Mahamantra or sounds of Bhagvat Gita , sound of Bhagvatam will crush other sounds, conquers over all other sounds. Yes so sounds are not only coming from the books or writing sounds also come from we hear sounds all the time people around us are talking.
So the talk is either going to cultivate ignorance in you or passion in you or goodness in you or transcendence you. “sanga tyagat” vaishnav is known by one who gives up the bad company. What is that saying? “sanga tyagat ei vaishnav achar” how would you know someone is vaishnav his acara, his activity is “sanga tyagat” all the time he is avoiding sanga here means asatsanga 2 kinds of sanga “astasanga tyagat ei vaishnav acara”. One who is always avoiding asatsanga that’s vaishnav acara. Otherwise see what happened when Dasaratha maharaj was getting ready to install Ram as the king, whole Rajya abhishek was planned and then manthra came running to Kaikae Ahe! ……………do you know? You lady wake up, O! What’s going on? O! What’s going on? Dasratha is going to make Ram the king, he is going to be enthroned aren’t you aware no…no…I didn’t know O! That’s good news O! Thank you, I am so happy to hear Ram would be installed as the king, O! Are there any sweets get some sweets, I want to feed this lady who came with such a good news. Someone comes with a good news we have to put sweet in his mouth so Kaikae was thinking good news thank you I did not aja ki taja khabar- that Ram was going to be king O! Very happy to hear this, well then unfortunately she heard more and more and more from Manthra she was very wicked nature, passionate, ignorant, jealous, envious and what not and she kept talking to her more and more and disturbed the mental makeup. The goodness was not there, she was covered over, Kaikae was covered over by this prajalpa, this is called prajalpa “atyaharah prayasas ca prajalpa niyamagrahah jana-sangas ca laulyam ca sadbhir bhaktir vinasyati” ( The Nectar of Instruction 2). The bhakti could become vinash, temporary at least you will be covered over and who knows how many days or months or years, life times that influenced could be there.
So from Ramayana we could understand otherwise Kaikae had so much affection for Sri Rama as if Ram was her own son. She was very happy to hear that good news but she was spoiled by this prajalpa by hearing this is asatsanga “astasanga tyagat ei vaishnav acara”. No I am sorry go away or if you don’t go away I go away, maintain safe distance from those who are addicted to politics, cheap talks, talks full of lower nature, lower nature may be good talk also. That’s lower nature, being even lower than that is passionate talk or ignorant talk and you are immediately influenced.
So those who come in are direction to influence us that ways you should be namaskar , bye , see you later, no…no..I will not even see you later (laughter) or when you get better then I will see you later. So sound could be good sound, passionate sound, ignorant sound all the schools and colleges of course and why blame only schools and college very where the market places or the parliament or the judges, lawyers are liars, lawyers are liars or even if they are talking of the law of the country if it is not based on, if your constitution is not based on Bhagvat Gita and Bhagvatam then you may be up holding the principles the laws described in the constitution of your country that could also be some passion, some ignorance, some goodness.
So the sound in written form or sound form is a big factor. So we need to know the study of 3 modes of material nature this is a very important study yes we should be able to understand, O! this is goodness, this is passion, what is coming on my way the food I eat, the place I stay or others are staying, this is of that nature , this is of that nature or people who are talking what we use that so many things could be influencing us, anything else that comes to your mind? Clothes which you wear could be also be cultivating ignorance in you the passionate clothes – actor, actress, dazzling, shining clothes. Simple white dhoti and sari doesn’t have to be banarasi every time it could be cotton sari, off course it has to be clean, not dirty, dirty means ignorance. You may have silk sari but it is dirty that’s ignorance, simple, clean clothing and before we began wearing new cloth we offer it to, devotees do it touch that to feet of Prabhupada, put that on the altar offer obeisance’s, thank for giving me this cloth my Lord and then you make that into Prasad and put on the clothes, transcendental your clothes are transcendental not excite passion when others look at you, your transcendental clothes, your transcendental body.
If you have nice tilak on, you are reminding everyone of Vishnu, you are surrendering unto Vishnu. The songs its part of the sound, sound could be of ignorant songs, passionate songs, all these films songs what – passion, because its full of kama , full of lust, if you want to cultivate lust in you get heart full of lust, mind full of lust just watch cinema, songs, television and you will be full of lust you will be lusty. So all the surrounding, all things around us are influencing us at every moment we are influenced and the influences are of 3 kinds goodness, passion and ingnorance. Then there explanation there could be combinations of like from 3 colors you mix this color with that color then another color, yellow, green and red just take 3 colors and mix with that you get another color and mix this more another one less you get another color. Mix 3 of them in different proportions and you get different color.
