Students as future leaders

As students you can use all your gifts for the ultimate welfare of the human society and in the service of God. Always remain in the mood of a humble person. Always recognize that whatever knowledge or abilities you have, they are by the grace of God. We may work hard to develop them, but without God’s grace, we have nothing to develop. God gives everyone a potential, and it is our free will how we’re going to utilize that potential and for whom.

You should do your studies as…

Yoga of Work

Yoga means to reconnect our consciousness with God, and the yoga of work is to connect our work with God. How do we connect our work with God? By doing it in proper spiritual consciousness.  It is not that we have to change our job or give everything away; it means we have to learn how to live in divine consciousness.

That consciousness develops when we think of God, worship Him and become His devotees, when we associate with saintly people, when we make our home a temple and worship…

The Mind is like a Mirror

The mind is considered to be like a mirror. The soul is seen through this mirror of the mind. But if the mind is full of debris and dust—of lust, greed, anger, pride, envy and illusion—what do we see? We just see debris and dust. We cannot seeour self unless the mirror is clean. Therefore the purpose of all spiritual paths is to clean the mirror of mind so that we can perceive who we actually are, our relationship with God, our relationship with all living beings, and our relationship with…

As pure as water from the sky

When it rains, the water that comes from the sky is crystal clear. But when it comes on to ground it becomes full of mud.  My question is what is the nature of water? Is it clear or is it muddy? It’s clear, but when it is mixed with other things then it appears muddy. In truth it is always pure. We simply have to separate what is water and what is not. That is the process of filtration. When we filter water, all of the dirt is in the filter and the water is again in its clear state, pure…

How does the holy name purify us?

It is not that we are just chanting the holy names and therefore we are getting purified. We should understand how we are getting purified and why we are getting purified.

Because Krishna is non different from his name, Krishna’s name has sweet will. It is not just a sound vibration. It is God who has incarnated in sound vibration. Because the name is Krishna, we cannot control the names, for the name is the supreme controller of all controllers. But when we are chanting in such a way that… Continue

Prasadam — What is it and why we should not eat anything else.

If you know some Hare Krishna devotees I am sure you have heard them talk about prasadam. But you may not be completely clear what prasadam actually is.

The literal meaning of the Sanskrit word “prasadam” is mercy. So when we say “Krishna prasadam” we are referring to Krishna’s mercy.

To understand what prasadam is we need to clear up a common misconception. Generally we are under the impression that we are the owners of the things that we posses and these things are meant for…

Does God Exist? Radhanath Swami Takes the Challenge…

Question to Radhanath Swami: How do you know there is God?

Radhanath Swami: How do you know there is no God? Can anyone actually prove that there is no God? There are so many theories, but what really is the evidence? Was anyone there to actually eye-witness the Big Bang with a video camera? It is just a concept born in peoples’ minds which seems to make sense due to certain phenomenon that they are witnessing today. But the obvious question is, is it…

Radhanath Swami Speaking About Mind, Intelligence and Ego

Can you see a thought? Touch a thought?  Taste a thought?  None of the senses can witness a thought.  It can only be witnessed by the mind.  The thought is the expression of the mind.  What is the nature of mind? Mind is linked to the senses. The senses perceive an object and relay that information to the mind.  The mind response to that object by saying, ‘I like it or I do not like it.  I want it or I do not want it.’  The mind is accepting or rejecting.  The mind…

Radhanath Swami on Real Love

We often mistake temporary pleasures of this world to be love. This mistaking of temporary sensations of the world lies at the very core of human conditioning. These flickering sensations are like a mirage. A person who is in the desert is searching desperately for an oasis of water.  And in that desperation, due to longing and hopefulness, sometimes a mirage appears. It appears that that mirage can quench his/her thirst, but all he/she gets is a mouthful of hot…

Why Should We Pray?

Radhanath SwamiWhy should we pray if God already knows everything? If he already knows our thoughts, why should we say anything? Because, life is about reciprocation, love is about reciprocation. Yes, the Lord knows our heart and the Lord knows our mind, but it pleases the Lord when by our free will we express ourselves—with the proper intention, proper honesty and integrity. And the Lord will reciprocate! When we offer prayers with sincerity, we enter into the presence of Lord; our lives are… Continue

Dualities of the world

One must be tolerant in the face of dualities of this material world. Whether your rich or poor, literate or illiterate, live in shanties or high rises, or CEO or simple worker, you are to the shackles of old age, disease and death.. The body will get sick and die but the soul is beyond birth and death. We have to learn to love God and realize the eternal relationship between the soul and Him before death. To the degree , we understand this, we can face any of the these impediments and see them… Continue

In the world, but not of the world

As Jesus Christ said, “We are in this world but not of this world.” To be in this world, but not of this world means the spiritual conception of life. We are above; we are transcendental to all the miseries, which are inevitable in this world. Such a spiritual person alone can actually create peace on Earth. Because he or she can enliven and illuminate others to get out of this world by being transcendental to the repetition of birth and death. So, as spiritualists, as devotees of God, our…

Unfortunate condition of the world.

Human form of life is meant for real satisfaction, which comes through self-realization that comes from the purification of the heart. But people, today, consider that this is impractical, unrealistic. This is the most unfortunate condition, the cause of all problems. It is practical, to destroy the water, to destroy the air, to destroy the ground with pollution, nuclear waste—it’s very realistic, is it not? It is very realistic and practical to be so frustrated in material endeavors, to…

The Spiritual World

The path of devotion teaches us the simple principle that we are all individual, eternal principles who are eternally connected to the Supreme Absolute Truth or Krishna, and we are all meant to serve the Absolute Truth. And in doing so we serve each other, and we create harmony. Why? Because then we will have common purpose.

The spiritual world, the real world, is where everyone accepts that Krishna’s pleasure is their real goal in life. Ahaituki, Apratihata: everyone is selfless… Continue

Light in Darkness

This material world is a place of darkness. In darkness there isalways fear. Violence, hatred, envy, greed, lust and illusion—these arethe forces of darkness which control this world. This darkness ispropitiated through the two processes of cruel and hypocrisy.

In the name of religion, people are exploiting others for their personal motives. In the name of peace and love,

there is violence and hatred. This is called hypocrisy. Whenhypocrisy is…

Poverty of the Rich

Years ago, I met with Mother Teresa. A newspaper reporter was glorifying her for nicely serving the poor. She said, ‘You don’t know who the poor are. People in the western countries living in big mansions, expensive homes, driving in nice cars, eating all kinds of foods—they are poor. Because although they have so much wealth materially, their hearts are lonely, their hearts are starving. When I look in their eyes, I see poverty of the heart. These people dying in the streets of Calcutta with… Continue

Reason for suffering

Everyone tries to claim as their own what belongs to God. Therefore, there is so much miseryand suffering. Because trying to claim somebody else’s property as ourown is sinful. It creates bad karma. When people take something theyare not supposed to take, they become attached to it; they becomeaddicted to it and so passionate for it that they cannot live withoutit. They commit so many sins to keep it or to get it. And that is whythere is so much crime, illicit sex,…
