Hare Krishna all,

PAMHO,

AGtSP!,

I stopped eating onion and garlic from last 5 years and I dont feel any change. As per scriptures

there differnt version of stories for not eating onion and garlic. Anyway, I want to know why onion

and garlic is not offered to krishna? I have seen temples who offer bhog which has onion or garlic in it (ofcourse not ISKCON temples). Where it is mentioned that krishna doesnt accept onion and garlic. I have read many articles about not eating onion and garlic, but I am not convinced. I just want to know where did krishna mentioned that it should not be offered to him. Is it a culture of few temples or is there any vedic evidence? FYI I am still not eating onion and garlic. Honestly speaking I feel I am missing many palatble vegetarian dishes. I hope this doesnt hurt or disturb anyone. Thank you.

  • Even chillies n there are many other vegetables that is not helpful in devotional service. These food are only for people who want to enjoy the food but this mentality makes us identify with our body. The devotee of lord vishnu must not eat anything which will make him want more n more food even if has already fill his stomach.Normally when these vegetables are present in one food we lose control over our mind.A great example is chillies who make u run everywhere for water. It makes u lose balance n is contrary to the calm state of mind that krsna explains in Gita for which devotees must aspire for.

The aim of the life of a vaishnava is to achieve the love of radha-krsna and in this path he does what is necessary and what is advised by guru, sadhu and shastra. In gaudiya vaishnav line of disciplic succession we abstain from eating food that contains onion and garlic and few other tamsic items. The reason for not eating onion and garlic has been taken up numerous times in this forum and some of the links are pasted hereinafter.

Now on the issue of you not feeling any change even after abstaining from onion garlic since long and missing on many palatable vegetable dishes, we have to understand that change in consciousness is a gift from krsna and his devotees. When we serve krsna and his devotees without any material motivation and desire then the love of god is bestowed upon us. The process of abstaining from eating onion and garlic is merely one of the ways which facilitate the process of devotional service by keeping us in the mode of goodness. But once we have achieved the mode of goodness then we also have to see what we do in that mode. Are we chanting in the mood of service, are we maintaining strong relationship with vaishnavas, are we reading srila prabhupad's books daily and like. Once we put on our effort then maybe krsna will give attraction towards him and take our attraction from his material creations.

My personal request to you is please read Srila Prabhupad's book daily and chant some rounds daily in the association of vaishnavas in the morning. This is a very auspicious time to do start doing such things as the auspicious month of kartik has just commenced. Also please serve some senior vaishnanva and request them to pray for you.

I am sorry if I have written something offensive. Just trying to serve you in my limited capacity.

    Ys