So not only there are 3 modes of material nature but you mix goodness with little passion little touch and it’s not goodness any more, mix with passion , mix little ignorance, so another variety. So how come each one of us is different, this is the reason, each one of us is different. Our propensities, our liking, our disliking its different, this is because of different combinations and permutations of these 3 modes of material nature. So “copasamena ca” that’s the key word also here “sama”. So of these 3 modes of material nature, the first proposal is that you cultivate goodness by pushing down ignorance and passion, you conquer, push them down and then predominating dominating mode is goodness.
There is also description in Bhagvat Gita how there is a big fighting, rivalry between these 3 modes, which is at the top. So person in ignorance means he has defeated passion and ignorance – he has some goodness in him, occasionally he is good and lot of times he is passionate but most of the time he is in ignorance. So like that there is a big rivalry, there are fighting. So person predominately in goodness or passion this is how he becomes known as passionate person. So first goodness dominates passion and ignorance and then ultimately bring the pure mode of goodness and “copasamena ca” push down “sama, dama, tapa, saucham” it’s at the level of the mind, you are very reactive and you are trying to push even goodness down and who would be at the top? Goodness has already pushed passion and ignorance down kept under control. Then you ultimately also push this goodness down then pure mode of goodness or transcendence or sudha satva and then you are Krishna consciousness.
Then we have International Society for Krishna Consciousness full of devotees, personalities who are fully Krishna consciousness, they are not ignorant and not passionate they are not even in goodness, my goodness, they are not even in goodness they are in pure mode of goodness, they are transcendental, “copasamena ca etat sarvam gurau bhaktya”.
So all could be achieved by “guru bhakti” by coming to guru, surrendering unto him and getting all the training how to achieve this he will teach you, spiritual technology how to control these different modes, push them down, subdue these lower natures and come out as transcendental devotees. There is a whole program and doing that lots of years to be understood science has to be understood sitting down and studying sastras and understanding what are the factors binding me and then there is 24 hours program practical program starting with getting up early morning which Lord Krishna also did at Dwaraka Krishna used to wake up as cocks did their job, cocks what would be they do? Cocos….cooo (sound of cock) and then Krishna would get up, jump. Cocks used to be outside now we have clocks and as soon as clock making noise, shut up (laughter) snooze little this ,Little that..hye! Shut up. But cocks used to be outside so no scope for (laughter) they used to do again and again till you are out up this is arrangement of the nature, Lords nature, cocks are controlled by the Lords nature, we don’t have a factory to produce a clock, cock is already there why you need clock just feed few grains to the cock, but you need cock to eat, you are bothering me all the time Cocos….cooo (sound of cock) ok come here (laughter) I will just eat you so that I could peacefully sleep during the morning hours.
This is the uncivilized society, humanity these days, Gods natural arrangements are being ignored, being forgotten, being exploited and they are creating their own mundane civilization. So instructions are there for the civilized society, getting up early morning, you sleep on and on and on which mode would be cultivated by sleeping? So there are some rules, because you are not sitting properly and soon you will be sleeping if you don’t sit properly so when you are sitting that is goodness, when you are standing that is passion and when you are sleeping that is ignorance. One could chant sleeping, could chant walking, chant sitting of the 3 sit down and chant that’s the best situation because every activity that you perform lying down activity will arouse ignorance in you stand up or even while you are sitting down and chanting and then some thoughts come of this and that and then what do those thought do two us? They get you up suddenly devotees begins stands up and he is pacing back and forth because its passion or that maybe also standing up may be necessary , ignorance is coming your way, passion is better than ignorance.
So instead of sleeping state, sitting and sleeping it’s better to stand up but later on you should be sitting down and chanting that’s the best. You understand this difference even in what position is our body, horizontal, sitting or vertical immediately different mode develops and we are influenced by that, it’s a science taught by sastras, sadhus, guru mentioned here in this verse. So you can conquer “anjasa jayet” jayat means you become jaya, last word is jayet- jaya you become conqueror of goodness, conquer of passion, conquer of ignorance, you conquer by taking shelter of spiritual master, by taking shelter of someone on the behalf of spiritual master, siksha guru, some senior devotee, instructing spiritual master.
All those instructions are received through this International Society for Krishna Consciousness, so that society becomes civilized society, country will become civilized and otherwise you want to talk more , you could go on talking immediately governments are doing how they are promoting passion and ignorance maybe little goodness but mostly passion and ignorance, they are cultivating to the extent that “kalau sudra sambhava” the citizens are becoming sudras, why do we call them sudras? Why are they sudra? What is the specialty, characteristic of sudra? He is in ignorance that’s why called sudra.
These 4 varnas “catur-varnyam maya srstam” (BG 4.13) Brahmana, Ksatriya, Vaisyas, Sudra these different varnas “vibhagasah” I made the division Krishna says this is according to the 3 modes of material nature again. Why someone Brahman, someone else sudra, why and present day civilization is sudra “kalau satva haram pumsam” Bhagvatama says kalau satva haram pumsam” all the people will be deprived of mode of goodness snatched away their goodness by kaliyuga, all these influence the factors, the advertisement, cinemas, the food, the association and the passion all of this is only cultivating ignorance in people, little bit of passion and almost zero goodness forget of transcendence. Everybody is becoming sudra.
All these big factories is sudra business or hospitals so many things. Prabhupada wanted yes go back to forest grow grains, sugarcane, vegetables you need and have bullock cart this was instructions to whole nation forget this industries you don’t have to import you have land, you have water, you have sunshine, grow some grains, cultivate goodness, get rid of this ignorance and passion and them add Krishna and transcendent. So we are here to understand all this from the founder Acharaya Srila Prabhupada, through his books, through his disciples and through his followers we understand, how society could be made civilized and if you wish to make society civilized we should be the first one to be civilized yes ourselves, if you want to change the world the first party that you should be changing should be who? Question 1: money is influencing people how?
Answer: we just said Kaliyuga is stealing, snatching all Goodness, so when Kali was given four places to reside where there is meat eating, where there is illicit sex, where there is intoxication, where there is gambling, kali was thanking Parikshit give one more place ok have one more and that was money- money of this age of Kali. Kali is residing in that money – paisa where we make Laxmi into money, Laxmi into paisa, Laxmi into rupees then we are ready to exploit that money. So as soon as money is used in service of the Lord or become Krishna Conscious ok trip to India go to Vrindavan, proper utility, instead you go to Tajmahal its useless, use of money.
So what do you do with the money is important, money itself is not good or bad. The best use of Laxmi- money is in service of Narayana. So house that you have transform that into Vaikuntha, temple, altar that costs some money. Shopping you are doing buy vegetables, grains, make a nice offering and offer them to your family deity at home that’s the use, you are not bound by that money, you are liberating the money you are liberating yourself also.
Buy grapes juice, you but wine you drink that you feel dizzy, you can’t even think straight, this is going to cause destruction, use the power of discrimination save money. One is buying grapes juice, one is buying wine, one is goodness product other is ignorant product. So these superbazars are full with something that is good, something that is passionate, something ignorant. So money has that buying power so the recommendation is that sudra if we are could admit this, sudras should never be given money the basic requirement-clothes, food that is offered to the Lord, shelter like that, don’t hand money to them they do not know how to use money, they don’t respect money, they do not understand money is Laxmi its Krishna’s, Narayan,s Laxmi.
So in ancient days sudra they were provided their basic requirements food, clothes and shelter they were never given cash in hand. But now cash is at their finger tip 24 hours- no training, no discrimination they are doing anything and everything with the money they have. So dharma, artha ,kama,moksha- 4 purusartha, so before you acquire money handle money you should be knowledgeable of principle of dharma. If without dharma you are given artha then you will use it for kama forget the moksha. If you are trained enough with dharma, “dharma, artha , kama, moksha” these are the four purusarth. Now there is no dharma, so there is no moksha forget dharma, moksha there are only 2 purusartha- artha and kama.
“diva ca arthe haya rajan kutuba bharne nava” Sukhdev Goswami has said this as soon he started his pravajan this is the first thing he said in second canto of Bhagvatam, grahamedhis, conditioned householders. Ignorant families “diva” as soon as there is sunrise “ca arthe” where is money? Where is money? Where is money? To feed families, clothes, this that for the family there is no Krishna in the picture, there is no dharma in the picture. So money has big role to play – buy sound, buy books anything and everything.
